It is apparrant that Reid needs a partner in the forward like eg a tippet loke player. Any players lurking around our pick that could fill this role?

Mason Shaw and Kristian Jaksch are the only high level marking forwards but most likely both will be out of range.

Sydney will probably need to wait another year to add an additional high level key forward with that type of marking power unless you draft into the top 10 selection through trade week. But that is never cheap.

Aaron Luccon might be the next option I'd look at as a strong marking key forward, but he is more of a 2nd rounder.

Clayton prioritises skill and athleticism above grunt and attitude. He is also in the 'best available' camp very firmly.

I think a recruiting agenda is often set by the head coach, not the recruiter himself.

True, but it varies from coach to coach. Some will sit back and give the recruiters a fair degree of freedom with their selections (will be mostly the clubs with experienced recruiters - Buckley and Scott would be pretty content that whatever Wells and Hine do is going to be good for the footy club) and others will override the recruiters on draft day ie. Clarkson saying give me Stuart Dew as pick 45 came up in 2007, not a bad move for a gut feel!

I would have thought the Suns would be screaming for an inside mid before all else. I am of the belief that they have some good young KPD's coming through in May, Thompson and Schade, but the severe lack of inside mids has been very much highlighted when Swallow and Prestia have gone down through injury. It's no surprise that we've put up some of our worst performances of the year thus far without those two in the grunt. I guess we can add O'Meara to the list of players able to go inside next year though.

That said, it's hard to go past Whitfield.

I reckon we should go best available with our first pick and maybe just try to pick up an inside mid who is mature age either through trading or using a later pick, instead of burning the best kid to get an inside mid that won't be at his best for a few years and may not even develop as well as expected.

I think we will take a couple of tall's with our early picks this year. Its a pressing need for us now IMO.

I'll take Hogan in the mini draft with our first round pick, Jaeksch or Paparone with our compo (take Shaw but he'll be gone......maybe) and best KPD with our second round pick.

Problem with talls is that they do take time, it's a 4-5 year return on investment.

Yeah but they are worth their weight in gold in finals. Probably triple their weight in gold and because they do take time to develop you need to draft them first so the mids and kpp mature at the same time.

Bet the Gold Coast put pressure on the AFL (under their secret priority pick formula) for a priority pick before the first round if they only win 2 or 3 games (or less). This would throw a spanner in the works. I think under the old system they probably would have been eligible or close anyway. They could end up with Whitfield, Grundy and throw in O'Meara - and other clubs in tears!!!!.
Do not think the AFL will do it this year as it will hurt GWS - unless at end of first round priority. If GC perform badly again next year they will get a pre first round pick for sure.

Yer huge possibility. They really have shot themselves in the foot though by recruiting so many young kids. If they had traded for some decent mature bodies like was intended then this wouldn't have happened. Not to mention a full team of 'second year blues' is always going to struggle.

What do you think about Ben Reid? Greatest defender in the history of the game? The reason I ask is because you compared three players to him - Plowman, Jaksch and Stewart. And all three of those players are very different. So Reid must be an absolute star. :p

Clearly Reid is a star ;)

Will get more imaginitive as I go. It's fair to say player comparisons haven't been a focus of mine up to this point.

Hey Knightmare, do you think Shaw would be AFL ready next year and be able to slot into a team ala Jack Darling, or would he need develop his body a bit more?
Im not knightmare but I saw shaw first two games of nat carnival he is a long way of being ready for afl ,if he gets the opportunity I am thinking three years of development imo

Any specific reason?
It took tom hawkins five years and he was the same height but 10 kilos heavier he was also player of the nat champs, To be quite honest mason is a fair way behind tom at same age. I am not sure whether Mason is the best kpf in WA at moment

Shaw is probably further developed than most key forwards at this stage but I still wouldn't bet on him as an immediate option. Will need time before he can contribute at AFL level as with all the other KPPs this year.
