Lonie shines in time trial

Nathan Lonie has made an auspicious start to his AFL career with Port Adelaide by shining in the club's first pre-season training run on Monday.

The former Hawthorn half-back/wingman's advanced fitness was evident as he was among the leaders in a three-and-a-half-kilometre time trial in the north parklands opposite the University of Adelaide gymnasium.

Lonie, 22, and Brad Symes, 20, led Port's younger players, although they were shaded slightly by former Brisbane Lion Tom Logan, 20, who is doing the pre-season with the Power in the hope of being drafted.

Steven Salopek, 20, ran the fastest time in a solo run after the group, which did not include Port's senior players, who will start training on Saturday morning.

Former North Melbourne forward Daniel Motlop, 23 - who, like Lonie, became a Port player during trade week early last month - also had his first run with his new teammates, who were impressed by new-look coach Mark 'Slim' Williams, who has shed eight kilograms.

Asked whether he was surprised or disappointed Hawthorn was prepared to let him go (after 64 AFL matches), Lonie said: "Not really. Of course, all my friends I'd played with for years were there, but I was looking for a new start and Port Adelaide were good enough to give that to me, so I'm looking forward to repaying them and hopefully have a good year. It's a great feeling to come to such a great club …"

Lonie said he hoped to 'slot into the backline or on a wing and play a role for the team'.

"I just want to play league footy so that's why I'm here, pretty much," he said. "It's obviously very exciting. Port Adelaide obviously won the flag (in 2004) and played in the finals last season. I want to play finals footy …"

Asked whether he felt he was a 'walk-up start to Port's top 18', Lonie said: "No - no way. There are 20 guys who weren't here today who are starting (training) on Saturday. They're already in. We've got to work our way in and hopefully I can get a game."

On the inevitable comparisons with fellow long-kicking left-footer Stuart Dew, Lonie laughed and said: "Stuey Dew's got me covered. He's a beautiful kick. If I come in behind him I'll be pretty happy."

Lonie is living temporarily at Kane Cornes' house at Henley Beach.

"I know Kane Cornes very well," he said. "I went on a youth tour with him to Ireland a few years ago, so I'm staying with him and he's looking after me, which is good.

"He'd been in contact with me over the trade period. He was good. He's a good friend of mine so I thought if he's here, I'll come and play with him, and we'll have a good year, hopefully."

Encouraging signs though its too early to pass judgement. but at least the enthusiasm is there. Go u good things...

WRT Logan... don't believe everything u hear. The media spin-doctors in this state always give the kudos to the cows acrosss the road. Let's see where he ends up...

Not that I like to be negative, but......

How many of these "Player X is burning up the track during pre-season" articles will we see this year?

They should ALL be burning up the track!

He's hit three fours in the one over. A delicate glance to fine leg, a lovely drive through the covers and a late cut through where third slip normally stands. All wonderfully controlled strokes straight out of the coaching manual. :thumbsu:

I know what you mean, but the more the merrier.

I dont want to read articles where player x hurt himself and has been set back 4 weeks

Salopek did a lone run, does this mean he slept in or is this part of getting him focused.

One assumes Kane is still on holidays.

Senior players start next week. Sala was late (no reason given) so did a lone run, and did the best time of the lot.

I had to laugh at Channel 9's spin on training - "crows target upstages Port training". Even tho they don't start for 3 weeks, 9 managed to turn it into a story about the crows. Funny thing the draft, how you don't always get the player you want. Channel 7 even went so far as to suggest Logan wants to be drafted by Port ... the temerity

Well done, Toots. Saves us going over to the other thread in an attempt to keep score. You should paste your post over there (if you see what I mean), and we can compare results for both Lonie and Motlop.

I'll do it post haste! :D

Salopek slept in, thats why he did a lone run.

Gotta take all these articles with a pinch of salt. Every player at every club is having their best pre season ever and looking at having their best year yet.

I'm expecting Lonie vs Symes to be the big battle this preseason, because from what Lonie said, it looks like they want the same job. As do Shattock and Surjan, of course.

Be good to see him play next year, I think he will be a useful player for us. It will make me happy if he plays next year, I wouldn't mind perving on him every match :D

He has good skills, but it's easy to look flash when there's no heat on. Let's hope the receiver streak (I'm trying to be diplomatic here) in him doesn't come out too early.

I'm also betting that it'll only take a few weeks for a similar article to appear about my old mate Surj. ;)

Lonie, fit and kicking long and trying to out do a fit and healthy Dew, with both playing HBF or Wing and a fit Junior playing HBF or on the ball, with those long penetrating kicks, as the old AFL ad said, "Port kicking long and quick to a tall, strong, forward line with willy small men who can read the crumbs, like Wangas, Mahoney, senior Burger, Motlop, not stuffing around with short passes, I'D LIKE TO SEE THAT." :thumbsu:
