I think it's Dan Marsh's last season this year, and despite being around for 16 years, has never really ever been touted as a contender for the national side.

Averages 38 with the bat and 45 with the ball, handy, but hardly outstanding. Amazing to last 16 years with those sorts of numbers which have been boosted by playing lower level county sides also.

Who else can you think of? Nick Jewell seems to have been around forever with similiarly low test chances throughout. Paul Nobes was the standard bearer here also..

Siddons played for Australia (albeit once) though, and was consistently talked about however...

Jamie Cox. Horribly unlucky not to play Test cricket. 2nd most shield runs of all time behind Boof Lehmann. unfortunately played in an era of really good opening batters, taylor, elliott, hayden, langer etc

Brad McNamara seemed pretty useful for a long time for NSW, and was never really in the national frame.

Played a couple of Aus A matches, back early this decade. Though his form fell away quickly.

I think he did last year as well?

Dan Marsh is the first that comes to mind for me as well. The recently retired Greg Mail also managed 70-odd FC matches.

Re: Longest serving member of the first class scene without ever seriously challenging for higher ho

Grant Lambert has been pretty much on the fringe of the NSW team for the past 8-9 years, which is why I'm so angry every time he plays a game.

If you play for Aus A I don't think it necessarily means you are in the mix for an Australian spot. Damien Wright has been around for ages, and played a few good games for Aus A over the years, but I doubt he has ever seriously been in Australian calculations.

Was 12th man on a couple of occasions a few seasons ago for the ODI team.

But if you take ODI's out yes you could say his name, along with players such as Micheal Div.

Wright? When was that? :S

Seccombe was also the back up keeper in the 2001 Ashes squad. Carseldine was also seriously considered last year during the ODI series against SA.

Shaun Young SHOULD be in this category. :/

Re: Longest serving member of the first class scene without ever seriously challenging for higher ho

Young was obviously lucky to get a game, being in the right place at the right time but I think the stick he cops is a bit harsh. The guy averaged 38 with the bat and 35 with the ball, so he's no worse than a Cam White or Andrew McDonald.

Re: Longest serving member of the first class scene without ever seriously challenging for higher ho

There was a time once, when arguably Australia's best opening pair didn't play for Australia.

Hills and Cox were the best opening partnership for 3 consecutive years, 2nd was Taylor and Slater.

One pair never got the chance for higher honours, the others played probably 100 tests between them.

Re: Longest serving member of the first class scene without ever seriously challenging for higher ho

Jimmy Maher for the Test team.

And Stuart Law if not for his 54*.

Re: Longest serving member of the first class scene without ever seriously challenging for higher ho

Since everyone else from the Tasmanian shield side in the 90s has been listed, better add Rod Tucker to the pile. 100 FC games as a player, and now has the chance to qualify as an umpire too :p
