Cheers for the link, that was great.

Hope that kid is on the money with his 10 goal prediction! :D

And Kurt absolutely schooled that bloke at the end. Legend. :thumbsu:

that guy calling up, questioning Walker's work rate and contested marking ability, was annoying. Walker had 2 contested marks that game, which was the same as Tippett/Hendo. i didn't realise Rutten and Porpz were players that were known to even take contested marks.

the rest of the interview was great. thanks for the link.

Cornsey is painful to listen to!

I got the impression he hates basketball with a passion.

He was wrong to argue against the point being made, because it's pretty blindingly obvious that most basketball converts do seem to have increased anticipation levels.

Very good interview, sounds like a top bloke.

And that muppet saying Walker can't take a contested grab has absolutely no idea.

You could tell in Tippet's voice that he was thinking that guy was a moron with no clue what he was talking about, but had to be diplomatic.

Yeah just having a listen now.... a-grade moron that bloke saying Walker doesn't take contested marks. I've seen him take plenty of good contested marks this year and he'll only get better. His defensive pressure is also improving as each week goes by.

To be fair to the moron he hasn't taken a real heavy grab this year yet and he has had the opportunity, he has taken some nice one v one marks, but I do understand slightly where he is coming from. I actually prefer Tippet to be the contested option and Walker to be the 1v1 or leading option. He isn't quick but leads intelligently and finds space.

One on one Walker is as good as anyone in a contested situation because he is a smart footballer.

What you won't see is him take any hangers or split a pack open. Again this is probably because he is a smart footballer, the percentages are so low to take these kind of marks, he's probably better at crumbing the pack.

I'd have to say that walkers job is not to crash packs, that's what Tippett does more often than not. Walker is a one-out and lead up type player. A genuine pack smash mark doesn't actually happen all that often anyway

Give Walker some more games and preseasons and he will grow in confidence and strength and will crash packs. I still think every player needs to get 50 games in them before we can really see what they are or aren't capable of. Too many Crows fans expect too much from our youngsters these days. As long as they are improving and play within the team structure and adhering to team rules (like chasing and defensive pressure) then the candy will come later. Even Roo improved over his first couple of seasons.

Thanks for posting the link as I don't get AM reception. The more I hear Kurt speak the more impressed I am.

Gees this guy annoyed the hell out of me. The only thing Walker hasnt done is take pack marks. But on the lead and one on one I'm very happy with his development. His aerial ball has come along way since last year (at AFL level).

I actually went to one of the main training sessions on Max Basheer oval last week. Since splitting the main session into two shorter sessions, they now break off for the last 15-20mins of training to work on 'specialist areas' or 'areas of weakness' or areas a player wants to hone.

Walker did some work on one on one contested marking. He was up against Phil Davis who is slightly taller and very good himself at one on ones at this stage of his short career. One of the trainers was kicking it to them (true marks up style). Neil Craig stood right next to the contest watching very closely giving advise/encouragement/feedback.

These are two of my favourite players. It must be said that Davis is slighty younger and a lighter frame, but Walker marked nearly every ball. He was just too strong and was able to quickly identify the drop zone of the ball and edge Davis out. Much more dominant than at AFL level but a sign of things to come. I think, like his goal kicking, during games he might tighten up under pressure and not produce his absolute best yet during games. But his kicking and marking at training is elite. It'll start to flow on more and more into games.

Davis was certainly trying. I must say I was torn. It was great to see Walker look so good, yet at the same time I didnt like seeing Davis get beaten so easily. It was mostly a strength issue. Davis is in trouble at moment if he's caught side by side with his opponent at this stage. He is very smart though and tries not to get into a battle of strength when defending a mark during games.

On a side note. I wouldnt be surprised is Walker was about 193cm now. I've been watching him lately. He looked very close in height to Davis 196cm and looked the same size as Mitch Brown for WCE 194cm. Then watching him next to Henderson (190cm) he looks a few centimetres taller than Ricky. Doesnt really matter much, but he's a good size now.

On a side note Aaron Duncan (NSW scholarship) and Chad Wingard (SA u18 player) were training with the crows. Both are 17yr olds but Wingard looked 5 times the player of Aaron Duncan. He looked extremely slow and average unfortunately. Their was one part where all the players lined up against a player of similar size and speed etc to do some sprints/agility drills. Wingard smashed Duncan. And Duncan was actually the slowest of the whole team (the last one to cross the line in the sprints) on several occasions. NC made him do some push ups each time.

Chad Wingard (under ager for SA) looks good. Huge vertical leap for little guy, good speed and nice skills. If GWS dont pick him up as an underager (I think he fits into one of the 12 they can take) I certainly wouldnt mind him next year. In the championships he played small forward/midfield. Rendell has obviously got him out there training with the crows.

Gees this guy annoyed the hell out of me.

I suppose you can't expect to get through a 5AA interview without a complete pillock given a medium to express his ideas and thoughts! :D

Thanks for the training report as well. Much appreciated. :thumbsu:

That's the good thing with Phil, even though he's very skinny at the moment, he can use his outstanding football intelligence to work around it. He's going to be an absolute star.

Chalk up another tick in the box for Rendell.

I suppose you can't expect to get through a 5AA interview without a complete pillock ...

Are you referring to Cornes or Rowe?

LOL :)

Really, they were both OK, and gave Kurt a good platform. On which he SHONE, I thought. :D Very Inpressive.

Thanks for the link, ILA. :thumbsu:

Lunacy, thanks for the training report. The image of Davis and Walker going head-to-head, when you want them BOTH to win the contest, but only one can, is a good reminder of how tough the game is, and why we shouldn't be down on players who don't win every contest.

Couple more points to add to this.

In pre-season training Tex was matched up against Goody at FF/FB in end to end drills. So effectively a one on one with Goody/Tex rotating the FB/FF roles as the ball was coming in out of the end to end drills. Tex gave Goody a bath IMO. Read the ball better as either the defender or forward and his bodywork was exceptional. His height compared to Goody probably put Goody at a bit of a disadvantage, but you add this to your comments above vs Philthy and his performance, at moments, in real games to date and you can't help but salivate for his future. (sidenote: Goody was absolutely working him over with some elbows and hard hits to the body as well.. they both seemed to love that and were at hit hammer and tongs at times, stuff that would get free kicked in most games these days).

Secondly - i've pointed out a few times over the last few years that Tex being a 'pack crasher' and use his body to physically impose could take some time because... he grew up as a kid playing against men. Men in broken hill who no doubt wanted to smash the little upstart who had a dad with a big mouth as well. So I would assume he used his smarts and ability to read the ball to hang off the back, crumb etc rather than try to smash into a pack and spill the ball free. Now his body has developed, he just need sthe confidence and mindshift to go with it before he may also be able to bring that to the table. As others have pointed out we won't need 'alot' of this from Tex given Tipsy is up there as well - but he needs to provide it when it is time to do so. I reckon he can and will improve this aspect of his game as well.

Thanks for the insight mate :thumbsu:

On Duncan, don't judge him too harshly on what he shows at the moment. Riley looked a cut below everyone else (besides Donnelly I suppose) when I saw him in preseason training, both in terms of football ability, and in terms of fitness, yet he is now producing good quality league football after only one preseason. Wingard has been in a strong development system, whereas Duncan has been playing country juniors where he's one of the best players every week.

Assuming he's a strong enough character to handle the demands of AFL life, he should be able to develop much more as a player than someone recruited from the SA system, and opefully close the gap between them in the process. By all reports the talent is there so hopefully the development will follow.
