So far the Raiders have either requested or confirmed interviews with the following candidates:

  • Ben Johnson
  • Aaron Glenn (would only comply with the Rooney Rule once they've had a meeting with Glenn in person as opposed to a virtual meeting)
  • Steve Spagnuolo
  • Todd Monken
  • Robert Saleh (Rooney Rule candidate)

Will the Raiders ever attract an elite candidate?

Well Ben Johnson has accepted an interview, and he has been said this season to be very particular with who he would interview with this off-season.

I don't know about you but I'd consider him as elite as a candidate with no HC experience can be.

Yeah he's an elite candidate but I mean will the Raiders actually win his services? I don't think it happens, the Raiders never seem to be able to win those and have to resort to someone else as often happens

I would suggest Gruden was the prized candidate in January 2018, and Josh McDaniels was also extremely highly regarded in Jan 2022, getting a 6 year 75 million dollar deal.

When they hired Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable, Hue Jackson, Dennis Allen and Jack Del Rio they certainly weren't looking at the same top pool of candidates. And quite often in fact they wouldn't even get interviews with the top guys. But the last few cycles prior to the AP hire I would suggest were different in large part because Mark was willing to put down some big bucks, in combination with being in a state with no income tax, and having the best team facilities in the entire league.

The Raiders represent the clean-slate team, a la the [Washington] Commanders, where there are only a few essential pieces, such as Brock Bowers and Maxx Crosby. Vegas can be positioned for a big personnel and philosophical overhaul with Tom Brady now lurking among the owners. Only the Patriots are projected to have more cap space."

The Raiders' decision to move on from Pierce would come this offseason or next offseason when his contract is up, so it was not all that unexpected in the long run.

However, unless the Raiders make significant roster changes, especially at the quarterback position, they may find that many of the issues Pierce struggled to overcome will still be there after he is gone.
