Reports of looting in the evacuated areas so even if your house hasn't burned down there is a chance it could get robbed instead.

Even if the arsonists starting these fires have a diagnosed disorder I don't think that is any excuse and they should still be punished with jail time, if you let them get away without any punishment it gives the green light for other people to start fires.
Never for a second suggested otherwise. Another poster stated that they hadn’t heard of propensity to commit arson being a psychological disorder; I was simply stating that it was (albeit with a different name).

Can guarantee there would be a bunch of criminal cases in front of the courts right now that can be traced back to a psychological disorder of some kind… drug/alchohol/gambling addiction, kleptomania, psychopathy, just to name a few. Of course we shouldn’t just make any of those mental health conditions a free ticket to committing any crime you want. So far as I can tell no poster here is suggesting that.

For sure. 16 deaths so any arson that caused those deaths should be treated as manslaughter.

There's some crazy conspiracies doing the rounds:
  • started as a distraction before January 20
  • started as a targeted burn of Diddy's house to destroy evidence
  • California isn't allowing fire trucks from other states to assist unless they meet certain environmental markers; this was being doubled down on even though the fire houses coming to assist had shared info when they arrived in LA & the roles they'd play a good 12hrs before the lies were being spread. But people were paying more attention to the lies, believing & sharing that BS compared with the good news of what was actually happening

Then you've got the naive (some who seem very serious) asking why they aren't using that big blue thing beside California (the ocean) to put out the fires...

When it's been explained to them that the equipment isn't designed to work with salt water which would cause issues, they argue it'll at least be a start. Then others are trying to educate them on the dangers of "salting the earth", to which they reply "well, at least that's better than fire destroying everything"

Then there's a group asking why don't they have desalination plants located in those areas for use during these types of situations

They've also some who've now decided they want James Wood (who's house didn't burn down even though he stated it did) to run for Governor in 26, and Mel Gibson for mayor
Dumb question but where do they get the water from? Reservoirs?

I always thought it was from the ocean, but salting the earth is an obvious point that didn't even occur to me.

Politics. One side fighting the other along with a lot of buerecratic nonsense.

The reality is forced quotas and diversity are a terrible way to achieve positive outcomes.

Instead of gifting people jobs, these outcomes should be met by providing long term solutions to build that diversity. Want more women in engineering, men in teaching etc. Equal pay.....then build platforms to encourage growth In those industries but as we are finding out forced diversity is going to put the wrong people in these positions

When people question this, theyre labelled as sexist racist etc.

You think organisations are putting women who aren't qualified as engineers into engineering positions?

Reservoir water would come from rain catchments, not sure on dam situations in those regions or river diversions also

Cali does have desalination plants but not sure how they are connected to things work with the system they have there

You sure it's a lack of ability to see consequenses?
No - because I am not a psychologist. The point was that something like this is probably a bunch of mental health issues that result in someone being obsessed with starting fires.

And thus needing treatment.

Phos-chek is the red fire ******ant they've been using.
Not that friendly for the environment but an angle for $.
If you've got a lot to invest,Catastrophe Bonds could be the go.
In the face of disaster,US entrepreneurial spirit stands tall.

There is no mention of an inability to see consequenses of actions as part of the DSM criteria for pyromania. Maybe there are others that are obsessed with stealing cars, robbing, taking things etc.

Get em' all into treatment?

Not so dumb as many people have asked the same question over the last week.

Although one person asked the same question last week on twitter and copped an avalanche of abuse just for asking.

I don't think the LA or California fire departments own any saltwater capable fire fighting aircraft but Canada sent a couple of Super Scoopers down to help out. They can refill in the nearby ocean with a 10 minute turnaround whereas other planes need to go to an airport.

Adding nothing to the discussion here, however few weeks ago playing golf at Sun City, fires were going north of Yanchep. Helicopters coming in drawing water from the golf course lake between the 10th and 18th holes. Just had to move to the bush and off the fairway for the minute or so it took them to come in and get going. 8A309C72-F0D5-406B-A1EB-E29B829EB435.jpeg

not something you’ll find in the diarrhea factory publications. or much of the mainstream media for that matter

Catastrophic winds blowing 160 km/h in a dry winter and people want to talk about other things?

If you want to know what this was like, next time you've got a fire going, blow your portable air mattress inflator across it. And while you've got that going, try to spit the fire out.

They dry fuel and strong winds were just about unstoppable. Fire breaks, even natural ones like roads, were hopeless with that kind of sustained wind.
