New event for LA. Put this in the general thread as I have been talking about LA 1500m course but this does belong in this thread as well.

The Rowing News article I got the 2nd picture above from, dated 13 July 2024, says;

Beach Sprint Rowing, a format of the Coastal Rowing discipline, will be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games program for the first time. The Beach Sprint Rowing venue has not yet been announced.

The International Olympic Committee announced today that Beach Sprint Rowing, a format of the Coastal Rowing discipline, will be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games programme, alongside Classic Rowing. For the first time, Rowing will be featured in two different disciplines, both set to be showcased at the heart of the Olympic Games.
The inclusion of Beach Sprint Rowing in the 2028 Olympic Games programme is the outcome of a decade-long development of Coastal Rowing with the active support of our 159 members and rowing communities across the world. World Rowing has embarked on an ambitious, global growth strategy for the discipline, underpinned by increased investments across geographies and participation in high-profile multisport events.

In 2023, Beach Sprint Rowing was featured at the World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals in Barletta, Italy, after being part of the Mediterranean Beach Games in Greece. The format will also be part of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal and the 2026 Commonwealth Games, in addition to other high-profile Continental multisport games and World Championships taking place every year. That global growth strategy will continue with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
“The inclusion of Coastal Rowing at LA28, through the Beach Sprints format, is expected to be transformational for our sport in terms of global exposure, and in making an exciting form of rowing accessible to new populations, said World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland. We believe Beach Sprint Rowing has the potential to enhance the Olympic programme by embracing beach culture and our shared values of universality, gender-equality and sustainability, while delivering genuine innovation in sport, broadcast and fan entertainment.

The final decision on the events, quotas and competition formats will be taken by the IOC Executive Board after the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Three medal events will be proposed by World Rowing: the men’s solo (one athlete); women’s solo (one athlete), and the mixed double sculls (two athletes). For the first-time ever, Rowing would feature a mixed event at the Olympic Games.
As for Classic Rowing, the Olympic regatta will be staged at the Long Beach Marine Stadium, the 1932 Olympic Games course. The programme will not include the lightweight double sculls, with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games marking the last time when lightweight rowing is featured on the Olympic programme.
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from 14 to 30 July 2028. The dates and events of the Classic Rowing and Beach Sprint Rowing competitions will be confirmed at a later stage.
The attribution process for the World Rowing Coastal Championships & Beach Sprint Finals in 2025, 2026 and 2027 – which will be the first qualification opportunity for the LA28 Olympic Games – is due to open soon, and expressions of interest can already be submitted to World Rowing.

That is G squared, 16 year old - turns 17 in December, Gout Gout, who ran that 100m above in 10.29 seconds at the Queensland championships in March. He’s also run a 20.69 200m which is pretty impressive as well.

In April 2023, aged just 15, Gout Gout broke the Australian under-18 men's 200m record with a time of 20.87 seconds, which was held by Darren Clarke 40 years earlier and shared with Paul Greene who ran in the 90's.

Whilst he is impressive, like Darren Clark was as a 17, 18 and 19 year old, its bloody hard to win medals against men and when you become a man.

The local ABC station in LA took a look at LA's preparation for the Games a few days after Paris ended.

Looks like ABC's LA station didn't put the next day's story up on youtube account looking at the accommodation at UCLA, transportation and traffic and the legacy LA organisers want to leave, as post 1984 and the $200m+ profit they made under Peter Ueberroth's leadership they set up LA84 Foundation for promoting youth sports in Southern California, educating coaches and maintaining a sports library.

According to this Wiki page the Foundation got $93m of the $232m ie 40% of the profit ( 60% went to the USOC) and is still functioning today. It invested the money and has net assets of $180m+ after distributing over $200m over the last 40 years for infrastructure, coaching and grants to athletes. See;

However they did put this story up on the new Intuit Dome built by LA Clippers owner and ex Microsoft executive and CEO Steve Ballmer. It had its grand opening that day. All the basketball at 2028 Games will be played here.

Its within 2 or 3 kms of the LA Forum and the owners did everything they could to block the building of this stadium. In the end Ballmer purchase the Forum for $400m USD and its basically now a music venue as the Lakers and LA Kings moved to the Staples Center, as did the Clippers, closer to downtown LA in 1999.

The Forum hosted all the basketball games in 1984 but wont play a part in the 2028 Games.

The Intuit Dome will host all the basketball games and the handball finals. They have a game face app which means you scan your face into an account you set up and you don't have to show or scan a ticket to get into the arena. That has some interesting implications - good and bad.

Your first keep your eyes on this kid post

Haha 9 News Adelaide showed this footage as last story of their sports segment tonight.

Lazy journalism.

They said 10.2 not 10.29 and didnt say it was from the Queensland championships in March this year. Way they reported it, made it sound as if the championships are on right now. Didnt even say the name of the athlete.

Haha now Fox Sports have picked up the story.

But at least they have given the full context and history of when the run was and his proper times and used his name.

They have also embedded the World Athletics tweet with video from April 2023 when he ran a 20.87 200m as a 15 year old. I saw this tweet at the time and was the first time I heard of G squared as I dubbed him after that tweet. I call his countryman who plays for my footy team, Aliir Allir A squared.

It's a good article and finishes off with - Gout will have another chance to demonstrate his talent this coming week as a member of the Australian team at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, commencing August 27.

I was going to keep my eye on the U-20 championships, will now have a bit of extra interest in it.
