Hmm, If you want an attacking coach then Matthew Knights had the most attacking game plan when he had Essendon and now he's with Scott at Geelong. There's some closely connected recent success there which is important imo. I guess Sydney were sort of successful last year despite not winning the flag and getting belted in the GF, and Pyke was assistant at WC for their latest flag from memory so certainly not the worst, and is from WA, I just think there are perhaps better.
Was Knights that attacking as a coach? Or just not good defensively? His Points For tallies are pretty middle of the road, even in their most successful year (2009).

Knights is now as the Budgies.

Just signed a new deal they won’t sack him, they give him every opportunity to turn it around.
The so called new deal was signed nearly 18 months ago. It was until the end of 2024.

We've sacked our last two coaches with a year left. We're underperforming with the list we have. The similarities to Mark Harvey are staring right at us.

He's gone imo. Just a matter of time

It’s totally different situation to when they sacked Harvey… can’t see a coach as good as Ross being available .

They’ll give him time to turn things around, it’s only 6 weeks in.

Sacking the coach isn’t always the answer

I’d be amazed if he’s not coaching freo next year
I think they're going to ride out his contract, I doubt he gets sacked at all. The board seems to have full faith in him.

The Saints are still defensive beasts. Comfortably the best defense and a decent attack. Not sure Lyon has changed at all tbh.

Both have baggage but Pyke's team was better to watch (as is Sydney now).
Apparently ranked #1, and ahead of Collingwood on ball movement, however they formulate that.

He sees out the season but that's it
Whatever happens we need more mature heads at the club.
Pyke would be ideal, guarantee we would have a different mindset to
the physical side of the game.
He would at least fix the contested ground ball.
I think it’s even more significant that what happened at Adelaide would
improve his coaching. Make him a better person.
His resume under coaches is very sound as a player and in the box.
The club should have had a Head of coaching role with JLo from the start.
Instead we have these trade deals that set clubs back for years, and no clear
plan for success.
Winning GF’s at Freo is going to take the best minds available.

Can you be more specific about the "we're underperforming with the list we have"?

Is it our ceiling-high stocks of experienced forwards, with their history of performance? The likewise hugely experienced midfield veterans? The steadiness between seasons and the chemistry they've forged over the years of playing together?

the crows played a very attacking game style under him…

he’s also been credited for turning Sydney into a more attacking team last year. Him & JL could be the perfect mix
Keep this in mind....

Have you seen the crows forward line when the crows made finals in 2016-7 under Don Pyke?

Here..... Let's look at it.

HF: McGovern, Walker, Tom Lynch

FF: Betts, Jenkins, Cameron

We don't have a forward line at Freo even remotely as good as that.

McGovern was injured in the week of the 2017 grand final but still.

I would love a Josh Jenkins type at the dockers

I don't think JLo is going anywhere. I had us losing to Brisbane in Brisbane at the start of the year when expectations were high. Not sure why that would somehow be some kind of deathknell for JLo now.

I think many coaches would have seen the experience of RTB and be thinking, well if he couldn't do it, got caught in the WAmedia death trap of the second team in a one team town, and sacked unceremoniously, then what chance would I have. IMO Freo is now the well poisoned chalice for senior coaches (Freo favourite sons aside). You'd have to be pretty desperate for a gig to want to come over to Perth to senior coach Freo now.

We are playing the youngest and most inexperienced side this weekend. People talking about WC playing the kids haven't had a good look at our sides. IMO JLo will be judged on how we are going by end of next season when our kids have another 40-50 games under their belts. With our age/experience profile currently, I see us more like where Adelaide were last year (yes, we've taken a step back through loss of players and unavailability of Tabs/Fyfe) and I expect a jump next year like they are experiencing now.

yes whats happening to us atm isnt some abnormality, of lot of clubs have slumped following a better than expected year. essendon last year, melbourne 2019, dogs 2017...

expectations were raised following a super successful year last season which weve failed to meet but if you actually look at the list profile, we are still a couple years off from competing imo especially after losing a few experienced heads. its a long term project winning a flag, lets not chuck the last few years out after 6 poor games

While I agree with mostly everything here, I think end of next season would be a stretch. If this year continues as is then he'll have to the bye next year max to show something.

I would put him getting kicked this year at zero short of a bunch of repeat Lyon like 100 point drubbings and/or the other JL being pushed out in which case I think that's too good an opportunity to pass up

"other JL"?

Look at the 22 on the park this week. Who is playing as well or better as last year? Serong, Walters, maybe Darcy. Can't think of anyone else.

This isn't a bottom four list but it's a bottom four performance so far. I'm not accepting of these performances as a fan of the club.

We're still reasonably young so I'm reasonably confident we can turn it around... with a different coach.

While I agree with much of this there is one question that needs to be asked in response, why are we still playing the youngest and most inexperienced side 7 years into a full rebuild? JL aside our list management 'strategy' has been...interesting.

Because we absolutely botched it with the trades in the early rebuild and because the only remaining talent from pre-rebuild are Sonny and Fyfe (who never plays).

Also, half the squad was constantly injured from 2016-2020 stalling development.

Listen to Ross Lyon talk before the game, you come out of that segment fully invested and convinced that this bloke knows his shit. You come out of a JL segment and you listen to him bumbling over his words, you come out of it confused on wether he even knows what is needed in modern day football.

Ross wasn’t working for us, don’t get me wrong I’m not saying we shouldn’t have moved him on but god listening to both Ross and JL is night and day difference.

Ross is decisive. JL just comes across as uncertain in interviews.

At the end of the day, the most important job of the coach is to sell a message to the players that they BELIEVE in.
If that doesn’t happen, or the players stop believing in the coach, then the problems start to appear.
We don’t know if that’s happening to JL or not but this group of players shouldn’t be this poor.
