For those not sure what time things kick off ...

AFL.COM.AU and the AFL Live App will be your exclusive home for the 2024 Telstra AFLW Draft, with all the action streamed live and free.

The broadcast for the first fully national AFLW draft will kick off at 7pm AEDT on Monday, December 16.

Yeah, we prob need one of each, given we lost a back up forward/ruck and a key defender. But someone to pair with Cronin would be nice. But scoring is a massive issue so a tall forward would be helpful too to pair with Clark. I'll be happy with either.
We already have a pairing for Cronin.....current BnF actually goes ok at CHB.
Karlson never got going and Wiz played fwd.

Breed / Centra (who is as tall as Ruby / Cronin) and Bri/Brit means there isn't space in the mid for Ruby next year IMO.

So i'd be creating a Cronin / Ruby (Karlson as backup) tall pairing and using Wiz as 'the best small' defender.
That's a very solid key defensive line up.
Even running Cronin / Karlson would be fine with me if they wanted to use Ruby elsewhere.

Up forward....no idea where to start with that one!

AFLW MOCK DRAFT 2024
Here we go, everyone.
It’s time for a mock draft.
This AFLW draft is beyond loaded, looming as the most impressive draft I have ever assessed; male or female. Without any concessions for expansion clubs or PSP, this draft looms as being relatively uncompromised and it is chock full of talent. This is a full mock draft and you don’t want to know how little sleep I have had over the last few days putting this together. I owe great acknowledgment to Peter Williams from RookieMe Central for a lot of the information I have used, although all evaluations are ultimately my own.

RULE REMINDER
  • All clubs must make at least 2 selections
  • Matching a bid for a nominated academy or father daughter player must be done with a club’s next pick, within 18 selections. For example, a bid at pick 1 can be matched with a club’s next pick up to and including 19. If a club cannot match, the player is just selected. Where a bid is matched, I will state which pick is being used to match. If numbers do not match due to the impact of a bid, it’s because the pick used to match the bid jumps up (example, if the Giants bid at pick 3 for Havana Harris, Gold Coast’s pick 19 comes up to pick 3 and the Giants pick again at pick 4).

CLUB LIST SPOTS (picks): These are correct as of 19:00 AEDT on 15 December 2024.
Adelaide: 2 (12,43)
Brisbane: 2 (15, 39)
Carlton: 3 (5, 23, 45)
Colingwood: (1, 26, 53)
Essendon: 5 (8, 11, 29, 35, 61)
Fremantle: 4 (13, 34, 38, 50)
Geelong: 4 (9, 13, 37, 59)
Gold Coast: 5 (19, 27, 30, 41, 46)
GWS: 2 (3, 21)
Hawthorn: 5 (14, 22, 28, 44, 49)
Melbourne: 2 (2, 20)
North Melbourne: 2 (36, 42)
Port Adelaide: 5 (17, 33, 40, 47, 51)
Richmond: 4 (10, 18, 31, 54)
St Kilda: 3 (32, 55, 58)
Sydney: 4 (4, 56, 60, 62)
West Coast: 4 (6, 24, 52, 57)
Western Bulldogs: 3 (7, 25, 48)
Right, let’s get after it.

ROUND 1:
Pick 1: Collingwood - Ash Centra (Gippsland Power)

The Pies finished last for a reason so need to add some talent, and Ash Centra is exactly that. One of the most fittable players in the draft pool and a perfect compliment to the likes of Bri Davey, Mattea Breed, and Brit Bonnici with her classy ball use and elite decision making, Centra looms as not just a great player but also a great fit. Centra is 174cm and can play either forward, at half back, or on ball, but probably plays her absolute best footy as a high half forward, using her athletic ability to get up the ground and getting her lethal foot skills into the game. A well rounded talent, Centra is described by Vic Country coaches as the best kick (male or female) who has come through their program who also brings strong hands overhead and an ability to move effortlessly through traffic. Expect her to make an immediate impact and walk in as one of the top 4-5 players at the club. To be honest, she’s that good, she probably walks right into the midfield.
If not her:
Frankly, it’s hard to see anyone other than Centra going number 1. If Havana Harris were in the open pool, it’s a real debate but since the Suns traded pick 2 and there is no need to ensure they pay fair value, the Pies should make a clear statement to Ash Centra that she is their player and the one they want. They may also decide to take Zippy Fish. Molly O’Hehir, or India Rahseed here, but those names are probably unlikely and it appears Centra is very much their player.

Pick 29: Collingwood - Claire Mahony (GWV Rebels)
A 181cm key forward with very strong hands who can pinch hit in the ruck, Mahony is a player with the ability to be absolutely anything in the AFLW. Whilst her athleticism isn’t a strength, it’s not a weakness either, with Mahony being capable of getting up the ground and getting involved in the play, with both her field and goal kicking being major assets in her game as well. On the rare occasions when she doesn’t clunk the mark, she follows up well at ground level and whilst she needs to be cleaner at ground level, she fights and scraps to stay involved in the play and refuses to give up on a contest. The Pies are in dire need of size and contested marking in their forward line and they have seriously struggled to score, and whilst young Georgia Clark is a good prospect as a contested marking option, but because she is shorter, she doesn’t have the aerial presence of others. Mahony is also capable of rolling into defence and is athletic enough to even cover some minutes on the wing, so has some nice versatility to her game but is at her best flying for marks in the forward 50. A good ball user as well, Mahony looks a very well rounded key forward with plenty of scope to develop.
If not her:
This part of the draft is interesting for Collingwood. They have plenty of needs from midfield, to forward, to defence, to their ruck of the future but can’t do it all with 3 list spots. Given they have Centra and will be able to add Violet Patterson later in the draft, I won’t be discussing midfielders here. Essentially, they can go for any forward or midfielder here and they will fit and as we enter a part of the draft with pretty much becomes a total lottery, I could mention 25 names. In the interests of brevity, Georgia Knight, Abbey Vicino, and Ashley Patton are decent forward options, with limited tall stocks remaining available, whilst defenders Alexis Greogr, Zoe Hargreaves, or Jemmika Douglas (all of whom can play other positions) will also be considered, as will Lucy Boyd and Esther Schirmer if she is still on the board. Daisy Flockart will also be a very strong consideration.

