When Fitzroy were playing in the AFL, the last game I went to was against Carlton at Princess Park in 1996. David Parkin was coaching Carlton and before the game he upset a few Fitzroy people by pronouncing that Fitzroy could have 10 minutes head start and they still wouldn't win, or words to that effect.

We jumped out of the box that day and then went missing after the first 10 minutes. We got smashed.

Does anyone else remember the Parkin comment? I do also remember him backing down when he was called on it and talking Fitzroy people up afterwards.

I was living in Warrnambool at that stage, so I didn't get to as many games as I had in the past. The last AFL win I was at was the 1994 Rd. 13 win against Hawthorn at Waverley. It was a cold and overcast day which saw us snatch a gutsy come from behind victory. I was mighty proud of the boys that day, especially Mark Zannotti who helped keep Dunstall goalless by plonking himself smack bang in front of his leading space all game. A kid called Chris Johnson bobbed up for a couple of mercurial goals that day and even Hoggie kicked 3 goals, which for him at Fitzroy was an absolute BAG!

Glad I made it to that one

I recall the Parkin quote coming in early 1995. We had just been thumped by Essendon and Carlton in the opening rounds before David uttered his comments prior to the Fremantle match in round three. We were brave in the Freo contest but ultimately decided to be generous and allow the Dockers to score their first AFL win.
