Laidley vs Carey on Footy Classified

Sorry to self-indulgently quote me, but I just wanted to make the point that the coach exceeded my expectations.

For the first time since Fathers Day 05 I could actually hear about him getting a contract extension at the moment and not go postal. I've never heard him articulate his plans and thoughts so well, and I hope it continues.

If only North people could realise how hard Laidley has worked to improve his demeanour and media presentation for the benefit of the NMFC.
We have a coach who loves the club not a mercenary in there for the money.
Last night's performance on the new footy show has shown people the results of his hard work as well as proven his passion and future hopes and plans for the NMFC.

Progress is now being made and the club is slowly moving forward not backwards. Changes do not happen overnight.

Is that the response I get?

I'm sorry moomba I have misplaced the sheet where I jot down the issues that you sit on the fence on. It is late (here anyway) maybe tomorrow.

Ha! Look who's talking!!

If Wayne wants to say we gained a good draft pick for him screwing up, then that would be pick #4, which is Tim Walsh of the Bulldogs. Now Tim has played 1 game, taken 3 marks, had 2 kicks & 1 handball, and kicked 1 goal.

Don't underrate Tim Walsh. As far as I know he is the only player in the AFL with a 100% conversion rate in front of goal. And a marking machine. Who else has taken a mark for every possession in his career?

I don't want to be too hard on Wells, but Carlton may have done us a disservice when they got caught out.

After reading through these posts, what I found to be most bemusing is the sudden backing for Laidley. What an absolute joke.

Many on this forum have bagged Laidley in the past for his style of coaching, and wanted him replaced or sacked, are now backing Laidley and bagging Carey.

In the past, many, many of you have bagged me for wearing 'rose coloured glasses' and not telling it like it really is - Bigfooty style.

After the NAB Cup game against Carlton, North was 6-7 goals up and we lost. I think that was a disgraceful effort.

And this was supposedly after North had had 'an intensive and early training' to rectify the problem of the last few years, of fadeouts in the last half of the game and certainly the last quarter.

And what happened after this 'intensive training' that started last September, that is September 2006, North was overrun in the last quarter
- by a team that won the wooden spoon
- by a team that was more desperate than my team.

I don't care if we lose, it is the way we lose that is more disturbing.

And what happened in the first round, North was 5 goals up and LOST by 3 points.

It was not Shannon Grant's fault nor the fault of the umpire.

North became too conservative, too cautious and too hesitant and lost the game because Collingwood threw caution to the wind and played like they wanted to win. Sound familiar.

Which brings me to my next point.

After all the bagging Carey has received from this board and from this particular thread, at least he called it like should be. Play attacking footy, go long and go direct. And stop hesitating.

As for the demonising of Carey and the sudden elevation of St Laids, it is just laughable.

There is one point a couple of posters made and that is that at least Carey had united the club. (A bit like old times!!!!!!) And if we needed a focal point to galvanise the football club/department doesn't that suggest the leadership in the football department may be lacking.

As for 'Footy Classified', I thought the first 5 minutes of the show, all 4 seemed very nervous and it showed with the yelling, shouting and talking over each. ( I also noted not one backed Carey after he had a go at that women when she accused Carey of seeking headlines. Her own team bagged her recently for nor checking any facts and then writing what she thought were facts.)

As for the Carey and Laidley, (the name of the thread actually indicates the pulling power of Carey), I thought both put forward good points.

Carey was right and it actually seems to rile many on this board. If he had finished playing with North, Wellsy would be playing with Wichmond. And our absolute star/gun next champion player would be...........?????

BTW, why isn't Wellsy playing as he plays. His plays his best footy from instinct....like the Jackie Chan goal....or the run through the middle and goal....or the goal from the boundary line in the dying moments to defeat Cartlon. I am positve that there was criticism on this board for not playing 4 quaters in that game, but North got the points. (Get the point, in the end - a win is a win).

WHO CARES. At the end of the year, no one goes through the list and states we shouldn't be playing in the Grand Final because for x amount of games we didn't play 4 quaters.

Unlike many others, I strongly believe that Carey had a right to defend himself. Afterall, Carey made a comment about the club and Laidley retorted with an idiotic personal comment that served neither he, Carey or the club that they both represented. (And also would have hurt others involved, others he does care about).

And shock horror, I actually agree with Carey! I also want the club to exist for the next 100 years.

And that means playing good exciting footy which attracts crowds, sponsorship and membership. And that means $$$$$$$$$$$$

Michele.... the disturbing fact that Carey didn't even discuss anything with John Longmire is a poor start already... read the JL article #1 post in thread...you'de be quite dissappointed that the Horse just had to say what he did. Carey is definately fed up...we can all see & hear it, I'll give you that BUT the way he has gone about it was very amateurish and to have Ch9 needing to broadcast how foolish he was about it just kills his intentions. I've already dismissed the whole fiasco as a BLOWTORCH exercise gone wrong.

Carey embarrassed himself, the club, JYD and no apology offered either.

I don't believe he hasn't discussed the role with Longmire - they are good friends. I just think Duck took it into the open without Longmire knowing. It hasn't done Horses prospects any help.

Woodson,

Do you know for a fact that Carey has not spoken to Longmire. They are friends.

Carey is frustrated with the club's direction - or lack thereof and it shows. And I would hazard a guess that that is the reason for him speaking out. And no, the timing is not great and something Carey acknowledged. And posters have not acknowledged that Carey agreed.

