Re: Laurence Schache (1991 - 1992)

Wikipedia

Laurence Schache (17 October 1967 – 5 October 2002) was an Australian rules footballer, playing in the Australian Football League (AFL) with the Brisbane Bears and the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) with Sturt, West Torrens and Woodville-West Torrens. Born in Hopetoun, Victoria, Schache was zoned to the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League. He played in the minor grades at Essendon as a forward with some success, which included a haul of 25 goals in an Under-19s match against Sydney in Round 22, 1985, but he never managed to play a senior game for Essendon.

Schache moved to Adelaide in 1988 to play for Sturt before moving to West Torrens in 1989. Schache was drafted by Brisbane as the Number One choice at the 1990 Mid Year AFL National Draft and made his AFL debut for the Bears against Geelong in Round 4 1991. Schache played 17 games for Brisbane in 1991, winning the club's Leading Goalkicker award in his first season with 47 goals, including a best return of six goals against Adelaide in Round 14. Schache had a less successful year in 1992, playing 12 games for 17 goals, and subsequently was delisted by Brisbane at the end of the season after 29 games and 64 goals.

Schache returned to South Australia in 1993 to play for the Woodville West Torrens Eagles (West Torrens having merged with fellow SANFL club Woodville at the end of 1990). Schache played in the Eagles's first premiership but injured his knee the following year, forcing his retirement. Schache briefly coached Latrobe Football Club in Tasmania before returning to Adelaide, where he was diagnosed with Amyloidosis in July 2002[4]. Initially told he had five years to live, Schache collapsed and died at his home, three months later. He was 34 and left a widow and two children.

Quinlan did have the tendency of dishing out some cheap shots as commentator - I remember when he was regularly and petulantly ridiculing Brisbane player Laurence Schache in an early 1991 match, who went on to win the club's goalkicking that season.

1992 review

The Bears successfully tried a twin forward attack of LAURENCE SCHACHE with WA import JOHN HUTTON

Re: Laurence Schache (1991 - 1992)

Coodabeens

But a previous wearer of the Brisbane number 23 could well have left a lasting impression at the drum kit of League football. That player was Laurence Schache. Brisbane recruiting guru Shane O'Sullivan was excited about snaring with 1990 mid season draft pick number one the tall rangy forward from Hopetoun. Schache had had a stint at Essendon before West Torrens, Wayne Jackson's old club.

Laurie was 194 centimetres tall and 91 kilograms. He was harder to match up than Bryant and Mays. He spent the rest of 1990 getting into the groove of AFL footy. Come 1991 and Schache had the high hat and tom tom going from early in the season.

Brisbane finished the '91 season on the bottom of the ladder with three wins. Yet Laurie topped the side's goal kicking with 47. During 1992, Schache did okay. He copped a severe hamstring injury followed by a groin strain. He did well in the round 9 loss to Footscray at Carrara. Ran into an open goal. He was delisted at the end of 1993. A total of 29 games for 67 goals.

Re: Laurence Schache (1991 - 1992)

BigFooty thread

Former Brisbane Bear(early 90s) player Laurence Schache passed away this morning after a short illness....:(

He topped Brisbane's goalkicking in 1991 with 47 goals.

Was an extremely good player while at Sturt!!!!

A major reason for their resurgence under Merv Keane and rightly left the club when poor old Mervyn was sacked for the Jumbo who wasnt a coaches bootlace!!!!!

My Papa was in the same ward as him in the QEH, he didnt look well at all when I saw him a few weeks ago!

RIP

He was the Bears' leading goalkicker in 1991, but was delisted after the 1992 season. That was back when the Bears were based at Carrara and were real strugglers, but 47 goals in his first season at AFL level wasn't too bad.

Sad news. Sympathies to his family and friends and to the Brisbane FC.

I remember Schache at Brisbane, was a fairly reliable player.

Didn't John Hutton replace him in the Full Forward position a few years later 1992?

Condolences to family and friends.

Hutton took over as their main forward, kicked 8 goals in a match twice and was their leading goalkicker in 1992. However he was playing for Sydney by the 1993 season.

Schache was a maligned player in his brief career. I remember in one of his first AFL games some of the Channel 7 commentators harshly bagged him and wondered how he was able to be playing AFL football. It was duly noted how inane the criticism looked after he won the Brisbane goalkicking that season - he certainly wasn't the worst player going around.

RIP

I think Bernie Quinlan was the commentator who described him as the worst footballer ever.A bit harsh when it was only his 1st game.

Didn't Schache kick about 25 goals in a country league game before he was drafted ?

Yeah, I thought it was Quinlan and/or Ian Robertson who were bagging Schache but wasn't 100% sure.

In a way it was poetic that Quinlan went on to coach Fitzroy when they were a rabble in 1995. Considering their leading goal kicker that season was Chris Johnson with 25, I wonder whether Bernie felt Schache wasn't such a bad player after all.

As for the 25 goals, I believe he kicked that for the Essendon Under 19s in 1985 against Sydney.

Condolences to all family and football clubs involved with Laurence.
I played against him several times when he was at Gepps Cross. Considering the battering he took from our defenders climbing all over him, including myself, he stood up well, kicked our arse and proved to be a gentle giant.
Great player, nice bloke to have a beer with after the game.
RIP

Wow, i can't believe that he died. Didn't even know he was sick. What was it? He wouldn't of been very old either.

A few mates played for Gepps Cross and i saw him play a couple of times locally, always used to think it was funny to watch him play at such a (low, no offense) level after only just finishing in the AFL/VFL.

Sad news, thought this was just one of those remember those average player type thread.

Re: Laurence Schache (1991 - 1992)

Trivia Question

Name the player who was born in one state, was a club leading goalkicker for a VFL/AFL side in another state, a premiership player for the major league in a third state and sadly died less than ten years later?

Laurence Schache, raised in Hopetoun, Victoria, kicked a club-high 47 goals for Brisbane in 1991, played in the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles 1993 premiership, and died in 2002 of Amyloidosis at the age of 34.

That's right. Schache was a cult hero around Brisbane when he was there. In one of the saddest football stories I have heard, Schache collapsed and died in his kitchen in front of his young children

Re: Laurence Schache (1991 - 1992)

He was a more than capable forward. Was not exciting or glamorous but got the job done.

Bad run with injuries in his second year but there must have been something else going on behind the scenes because he was a good player for us. Was very surprised when he was delisted.