Pick 48: Collingwood (matching Port Adelaide’s bid with pick 54 (originally pick 53) -
Violet Patterson (Glenelg)
Why Port Adelaide bid:

Patterson is a tough, primarily inside midfielder who can also step out onto the wing if needed, what jumps out first and foremost when watching her is her defensive pressure, averaging nearly 8 tackles per game in the SANFLW this season. Beyond her work defensively, an underrated aspect of Patterson’s game is her explosiveness and ability to burst away from stoppages, as is her ability to keep going and get from contest to contest.
She would fit nicely at Port Adelaide as an additional ball winner who defends, which would help ease the burden on Maria Moloney and Abbey Dowrick from a tackling point of view, so she would be a welcome addition to the Power midfield. She is smart with ball in hand and works well in close as well, whilst still having that explosive speed to get away from stoppages and contests, so Port will have no issues bidding here.
Why Collingwood match:
See above. The Pies finished last so talent is something they are in dire need of and whilst Davey, Cann, and Bonnici is a terrific starting trio, their on ball rotation drops off very quickly after that. With Bri Davey 30 in January and Brit Bonicci 28 in August, adding a player 11 years Davey’s junior with decent size at 170cm, explosiveness, and an exceptional defensive game is something the Pies will be pretty happy to do, especially with their third round pick.
If not her (for Collingwood):
Nobody. If there is no bid, the Pies are obliged to take Patterson so they may leave her to go to Port Adelaide but given why I have Collingwood matching, the Pies will be more than content using pick 54 to match a bid here.

If that happens for us i'd say we've nailed it.

Ash-Centra.3fc9ce9.jpg

Ash Centra (Gippsland Power)

Ash Centra has been talked up as a No.1 pick prospect since late last year and her 47 disposal, three goal effort early in the Coates League season did nothing to change that perception. Centra models her game off Richmond star Mon Conti and like the league best and fairest, the Gippsland Power product is set to be appointment viewing.

Drafted: COLLINGWOOD

We say: It would be a shock if Collingwood went in another direction here. Centra is set to be a Magpie. A bid for Havana Harris is unlikely with Collingwood keen for the No.1 pick title to belong to their own.

These are actually my picks. 👍

I'm not sold on Ruby starting the guts, I just don't think she's got the laterally awareness. I'd also shift Butler down back.

Jordy can remain as ulitity. Fingers crossed we land Mahony.

Yup i 100% agree.
I thought Ruby played awesome in the middle this year.....for a starting AA CHB!

You could tell it wasn't coming naturally for her.
She just wasn't great in traffic and she didn't have the awareness (as you said).
Don't get me wrong, she was more than serviceable....but i think she is better for the team as an interceptor / rebounder.

Don't know what to do with Jordy. Feel like HBF is her natural position.
She's such a good user, so i understand why they want her kicking fwd. But i think she gets lost on the wing / HF.
I'd settle her and Wiz back in defense and just leave that alone.

Lavinia Cox will be a star. Is a genuine freak athlete. Amazing basketball player. Lightning quick and great hands. Slight build. But spatial awareness from basketball shouldnt be underated.

Watched countless hours of her basketball games.

Will be a gun wherever she goes.

Thanks for the heads up .... I hadn't heard of her. Nice touch on the footskills in the youtube and obvious good in traffic.

DRAFT RANGE: 40-60

In the youtube you'll see Ash in a bit of play too.

"While Gippsland Power’s Ash Centra will be the first name read out, there is not much guaranteed about what to expect."

"A late draft bolter is Bendigo Pioneers’ Lavinia Cox, with the most athletic player – based off Draft Combine data – tipped to now land in the first round. "

Pie 4 Life has taken a gamble with our 2nd pick, you'd think it would be a key defender or key forward who is available I guess

#29 – Collingwood Taya Chambers (East Fremantle / Western Australia)

Collingwood father-daughter Violet Patterson is tipped to make it into the third round and to the Magpies’ third and final selection

Yeah thinking Chambers or Mahony, but could be anyone. A lot of talls are off the board by then. So went for height and athleticism. It's too difficult to try and predict though, it's a complete crapshoot outside the top dozen.

A bit like the mens draft this year. Very even and hard to predict. But yeah you'd think height would be the priority at either end.

We only have 3 list spots.

Looking at our players. 24? (I assume schutte and Clark are contracted, or have been given an extension, unless last year draftees are on 2 year deals..)
+1 new rish
  • 2 trade
  • 3 draft = 30 players, so thats it.

But this on the chance we have or will re-sign Remmos.

(ivey and Ingram were train on players so not on the list)

Yeah draftees are on two-year deals now, that came in last year I believe.

That explains why we hadn't heard of extensions for the other two beyond this year. I wasn't sure if that came in last year, or whether its this year. But thats good to know.
