Ash Centra was even surprising herself this year.
The midfielder knew that she had played some reasonable footy for Gippsland Power in round 2 of the Coates Talent League Girls competition back in April.

But even she was taken aback when the stats lobbed the next day.

Her numbers from that game read: 47 disposals, 11 marks, seven inside-50s and 4.2.

“I was actually flying to Bali when I found out the stats,” Centra said.

“My coach sent them to me and I was like, ’47?’. I was not expecting that.”

Centra was already firmly on the radar of AFLW recruiters before that game, but has been in No. 1 pick discussions for this year’s draft ever since.

An electric, X-Factor player, there isn’t much the skilful 174cm onballer cannot do.

Centra lists her greatest strengths as being her versatility to play a variety of positions and her signature composure with ball in hand.

As for weaknesses, they are few and far between.

Having a twin brother, Luca, meant the 18-year-old began her footy journey and developed skills earlier than most girls.

She started at Auskick alongside Luca and the siblings progressed through juniors together at College Junior Football Club in Sale.

Still playing with the boys in the under-12s in 2018, Centra was invited to the Sale & District Junior Football Association awards night but didn’t attend.

Missing the night meant that she was not there to collect the Gavin Dessent Award as the league best-and-fairest.

“I was nagging dad because we got an invite to go to the night and dad was like, ‘No, there’s no chance that you’re going to win it’,” Centra said.

“Then the next day people were calling and saying, ‘Oh, you won it, Ash’. I was like, ‘Oh, thanks dad’.”

In 2020, Centra left Luca with the boys and went to play with Sale City in the Gippsland Youth Girls League, before linking up with Gippsland Power ahead of the 2022 season.

She was present to collect another major award this year, winning the Coates Talent League Girls best-and-fairest after a super season for the Power.

“Being the first Gippsland Power girl to win that award was pretty cool to look back on,” Centra said.

“I was definitely very honoured.”

Centra looks up to Monique Conti, but won’t be joining the AFLW star at Richmond.

Collingwood holds the No. 1 draft pick, with the Magpies shaping as the likely landing spot for Centra.

“It’s pretty cool to be recognised as a No. 1 prospect, but I guess my main priority is just trying to get on the AFLW list and then start from there,” Centra said.

“You look at the draft pool this year and there’s so much talent. So to be in the position I’m in is pretty cool.”

Her tackling and pressure was very good, but would we really be worse off if we did trade her out?
Its either trade out a player like Campbell or step it up and maybe look at moving on a Butler.. .
Thats fair.
If we had to choose, a fringe player would be more likely
You would need clubs to be interested in our players and doesn't seem to be massive movement this year

We also need a pick within 18 for Patterson when a bid comes
Its an unbelievably bad system.
Hardly surprising the AFL didn't think it through.

Forcing a club to have a pick in each round to make sure there is always a pick available to use basically removes the ability for clubs to trade (without relying on other clubs good will).

Take 37 for example. If we trade that out, then we are effectively forced to use 19 or pray she doesn't get bid on 20 through to 38.
No club is going to take that risk.

We effectively can't trade unless we get picks very close to the ones we already have.
How absurd and woefully thought out is that based on the fact the AFL are trying to grow the game and garner interest.

I'm fine with that.

I suspect she's a very difficult person to manage and engage.
No one moves clubs that often without something going on that makes it challenging for her to stay in an environment.
Smoke / fire etc.
I'd prefer keep 19 (which they would want as part of the deal).

We have no fringe players that clubs will actively pursue.

As of right now, no one is coming to us as the $$ simply aren't worth the pain they are in for over the next 1-3 years!
So just sit this one out.....take a year of pain and work towards being an attractive choice by becoming an emerging side.

Good. Rather we focus on the draft.
Agreed.

If we were in a different time and different space, I would be all for it. But where we are at, it's not worth trading the capital.
If we want a key forward. surely there are some delisted ones or ones we can find in the state leagues. It's just best we use our first two picks before a bid for violet in the draft, so we get 3 good talents in the door.

Harris preference is hawks.

No Suprise

No Point coming to us at the Moment as we are a Basketcase

Get more Wins and Better chance to play well with the Hawks

I would have fallen over backwards if Harris came to us. It's not a surprise and I'd go to the Hawks if I was her ...... unless there was strong football connections with exisiting Pies players.

I rate Harris personally. No way I'd give up good draft picks though but would have most certainly welcomed her if it did work out at the Pies.

If her strong preference is the hawks then let her go there or stay where she is , never did like her, overrated imo

She’d improve us no doubt.
We couldn’t catch a cold up fwd this year.

But I would question how many years we’d get out of her…for a pick in the teens.
Just not worth it for where we are at.

Just take the picks and move on.

I would not give a Top 20 Pick for Harris

hawks dont even want to use pick 14 on her, who can blame them.
She's prob worth a pick in the 20's at this point.
She would def improve us, as we are lacking a real focus up forward. But I'd prefer to take our picks to the draft, find a forward there. Or someone for free.

No should give Top 20 Pick for her

Teams be happy for her stay at the Dees with that Price Tag

Are we giving up anything to get this second round pick is my concern

Collingwood had earlier shown an interest in Harris, but the Pies are no longer in consideration for the key forward, leaving it suddenly possible that Harris returns to Melbourne for season 2025.

Collingwood will secure extra second-round picks, Adelaide and Richmond will both shift up the draft order, while Geelong will land an extra first-round selection as part of the deal.
