Was pretty funny though.

He's a backman..... usually any mistake in the back line is costly, no matter who makes it.Thought he was ok, but when he makes a mistake, it's a costly one.
At AFL level he's a step off the pace. Like most young players in their first few games (most recent example Duryea).
Difference is, those other young players grow out of it in 10 or so games, and usually have other redeeming features (Duryea's kicking/aggression, Hill's endurance, etc). Cheney doesn't really have that.
AT VFL level, he's either quicker or stronger than his opponent, and is proficient enough to play to his strengths. At AFL level, his opponents are either as strong, but quicker, or as quick but stronger, and he's restricted into a negating role.
He doesn't offer enough offensively to make mistakes defensively, and he isn't a good enough stopper to play a pure negating role. He was easily WOG in the first quarter, interrupting 3-4 forward thrusts of ours through poor disposal, and being caught out of position defensively as well.
Good to have in the 25-30 grouping, but I think we will always be wondering when he will be replaced by a younger, tastier product.

you kidding? He had a stinker - conceded the first goal through a fumble under little pressure, gave away multiple stupid frees, bulldogs actually targeted inside 50 kicks at him knowing he wasn't winning the contest...and finally that kick. Time to play out the year in Box Hill before being delisted as he just isn't AFL standard let alone Hawthorn standard.Other than that missed goal. Thought he was pretty solid! Few fumbles here an there, still a good depth player! Solid defender
This is pretty much on the mark.
Today my two young boys couldn't understand why i was so amazed that an AFL player could miss a set shot from the top of the goal square. So I took them to the footy oval and tried to explain it to them by kicking at the goals from the same position. No matter how much we tried, it is almost impossible to hit the post from the top of the goal square.
That helped explain to my sons, just how shocking the Cheney kick was. They proceeded to tell me "the red guy, why is he playing in the AFL". Just shrugged the shoulders.

I think this is something posters in here should try and adhere to. Sometimes i can't believe the reaction (over reaction) of some in here to selections and performance. Cheney is well respected and every time he has gone back to box hill he has done that with a smile a determination to get back in the ones. Something i can't say for others that have befallen the same fate. So please he is one of the hardest workers at the club i think he has earnt your respect. Are you kidding?? No one has said he was a star. I and a few others said he was solid.
20 possies, 9 contested, 2 frees against, 1 for - so not really note worthy, Langford 4 against with 2 also against was Whitecross, Hale, Sewell, Lake.
5 x1 percenters, 5 marks and 75% efficiency. I know some dont like the efficiency stat but it certainly doesnt indicate he should be put back to BHH and await his delisting!
A little respect is probably in order. Regardless of how you rate him in the best 22 from all accounts he is very popular, hard working and does everything he can to get the best out of himself.

Your a dis
Your a disgraceful parent...
HahahahaAs bad as you're grammar
Hahahaha
They've given him enough chances for mine.
He turns 24 next month and has played just over 30 games. He is handy depth but does not look like he'll ever be an A or B level player.
With Boseley, Cheney, Litherland and Kelly on the list, a decision will need to be made about which ones we keep.
