In the US? Or here?

Both but Australians weren't as consumed about US politics back in the 80s and 90s as they are now.

We care more about US elections than our own these days, no one here cared about the Reagan vs Walter Mondale 1984 election.

We didn't have the internet back then, the only thing I knew about America back then as a kid was reading the MAD magazines.

The US has always had a "liberals vs conservatives" thing going on.

It has become more pronounced and vicious in the last decade pr more, but it's always been a bigger thing than here.

It's certainly become more divisive there and it wasn't like that when I was living there in the late 90s, everyone liked Clinton.

He was from Arkansas so he appealed to the old Southern Republicans as well as the more progressive Northern Democrats.

The most divisive guy then was Howard Stern and he wasn't taking about politics, he talked about strippers in his radio studio.

They were simpler times.

Driving through waterfall gully road in SA And its the same. Every house, including surrounding suburbs will burn.

I drove to Aldinga today and the amount of dry litter around is begging for disaster.

We humans are so dumb.

Not sure how long it takes here, but was staggered to read that it can take 7 years to get approvals for conduct controlled burns in the US.

A recent analysis by my colleagues at the Property and Environment Research Center underscores just how cumbersome NEPA-related delays can be for the projects most needed to reduce fire risks. On average, it takes 3.6 years to begin a mechanical thinning project and 4.7 years to implement a prescribed burn after the U.S. Forest Service initiates the environmental review process. For large projects requiring environmental impact statements, the timeline stretches even longer, averaging 5.3 years for mechanical treatments and 7.2 years for prescribed burns.
