He may well have real realized that he’s gotten all that he can out of the group.

They clearly have the succession plan in place with Cox, hence why he didn’t take the WCE job. It was either fast tracked by the Swans, or Longmire walked early so it didn’t get messy. Gives him time to line up another job (maybe Tassie).
