News Lisa Alexander applies for North Melbourne senior coach position

Legendary Australian netball coach Lisa Alexander has put her hand up for the vacant North Melbourne coaching job, arguing her record of winning and experience at high performance coaching make her suited to the role.

Alexander said she had watched plenty of football throughout her life and had also played the sport, which combined with a formidable netball coaching record convinced her she was ready for the role.

It’s an interesting argument. Obviously she won’t have the tactical but we know that senior coaching today is so much more than that.

That said in the post-COVID smaller coaching structure world she would be more likely to struggle.

Yes part of it is agenda setting but she can certainly coach conceptually. Could she do it with a tactically strong senior assistant?

She is ****ing kidding herself, then again this screams out as an attention seeking effort

If she was a successful AFLW coach, then sure go for it. But when she has never been involved in the actual sport, it has to be a joke

Maybe North should interview Ang Postecoglu & Craig Bellamy too

In an era of inclusiveness and gender equity, I encourage... nay I demand, that North Melbourne appoint her.

Sam Mitchell is coaching Box Hill.
Like Lisa & think she has the goods but at least have some time proving your skills transfer. Until then Sam is in front of you Lisa.

It still wouldn't be anywhere near enough to be taken seriously unless she (or Nathan Burke, for that matter) also had experience as something like an assistant for a men's AFL team.

Suspect they will humour her and no more.
I'd be surprised if they do that much.

She needs to start her journey through the assistant coaching ranks first.
It's a tight market though given the soft cap has many clubs reducing assistant coaching numbers.

She made it pretty clear on SEN a while ago that she would actively seek an AFL coaching role in some capacity.

Might be worth coaching at some decent level first before assuming the skills will transfer over at AFL level, which was a bit how her interview came across.

BTW - not saying she cant coach , but maybe get decent AFL experience first

So Chris Fagan who is a school teacher never played the sport, Today a coach doesnt teach them to kick, he is more a manager, look at the soccer examples Avram Grant, Jose mourinho was an interpeter before doing his coaching licence, Andre Villas Boas to name a few

I’m also guessing Fagan didn’t say “I want to be a head coach in the AFL” and get handed the gig on a silver platter. She should have to work her way up.

agrre, but she has "coached" elite athletes at elite level, now i can only talk about soccer but you cant be appointed a coach or manager at an elite level without the neccesary tickets, i wasnt able to coach at that level until i had my fifa licence.

Chris Fagan was involved with the best side in the league for over a decade.

Listen to her interview with Whately on SEN.

I've never heard an ego like hers. She flat out drinks her own bath water.

She genuinely believes because she taught football in P.E in high school she can coach AFL football.

She thinks netball tactics are interchangeable with AFL and she thinks the high performance setup in the Australian netball setup is the envy of every sport in the country.

She has no interest in applying for an assistant coaching role because she thinks she's qualified for an AFL senior coaching role and it's only because she's a woman she wouldn't be selected. She flat out thinks she should be an AFL head coach or a director of coaching above an AFL coach.

She is absolutely delusional. Listen to the interview. Arrogance just drips off of her every word.

If an A-League coach insinuated they could walk into the Diamonds coaching roll, the pitchforks would be out as disrespecting women's sport, netball blah blah.

I doubt she'd even entertain doing the AFLCA level 3 coaching course, she would consider herself above it.

All of them were assistant coaches in their particular sport first
