Had a lighting problem (the light had basically stopped working) with the Paperwhite the last day or so, so came in to the local Dick Smith with invoice/receipt in hand and was really impressed by the service. I was able to get a new Kindle.

Have had a normal Kindle for 2 years. Loved it, decided to upgrade to Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Loving it so far. Easy to use, great for reading. Also one of the cheapest tablets on the market. Highly recommend.

How much extra does it cost us.......

Hmmm, let me compare my last few kindle purchases from amazon.com with the local product:

Gillian Flynn - Gone Girl. Amazon Australia $11.99, Amazon.com US$11.23
John Green - The Fault in our Stars. Amazon Australia $12.99, Amazon.com US$12.17
John Scalzi - Redshirts. Amazon Australia $11.99, Amazon.com US$11.23
Nathan Yocum - Automatic Woman. Amazon Australia $5.21, Amazon.com US$2.99
Anna Gravalda - Hunting and Gathering. Amazon Australia $10.64, Amazon.com US$9.99
Craig Silvey - Jasper Jones. Amazon Australia $9.10, Amazon.com US$8.54
Kerry Greenwood - Cocaine Blues. Amazon Australia $4.34, Amazon.com US$4.11
PD James - Death Comes To Pemberly. Amazon Australia $9.54, Amazon.com US$8.85

Except for the highlighted one, they're pretty much the same price with an exchange rate of ~$0.94 which is where it is today. The Silvey and Greenwood are Australian books so there's no discount for local either.

The Automatic Woman is a self published thingy so it may not be Amazon that's dictating the difference in price.

So it looks like they haven't gone all iTunes on us but we'll have to keep an eye out.:)

There was an article that if you use an American proxy, the US prices come out a lot cheaper. Amazon US detects your location and adjusts prices accordingly.

Of course not - it challenges their capacity to survive, notwithstanding the failure of the previous government to remove the protective barriers on the importation of books into Australia.

As a consumer and a Kindle user, I'm happy that Amazon has opened an Australian shop-front.

Same here. Although I found out if you get a gift card DON'T register your kindle with the Australian version. Although it's nice having the Australian version, I still keep it with the US one. Just bought a mere 13 books after Christmas and have almost finished 2 already.