I am not saying that Carey definitely spoke to him or he didn't, but as Longmire is currently employed with another club what else would anyone expect him to say - that he is looking to leave at the end of the year!

What would have been outrageous is if Longmire had not applied for - and seemly was the front runner - for a senior coaching position.

Wow. Great post, Pauline. :thumbsu:

I mean, Michele.

It's nice to see someone finally place such a heavy emphasis on logic.

Oh, just one thing. While you're busy teeing off on our poor last quarter, via the kind of fascinating insight shown in the following words......

North became too conservative, too cautious and too hesitant and lost the game because Collingwood threw caution to the wind and played like they wanted to win. Sound familiar.

Which brings me to my next point.

.....you are, of course, aware that Carey endorsed Dean's coaching in the last quarter of Saturday's game and commended him for not approaching it in a too defensive, or "conservative" if you will, manner ?? Or did you miss that bit ??

You've done it now. She will not respond for a month and never return to this thread. Such a shame.

Michelle, you know less about football than Caroline Wilson carry a bias which is more blatent and blind than any she carries and make even less sense.

How does that make you feel?

I can see where you're coming from with the Longmire reference but I was basing it on what John Longmire was telling the media...the poor timing by Carey is where this whole fiasco has blown up back in his face...he may well had a chat and even Longmire may have indicated (OFF THE RECORD) he is definately interested but Carey didn't have to come out and state it...if he had waited for season to kick in....say week 18 and North are out of the finals race, then SURE, Carey's comments would carry much impact.... I think we know where everything is at now...no surprises really... just a sloppy move by Carey and he merits the chastising from the parochial BF fan base. ;)

TOD, I hope you are aware of what you've just done... you now OWN Michelle.

Was Carey saying that just too ease his own embarrasment on JYD...as I still think JYD was quite HAPPY with the way the game was going....I wasn't at ALL comfortable ... TOO OFTEN has this happened and it's NOT AGGRESSIVE / ATTACKING ENOUGH.. putting the GUNS in thier righful positions to GO ALL OUT is not leaving Firrito in the opposition goal square & Harro sitting on the pine... :( Carey was soft for endorsing JYD's defensive set up.

I thought he had to say it, after admitting the only negative thing he can say about Dean's coaching - not having watched the team enough to say anything else - is that the team went too defensive too often last year.

He was very soft on him - if he really has issues with how Laidley coaches, he should have had something when asked the question straight up. Any of Dean's critics on here would have had plenty of ammunition. But then, they do have the advantage of having watched most games North has played post-Carey.

Great timing H2H.....JYD would be mercifily crucified this Easter :D ... hope he can rise on Easter Sunday with a much needed win. I have a few long nails left over otherwise.

Coming from you......I feel nothing.

Now I hope that gives you a warm inner glow.

The game against Carlton in the NSB cup was very defensive. North were up by 6 goals and LOST.

The same happened last week against Collingwood. North has a 5 goal lead and LOST.

I will go out on a limb here and say I think Carey knows just a little bit more about footy than all Bigfooty posters put together.

If a team is known to have fadeouts and the very reason why that team started pre-season training in Sept 06 was to overcome that issue. If that teams loses badly to 2 lowly ranked teams (in the current season), after being well ahead, surely a Premiership captain who played with that team and knows of their fighting ability, surely he is able to put forward an opinion.

I also think all the people on BigFooty have seen more of North than Duck has. He admitted he hadn't seen much of North later in the show.

Anyways, aren't you disturbed by the fact that you are putting an individual ahead of the club? You're usually one who gets stuck into other posters for knocking the club. But Wayne does it and all of a sudden it's OK? Not very North Melbourne-like.

I can quite honestly say after listening to Carlton get a run-on and not only get near North's score, but get ahead, I turned off the radio.

Similarly last week's effort. Listening to the game was pure torture. Apparently the 3rd quarter was disgraceful - by both sides - and yet in the final term, Collingwood came out, threw caution to the wind, and won.

It is not that we LOST that disappoints me, but the WAY in which we lost.

Odd that you should mention those who knock the club. I found it very hypocritical of those on this board who bagged Laidley mercilessly, then 'found' support for Laidley because Carey dared mention what those on this board had been writing about.

What is very un-North Melbourne like is to continually bag the coach and any one player that takes their fancy in a particular week.

As for Carey, he is not on the Footy Show, or Foxtel for his looks, or or on radio for his voice, he was chosen for his footy brain and football commentary.

I mean I don't know how much Carey had to do with Hay, but I found it interesting that both he and Lyon stated that what you saw on the TV was pretty much Jon Hay.

BTW I could never understand why many commentators rated Whitnall as having the best footy brain above Carey and most other players.
Now many are calling for Whitnall - the so-called 'brilliant footy brain' to be dropped as captain.

Hypothetical Michelle - say one of the posters on here wrote exactly what Carey said? Or Walls said it. Would love to know what your opinion would be then.

And by the way, you can leave me out of the Laidley bagging camp - as anyone on here would attest.

Carey has more than a great footy brain - he has the supernatural gift of knowing what North should be doing and what Dean is doing wrong, without even having to watch the team play.

You might need to start watching or going to games instead of listening in. Last year - and the year before, even though more results went our way - the team played defensively and were boring to watch. This year, win or lose, they are playing with flair and growing confidence. There's plenty to be pleased with if you are a North supporter. I hope you, Wayne and everyone who wants the best for the club can get enjoyment out of it.
