Given todays game, with Lake performing well on Franklin while Scarlett sits on the sidelines after an act of ill-discipline, just seeing who you'd prefer.

Take away Scarletts premierships, this is just about the player themselves, not their achievements.

Given that I am biased towards Lake, as most Cats fans would be to Scarlett, I'd have Lake.

In my opinion he is stronger and faster than Scarlett. Plus he reads the game just as well, if not better.

Thoughts?

lol scarlett has beaten better forwards than franklin

scarlett was doing what lake does now 5 years ago

lake may be close now, but in his prime scarlett>>>>>>>>>>>>>lake

also you won't get a fair result with scarlett, everybody hates him

Not everyone is a huge fan of Lake, either.

Care to name these better forwards? I would have thought Franklin is as good as most that come to mind.

off the top of my head

lloyd (in his prime)
tredrea (in his prime)

I guess you are right, but lake wasn't really our main defender when those forwards were around.

If I had to pick a FB to line up for my team next week, I'd still have Lake.

Right now, Lake's a far better defender than Scarlett. Whine all you like but Scarlett doesn't even get the best forward anymore, Harry Taylor does.

Given today's game? Interesting time for a bulldog fan to ask the question, when, as you say, Lake had a good game and Scarlett sat on the sidelines.

Lake doesn't play full-back.
Williams and Morris are the tight defenders.
Scarlett is about 50/50 playing KPD and loose. And has been for 2-3 years.

Most "big name" (ie likely to be picked in AA sides) full backs are freed up by their coaches by taking the 3rd tall or dropping loose.

How often was Lake on Buddy or Roughead?
Maybe 20%???

He was on Buddy all game, just ran off him because it was clear Buddy wasn't going to chase.

Williams took Roughead, Morris was on brown.

Lake plays fullback, Williams CHB, Morris back pocket.

The only reason he wasn't at full back all day is because he was following buddy up the ground. Did you watch the game?

Scarlett plays on the 3rd forward, he played on Campbell Brown vs Geelong ffs.

What does that tell you?

Really should have said "given this recent round of matches"

Why was Scarlett on the sidelines for Geelong's game?

Better players stay on the park :D.

FYI, Scarlett plays FB. Yes, he played on Campbell Brown against Hawthorn, but I'm sure you don't need to be told that one game doesn't make an empirical study... do you?

It tells me that you consider Lake's best chance of winning a poll against Scarlett to be right after a round in which Lake played well and Scarlett didn't play at all.

I'd still have Lake anyway, but then again I am biased. As are you. Scarlett didn't play because he was found out for a questionable act on the field. Good players shouldn't do that.

Scarlett is shading it in this poll though so I'll keep quiet for now.

Lake's best is the best of the two, but Scarlett is consistently far better. Arguably the greatest full back of all time.

He did it once, to give Lonergan a chance to prove himself on Franklin, which he did.

Scarlett usually takes the deepest forward so he can remain in defence for the longest. When push came to shove he was moved onto Roughead last week. That's not because he was the backup plan, it's because he's still the best.

Geelong are planning for the future without Scarlo, and that's why we've given Lonergan and Taylor the big jobs the last two weeks. Scarlett is still an elite stopper, as he proved in the finals.

Stopping Buddy is no big deal really - everyone at Geelong has done it - Scarlett, Mackie, Lonergan, Taylor.

Not all the game. Lake spent a fair bit of time zoning off when Buddy went further up, IIRC Williams went with him.

Odd line of reasoning. Based on that, Aaron Hennemann > Dustin Fletcher, cos Fletch got suspended a bit?

Lake didn't follow Franklin when he went up the field where he was never going to cause as much damage but got him on the way back when he came closer to goal. When Buddy was near goals Lake was on him and murdered him

Which, given Tom Lonergan's performance last week, is not all that hard to do at the moment.

It's not just the Hawks vs Geelong game where Scarlett didn't get the best forward. What about Essendon vs Geelong? Scarlett played on Williams the whole game.

For anyone that thinks Lake zoned off Buddy while someone else took him, watch the game. He moved on him help in other contests yet at the same time, does a great job in making sure the loose ball doesn't go to Franklin. Plus, when Lake was on him, smashed him absolutely every time.

the comparisons being made in the media is scarlett vs silvagni as the greatest FB of all time.... so get real mate, lake isnt in the same league, Scarlett is simply one of the selected handful of great defenders of the history of the game

i have two games for you to go watch, go grab a copy of the 07 grand final, and watch scarlett rack up 34 touches at FB while keeping his opponents goaless, and also watch his game against adelaide in 07, where it was an armwrestle all day, even scoreboard, and scarlett got 37 touches and held his opponent goaless and single handedly won us the match of his own boot

the heights scarlett reached in his prime where above and beyond any other full back.

lake isnt in the same league compared to scarletts prime

he has been worked out

he is as predictable as a seconds hand on a clock, he only has his left side of the body and cant use his right, defenders have worked out how you play against him, he will never be able to perform at that same level again anymore he did in 08
