Well, Alex Carey was very popular around here pre-draft, so hopefully he gets a look in.

Personally, I'd like us to look at some athletic tall defenders. I know that Gugliotta was someone I was excited about last year and it didn't eventuate, but I genuinely feel that's the sort of player we should again be giving consideration to. Kyle Hartigan, Luke Thompson, Tom Mackenzie... these types although Hartigan is the only one of those who's really KP height. Dylan Grimes is another, although even at 193cm he's a tall flanker and unlikely to furnish into a KP player.

Has anyone seen enough of Sean Tighe to comment on his rookie-worthiness? He was certainly performing well for the Jets this season, stands 197cm and has, by all reports, excellent skills for a big man and is athletic.

As a versatile KP option he sounds very promising but I haven't seen him play.

Yep - athletic key position players with a skew to the forwardline (ie Panos).

I think we also need another super tricky small crumbing forward. After Brad Dick, we don't actually have another good young player here since Bennell walked.

I do think we are covered in the midfield now, but if we take a Carey type midfielder or even Clay Beams I won't be too displeased.

But as far as young inside mids go, we now have Pendles, Dayne Beams, Sidebottom, McCarthy, J Thomas, Sinclair, Blair, and even D Thomas, Wellingham, Barham and Rounds who could be role players / taggers in the middle. THis is to go with the older batch of Ball, Swan, O'Bree, etc.

Would prefer we focussed on key tall forwards and backs, and little forwards.

There's some kids with a lot of raw talent left available, like Majak Daw, Josh Donaldson and Derrick Wanganeen, so I'd like to see us take a punt on one of those types, but other than that, with the rookie draft, Hine really just has to take who he rates out of who is left.

It's too hard to predict who will pick which players, because obviously these players have ended up here because some clubs rate them lower than the other guys they drafted, and other clubs might not rate them at all.

I'd love us to give Panos and Hartigan a look at. Weston given our pre draft interest might be an idea. Did Sumner get picked in the draft?? Honestly our biggest list deficiency now is KPP and maybe a little something up forward.

I was surprised we didnt get at least one plus 193cm player to bolster our Tall forward stocks. Hopefully we can add one at the rookie draft.

The last three Magpies drafts have been very midfield-oriented.

2007: McCarthy, (Thoolen), Barham F/S
Rookie - (Casey-Leigh), MacAffer, Dyas

2008: Sidebottom, Beams, (Blight), Rounds -
Rookie - Francis, Blair, Bennell, (Thoolen redrafted), Keeffe

2009: Ball, Sinclair, Thomas, Buckley

*apologies if this is slightly out, it's OTTOMH.

Granted we took a punt on Luke Casey-Leigh in the rookie draft of 2007, too... but he always looked more like a tall flanker. Thoolen was an I-don't-know-what kind of selection. He played ruck/KP at Bendigo but was never likely to play ruck in the AFL without a significant growth spurt, and he was way too immobile to play KP in the AFL. Blight is more midfielder than KP player by a longshot.

So essentially, we've almost totally ignored our spine since 2006. That's not necessarily a huge problem, as the midfield needed addressing and we apparently didn't rate the talls available to us at our picks... and we had loaded up on talls in 2006 (Reid/Brown/Dawes) but I think we need to start looking at it now.

We also used our 1st pick twice on ruckman

Wood in 2007 and now Jolly in 2009!!

List is balanced beautifully....so long as two of Dawes/Reid/N.Brown do flourish into AFL players.
