I am little surprised at the hesitation now on JL, though I take the point that appointed coaches were always highly regarded prior to getting a gig so I dont think that in itself is the indicator you want.

Do I understand correctly that JL was at 2 clubs seperate clubs that went to a GF, Collingwood and WC? Was he with us when we went to the big dance.

I rate being involved in multiple clubs that get to the big dance a lot higher than winning one flag tbh. There are a lot of factors that go into winning on the day, if Sheed misses that shot last year does JLs stocks suddenly go higher? Shouldnt really, what should be taken into account is that he was involved in both the forwardline at WC and defense at Collingwood for clubs that made a Granny. I think what's he's done with Collingwoods defense has been exceptional given what they've had down there for most of the year.

One thing that does annoy me with this whole process is that for whatever reason, we've only really been linked with ex-freo employees. This indicates one or all of the following
a) Media have no ******* idea and just link us with ex-people for the sake of it
b) Only ex-freo players want to come to us
c) Only ex-freo players were realistically wanted.

The fact we dont seem to have even been in the running for Burns who would have to be rated AT LEAST as highly as JL is irritating. We need the club get to the point where people in the industry actively want to join us
Do you think this could be linked to the way Harvey was knifed and the sudden sacking of Ross with a year to go?

Your assuming we have all the information. The contact could have been made with Burns and he's not interested for whatever reason, that's not the club's fault per say. Candidates have their wish lists as well.

I am little surprised at the hesitation now on JL,

I'm putting this down to a kind of buyers remorse. All of a sudden you get what you want or almost have it, then you look start looking around thinking about the cost, maybe you could have got someone a little better, etc.

Maybe we could do a mystery coach a bit like masked singer.

Each game during the season we get given clues as to who they are, and have to guess who they are - throwing out names like Longmuir, Caracella, Clarko, Hirdy - only to find out that we've had a B-grade wannabe from BF the whole time.

100% agree with this and it is my only main concern.

Why didn't freo get a revered external football person (or two) from other states/clubs to sit on the selection panel - much like Jason Dunstall and Pav recently on the Crows External Review and then basketball coach Phil Smyth is now on the Crows coach selection panel. St Kilda also included AFL Head of Coaching David Rath on their coaching selection sub committee panel, recently appointing Ratten (footnote: Rath has now been poached by St Kilda into a club role).

Not that I have anything against the "freo way", it might be worth a try to simply pick our best candidate, but it would be nice to get some external thoughts and opinions.

To be honest, I do have a problem with the Freo way. We've not won a flag, the "Freo way" sucks by all measure.

Limiting yourself to pool of ex-employee's is beyond stupid, especially when from your history you've not been a well performed club.

Now, I think JL was at least top 3 in choices available anyway and so I am happy to bring him in, fully acknowledging I have NFI since I havent been involved in the process but I am disappointed it seems we havent really looked outisde the Freo bubble for advice, opinions and to a lesser extent - candidates (we clearly sounded out Voss and perhaps others at least)
