Soldo is better than some of you think. He cannot get a regular game ahead of Nankervis and when he has he has done OK . Against us in round 24 this year playing second string to Nankervis he had 11 disposals including 8 marks and he also had 18 hit outs. Ivan Soldo isn't going to be a ten year proposition but he will do until Visentini is up to AFL standard. I have been a big fan of Sam Hayes but I reckon he has gone backward over the past two years.

Lycett is cooked and Teakle has gone so we have to do something to improve our ruck stocks.

I think the whole industry generally overrates draft picks. If a known quantity is available and will instantly improve the list with mid range picks you go for it.

I think the first round the chances are much higher of striking gold but with the mid range picks of 20-40 - not sure the strike rate would be that much better than some of the later draft or rookie picks.

for every Willem Drew there is a Joe Atley.
You only have to look at how Geelong do it.
No development ,no wait till he’s up to afl just go out and trade in what they need.

I agree with this to a point...

But when we trade entirely out of three successive drafts, that's going to have an impact any way you slice it. That is when you're selling the future to try and prop up the now. Except there's no proof that the now is good enough.

In short - Soldo is arguably our best ruckman, but it's 1st ruck or not in the team for him. You guys will like him if a deal gets done. His tap work is elite and he's a bit of a campaigner, which is a pretty crucial attribute for a big man IMO.
Sounds like a fairly good target for Port then. Proven he can play as the number 1 ruck (although he's yet to crack 15 games in a season), but that's his only spot in the team. Now moving into his late 20s, he's likely to play out his career as a backup if he stays.

It's the type of backup ruckman that probably needs to find a new opportunity at this stage with limited time left to try and play a few years as the lead ruck.

If we were to snare Ivan Soldo what would that do to our other trades? No maybe as I reckon we might need one of Ratugolea or Zerk-Thatcher to walk to the PSD. Would we need Jordan Sweet if we get Soldo?

8 marks!!!!???? That's 2/3 years worth of marks for Lycett in 1 game 😯

Going by current rumours and picks

25 for Rat
Duursma for BZT and 35
41 and F2 for Soldo
49 for Sweet

Is it just me or is the thought of 41 and a future 2nd overs for a guy who might not even get regular games?
If the rumours of what we are giving up are true, then you could view it as 41, 49 and a F2 to hopefully fix our ruck issues for the next few years, with what will hopefully be a good quality first ruck and a good quality back up, whichever way the two players end up taking the spots, which I think is fine. Collingwood just won the premiership with a Darcy Cameron / Mason Cox combo, anything that gets us away from playing the shell of Lycett and/or Teakle is an upgrade.

I certainly prefer that trade for that combo then I do Duursma + 25 for two less likely backline prospects.

I think this is a likely scenario.
I like him as a player.
Tough as nails, good overhead and a very good set shot for goal.
I'd rather keep him, but I think he's exactly what Port needs.
When he played with Nank how do he go as the Second Ruck?

If we get I’m not sure how he’d work with Sweet?

We are probably being a bit desperate but i don't think it is to avoid a bottom 8 finish, i think we genuinely think we are in the premiership window so are pushing hard towards that. whether that is right or wrong is up for debate. But i don't think the club is even thinking about a bottom 8 finish.

Having a competent ruckman for our young and promising midfield will make a big difference. And won't cost a fortune like Grundy.
Strangely we are desperate to win a flag but it’s a non contract year so Ken and the players will be going through the motions.
There definitely is no middle ground on this forum, you get both extremes at the same time.

Have the rules changed, because I didn’t think you could trade out any future picks from 2nd round on once you had already traded your F1? Ie, we’ve already traded our F1 so didn’t think we were allowed to also trade our F2

We got a 2nd back from Freo

Is the future 2nd we are offering tied to the one we got from freo? I can see them being a bottom 4 team next year so i hope not.

A ruck that can take a mark around the ground would be a dream.

I reckon its good business compared to the ridiculousness going on in our other trades. You'd hope we've done our diligence on the medical but Soldo/Sweet/Hayes/Visentini is a strong ruck division.

Hayes will get delisted if we get Soldo and Sweet

2017 Nank rucks by himself with a bit of help from Grigg and its Riewoldt and the many dwarfs in the forwardline and Richmond win the GF by 48pts.

2019 Nank gets help from Soldo and Riewoldt gets help from Tom Lynch and Richmond win the GF by 89pts.

In the game I cited in a previous post Nankervis also played. In addition to taking 8 marks Soldo playing as second string ruck had 18 hit outs to Sam Hayes' 10. Earlier in the season against St Kilda when Nankervis also played Soldo had 13 hit outs before being subbed off, presumably injured.

Soldo is no super star in the making but he is clearly better than what we have and if he can cover Lycett's role for a few years while Sweet and Visentini develop that is OK by me. The secret is not to pay overs for him.

In any case I am not sure how we are going to get 4 trades done in a day and Soldo, who is still under contract, may be out of reach. I note that Port are now saying we are also prepared to let Esava Ratugolea walk to the National Draft if Geelong won't do the deal. If he does it will be two players going to the Draft in the hope that they will be picked by the same club of choice. Not sure that has been done before. The bottom line is we have a big shopping list and not much credit in the trade bank.

I think you guys would be happy with your purchase , took two seasons to come back from his ACL in ‘20 , really got his confidence back sec half this season ,,,many suggesting gone past nank , ruckwork has always been very good , marking returned and while not prettiest kick for goal , often straight , trade is overs by extra oic 41 but tigers wouldn’t release him unless it was
