First cousin to Nick Dal Santo.

Luke Stanton

Ht: 191 cm Wt: 79 kg
Junior Club: Northern Knights
Position: Wing/ Utility

Stanton is a superb athlete who looks like an AFL player. He has been an AIS scholarship holder and has been earmarked as a potential AFL player for the last 3 years. Cousin of Nick Dal Santo, though a completely different beast.

Strengths: Standout athlete. Tall who can run long, hard, fast and is pretty agile as well. Got enough of the footy for a bottom aged player and progressed sufficiently by the end of the year. His game against Calder in the Preliminary Final was his finest game at TAC and would have boosted his stocks considerably.

Weaknesses: Kicking! Clumsy technique and tends to give the ball too much air. Would like to see him kick through the ball and thus produce kicks which travel through the air much faster. Stanton isn't the cleverest footballer going around. Often runs to silly positions on the field and can be exposed in situations where his athleticism cannot save him.

Stats: TAC 2007. Only played 8 games this year. Averaged 16 disposals per game. His kicking effectiveness is a worry with 2 out of 3 kicks being rated as effective. Took only 3 contested marks for the year which is disappointing for a player of his size who usually competes against shorter opponents.

I remember watching him play and he does look a lot like Cam Mooney!!! Played as a tall wingman, seemed to be able to get loose a lot and collect posessions, I considered him as a very worthy darkhorse and good late pick let alone a rookie draft pick. Pretty happy Jan!

Like most rookies he will be a project player but I think we have a lot to work with here, probably play at half back a bit I think.

Good to see we are learning our lesson about drafting players with shit kicking skills.

Its hard to find the complete package 2nd rnd of a rookie draft.
Would you prefer a slow midget without pace but good footskills Thy ?...........was hoping Hartlett was going to slide to this pick but Port pulled the gun on him early in the ND

Is prone to the odd brain explosion and mistake on the ground, but he's generally a pretty good footballer. Does have AFL footballer written all over him, and under the guidance of Harvey and Harris, he could blossom into a reasonable footballer at AFL level.
Well That's not good enough blossom into a reasonable footballer, play 5-10 games a year? I want a good player, nice if great but good, that's Harvey and Harris job to make him one. I'm hoping they get rid of his poor kicking style or what ever.It be nice if he could make CHF with descent skills.

I still would have taken a shot with him and the skinny Gartlett after looking at the rest taken, not sure on Hill and Jacobs, but who knows maybe Jacobs might take Warnock spot if he can't stand up in AFL if he brakes down. Bentley before Carl Peterson no way.

What are our expectations? Not every player is going to be the gem that Dean Cox was.
The rookie draft is simply that. Rookie. A chance to take a punt on someone who might have the goods. Operative word 'might'.
I think we've done alright.

Interesting pick, not sure what to make of it.

We placed a particular emphasis all throughout the draft period to focus on our skills, but Stanton seems to really struggle in this department.

I guess it just got to a stage in the draft process where we had to pick a player that we rated higher than others that may have had better foot skills than Stanton.

He's very athletic and pretty tall so hopefully Harvs can teach him a thing or 2 about working hard to get the best out of oneself.

Seriously, he is not that bad of a kick! He tends to go the longer option downfield instead of the short safe or 50/50 option.
He is used mainly on the wing, fnds space and generally creative by hand.
Has been used at CHB playing on the more mobile CHF's of the competition, but can play as a running half back in defense which is where he may start off.
