Re: Learner drivers

When I was on my L's, my parents decided to take a trip to Adelaide to help get my hours up. Knowing about the 80km limit, my dad called the SA equivalent of Vicroads and they told him that I could only go 80km's. I subsequently drove to the border, dad did the rest of the journey of freeway driving. Then on the way home he drove to the border and I drove the rest of the way home. I got close to 13 hours on that trip, it was a great way to boost them up a bit.
Very stupid. How do they expect interstaters to know the different rules?

Re: Learner drivers

That would be like not allowed a 17 year old QLD'er to drive in Victoria. You shouldn't have to scoop out all the ins and outs of every tiny little nuances among different governing bodies. Especially when you're more then competent.

Especially since if i had a NSW license, i'd be on my p's by now...

I'm currently a learner. I just turned 20 but I was in a car crash 3 years ago, broke both my legs, an arm, multiple facial fractures and all that kinda jazz. I only started walking again properly in September of last year actually. But I started learning again 4 weeks ago and my instructor said give it a couple of weeks and I'm going for the test. I'm fairly comfortable with driving now, it's almost second nature to me.

Re: Learner drivers

In my 2nd hour of driving today and got beeped by about 3 cars at a busyish intersection. Deserved it fully but the old self esteem did cop a bit of a hit. Was flying up until that point.

You're the prime example of people who deserve it.

What were you doing at a main intersection? Why did your parents/instructor let you drive around a main intersection?

Re: Learner drivers

I'd been driving around residential streets for a while and the instructor said I was ready. I was ready really, I was basically just driving straight up a main road for a while getting used to the increased speed. Wasn't really a main intersection, just had some confusing lights, had an up arrow hidden off to the left instead of the normal set of lights. Instructor was confused himself for a moment.

l have noticed afair few learner burners on the road lately.at this stage l dont have a problem with them.the one thing that really shites on the road is people turning left from the right side of the road and turning right from the left side.move over to the side your turning grrr.

I have had my Ls for 2 months now and the 80k speed limit in NSW is ridiculous. I believe that we should atleast do 100k to get used to the speed of normal highway traffic. Also I have trouble on occasions doing hill starts. Does anyone have some tips to help me and other learners who have this same trouble?
Any help appreciated

Putting up with ********s is all part of the learning experience, teach him to stay calm under duress.
I have friends who have been driving for 10+ years yet still wont drive in certain conditions because they were too sheltered through the learning process.
I show heaps of patience with learners but can't resist pulling out my favorite "Dad joke" whenever I see one stuffing up on the road, this involves yelling "Learn how to drive ********!!" at the top of my lungs.
I crack myself up with that one every time.

dont see how being a a$$ to a Learner driver on the road is part of the learning experience. everyone has to to learn at some stage and a huge part of that is gaining confidence on the road.

while i get frustrated if a learner is infront of driving to slow honking my horn isnt ging to make things any better so i just relax.

Just take off like normal, with perhaps a little more accelerator, and when you just about feel the car trying to take off take off the hand brake.

Thanks Magic Johnson i will put this into practice next time i have a drive

Got an email back from the freaking RTA when i asked them how fast i could drive:
Learner licence holders from other States or Territories must not exceed 80 km/h when driving in NSW. As an example, learner and provisional licence holders from the ACT may drive at the posted speed limit when driving in the ACT. However, when driving on NSW roads, an ACT learner licence holder is restricted to a maximum speed of 80 km/h. This is because NSW road transport law states that 'The holder of a learner licence must not drive a motor vehicle on a road at a speed in excess of 80 km/h'. Under NSW law, a 'learner licence' is defined to include a learner licence issued in another Australian state or territory. For more information on interstate learner drivers using NSW roads please see the below link:

www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/visitorstonsw/interstate_learners.html

Interstate drivers wanting to drive in NSW should read the RTA Road Users' Handbook or the Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, as applicable. These are available from any motor registry, or via the RTA website www.rta.nsw.gov.au.

Drivers from interstate should also comply with any condition or restriction applicable to their interstate licence when driving in NSW. For example, if a Victorian licence holder is required to wear spectacles or contact lenses while driving, then he or she should also adhere to that condition or restriction while driving on NSW roads.

Thinking about just risking it though and pleading ignorance...

What a ****ing stupid law. I drove up to Sydney and back when I was on my L's which took care of a fair chunk of the 120 hours. Most of the trip I was driving over 100 km/h, as I should have been, as they were low traffic rural highways and freeways.

The thing I don't get is driving on freeways at 100-110 km/h is often far easier/less stressful than driving in peak hour traffic at less than half that speed.

You should learn with the rules you are going to use when you are driving by yourself. It is illogical to restrict speeds of learners when they have a supervising driver, and then as soon as they get their P's they are qualified to drive at speeds that they haven't done before.

This :thumbsu::thumbsu: could not agree more. It is a load of bullsh*t that the Learner's here in NSW and in Tas are stuck at 80k an hour.

Yep surely it's safer to do 100km's on the freeway rather then 80? I know it mind sound stupid but simply going to the speed limit surely is one task you MUST master before going onto your P's. So what happens when A NSW'er does get their P's? They can now go 100kms? But they have no experience doing so!

And the interstaters is a stupid law. I hated the fact that people at my school could get a NSW license and drive to our victorian school in year 1/11!

On your red P's you can only go 90

It is such a stupid system
