Whilst i do hate Matthewn Lloyd with a passion, I think he's right ont he money here, a midseason draft has been long overdue, and teams should be able to top up their list mid season just like the nrl and many other sports do, it's been a massive success in the nrl, esp players who have been put on short term contracts

What does every1 else think?

Good idea in theory. In practice, it may be a little more technical though as a lot of the players nominating would have existing contracts already for other clubs (i.e. WAFL, VFL and SANFL). Getting them out of these contracts may be hard and I think it could cause considerable damage to those leagues as fans wouldn't be happy that their best players every year get drafted half way through the season.

That being said, I still like the idea and think it should be done. I do have concerns though how effective it would be. AFL Players are elite fitness and I just wonder whether a lot of players can step up midseason and make any impact. Its a huge jump fitness wise especially when you are making it midseason.

I would love to see it, I think each club should be limited to one or two picks. I'm not sure how you would determine the order, perhaps your position on the ladder at mid season?

I would rather see Free Agency continue into the season till say round 15-16 and any player that was available in the draft (oh, did I mention that they should move to a one draft system) but not picked up is available to be signed at any point up until those rounds to replace injured players.

I personally don't like the idea of midseason trades, and a question whether the team or the player get anything out of it. I mean, your coming into a completely new team half way through the season and expected to perform the same? I can understand if you get dumped by your team for some reason midseason (barry hall mid last year) and could still play well, but without a preseason behind you with your team how are you going to contribute? Maybe if we were dealing with a multinational player base like they do in soccer where kids finsh school and stuff like that at different times of year, but otherwise I can't see the argument in favour of a mid season draft.

Id much rather see mid year "loans", where a team takes a player for the remainder of the season. If the player is from a non AFL club (i.e SANFL or VFL etc etc) then the AFL club that loans him can get first option on him if he is not already an AFL aligned player.

Hell no. Imagine the tanking clubs loaning out all their decent players to premiership pushing clubs...

well if your a lucas or robbo playing most weeks up to the midseason draft, your more than likely ready to go with a solid fitness base

great idea, win win for all parties afaics:thumbsu:

It should be a mid season rookie draft. They can only stay on the teams Rookie list for the rest of the year that way if the team wants to keep him they have to elevate him before the start of the next year

Great idea. Would be great to be just sitting about 6th, your key forward goes down with a season ending injury and you can draft another for the finals. Or you need another outside mid and you realise you need to get one in time for finals so you can go get one.

I have no idea how it would work though

Maybe you could loan players to other clubs. Eg, Geelong have a key back go down and Collingwood have a key forward go down they could swap Posaidly for Shaw. Although this would be crap for the players as team loyalty might be thrown out the window after stuff like that happened. Maybe ill let the finer points to other people.....

No way, would effect other leagues.. such as wafl sanfl vfl etc..
There are some real LOYAL VFL fans out there, that would be gutted if there best player got drafted by a AFL team. Another reason why it would be a big no for me is because, that player that gets picked up from VFL WAFL probably wont play much AFL and all it does is ruin other football leagues and teams for a premiership

no way

i dont want new players coming in and out of teams midseason it'll just change the dynamic too much

Part of being a good football club is recruiting and developing wisely to ensure all positions are covered in case of injury.

A midseason draft simply rewards teams who are shit at recruiting and contingency planning and allows them to be lazy but just plucking whoever is in form out of the VFL or WAFL.

We already have a rookie list which now includes mature aged rookies. We dont need a midseason draft for players not good enough to make that list.

It's a shit idea and not needed at all.

Kicking 15 goals in the GVFL isn't going to change anyones mind about not selecting you are the start of the year.

You get 44 spots on your list, along with all the rookies who can be upgraded, it's more than enough. You can't use injury as reasoning for something like this. If you can't get it right at the start of the season, bad luck.
List management is just another one of the factors you have to take into account going into the season. This just rewards shit house list management.

If you can't get through 25 games for a season with 52 different blokes, get some people who are actually qualified to be employed down at your club.
