Yup, I agree.

Whoever gets Watts will be getting a bargain. Get him into a good club (Whoa, Fremantle are a good club!) with a coach that doesn't pick the team by name (like our very own Ross the boss!) and hardworking teammates that he wouldn't want to let down (holy crap! 3 strikes!).

He could be very handy.

I would be very happy with Watts*

* - as long as the Ross believes he will pull his finger out!

He has the body for it, does he have the strong clean hands and ability to play as a forward though.
From what i have seen he is a ball chaser, does not look a natural forward to me.
Fyfe would do a far better job than Mora.

Of all the available players coming out of contract.
Watts would be the best option and cheapest deal.
Franklin no chance, Taylor no chance and do not rate him as a key forward, he is like Mcpharlin great when it suprises opposition and they have no idea who to put on him, when they are ready for it he is easily stopped by defenders.
Taylor in last game suprised opposition and had no opponent, so closest had to leave his man to try and defend him, have a set opponent for him and he will struggle.
Watts has the tools its whether he has the mindset that is the problem.

Yeah, imo, Mora does. He's shown a great pair of hands in his limited AFL opportunities. He also played most of his junior footy as a KPP. This notion that he is pigeon-holed as a mid is just ... ummm...crap.

Jaqui Watts? Are you kidding me? But yes, this has also been argued many times on here before.

Also: do you really think that opposition coaches don't plan for Harry Taylor to swing forward?? It's been happening for years!

Either trade for a top 5k and try to get Boyd (better than Patton) or hope we get someone like Mitch Harvey (SA, 196cm, 104kg) or Cam Conlon in the first/second round.

Free agent target: Harry T, Franklin.

Offer big bucks to someone like A Black to return here.

I saw that we sent our recruiters to the US Combine. Looks like we are searching high and wide for a KPP. Should also have a look at NZ. Over 35k kids playing footy there in probably the strongest comp outside Australia. Lots of athletic freaks there also. Some reckon that Agape Patolo (197cm ruckman/athletic freak/former rugby player, could probably play forward) may be a first round pick. The Hawks Kurt Heatherley is rated possible first round (injured).

I was about to post a similar thread. I like the Idea of chasing Gumby and Black. If we can package a deal with a Pears type even better. I think we need to seriously look at trading our first round draft pick. I think we have done enough to redeem ourselves from a drafting/development point of view to no longer consider it sacred. Any depth we need to build can be done with later draft pics which will bring in the Lachie Neales and Lee Spurrs of the world. Bringing in some KPP in their mid twenties needs to be at the top of our priority list or the peek of our mids will be out of sync with our KPP's.

Harry Taylor is NOT a free agent though, unfortunately :(

We had our chance last off season to chase guys like Gumbleton, Hansen, Brown and didn't, I just don't think we are interested in trading. What we are doing with the freeing up of cap space suggests a free agent target so Franklin seems the most likely one we will have a go at, hope it is not Petrie.

We certainly chased Gumbleton. That is well publicised.

Why would you want a downhill skiier like Hansen?

Who's Brown?

We went tall, late in our drafting.

There's a reason for that. We don't compromise our senior list, and get to have a very good look at potential upgrades.

Roll the dice on these kids today, upgrade them if they show something, and go hard at a particular, (at this stage unknown publicly) target in the future.

I don't consider getting him over for a medical and putting out a few self serving press releases as chasing. Offering him a contract and entering negotiations with ASADAdon is chasing

I didn't say I did, I was making the point that we are not going to trade for marginal talent like some of those mentioned in this thread when we didn't go for Hansen, who is their equivalent

What??

Why did we get him here for a medical in the first place? For shits and giggles?

You only offer a contract for those who fit your plan. Gumbleton obviously did not. He was a massive, massive gamble health wise.

What would be the reaction if we signed him and he broke down in the off-season?

This whole Gumbleton thing does my head in.

Fair enough.

We were keen on Gumbleton.
Gumbleton was not keen to leave Essendon, he felt he owed it to them to stay after they stuck behind him for so long.
We may have also walked away due to injury worries but the story is that he was never really interested in leaving.

Taylor pushed forward last week when he was playing as a loose man in defence, easy to look good up forward when you dont have set opponents and opposition are slow to react.
When a team properly plans for him playing as a forward he will struggle.
Same goes for Mcpharlin, he looks great up forward when he catches opposition by suprise.
Then when they make adjustments and put a proper defender on him or plan for it pre game with a proper defender, he struggles.

That's a very good post

Oh FFS.

Taylor has been a swingman for years.

Stop making shit up.

Typical PB

Watch the game
Prior to his marks up forward, he was the loose man down back.
He pushed into the forward line unmarked.
Opposition were slow to react, didnt have time to switch things up and put a good defender on him.

Theres a reason defenders used as swingmen rarely work when given the actual role of being a permanent forward.
I will leave it up to you to figure out why.

And typical Sman-21

I wasn't talking about just one game.

I was talking about years.

Tell your theory to Adam Hunter and the like.

I reckon Carltank will have a crack at Watts.

So we will have this absurd amount of money to throw at a KPP but the likelihood of no takers....Next target then, totally bomb our midfield then?

A couple of freebies like Jared Brennan and Drew Petrie would be handy if we can't land someone in a trade. The window is open, so short term or not they should pull the trigger.

That's like digging through the trash bin for a half eaten hotdog.

Brennan has been hopeless for two teams because he gives minimal effort and is happy to collect a paycheck. Petrie I do rate, but we need more than a 12 month solution.

But will he be a bargain is the big question?

Ok so there's most of a season left so the situation will probably be very different come trade time but whatever happens I could see him still going for a late first rounder + player? I don't expect Freo to pay it but there's every chance someone will (and turn him around and there's a chance it'll be a good deal) and Melbourne wont let him walk away for too cheap because if he pops up next season as a quality player its just yet more bad press for them.

Watts is a massive hell no for me.... and I'll be absolutely stoked if he joins Freo, cause it'll mean Lyon has met with him and believes Watts could buy into the Freo model and consistently give a big effort.

Like I said most of a season to go but if he does decide to move on it'll be interesting to see what Melbourne can get for him.
