From all appearances, Mafia II looks like it should offer everything that the original game did but more of it, and all of it better. The huge, interactive world, improved driving, improved gunplay, and deeper plot should pull in anyone who enjoys virtually stealing cars, or filling bad guys full of lead, or well-developed stories along the lines of excellent gangster movies such as Goodfellas. The game is scheduled to launch this year simultaneously on the PC, the Xbox 360, and the PS3.

Looks like it will be a good sequel. I'm really looking forward to it.

NIIIIIIIIIICE!!!!

This is probably my most anticipated non-exclusive game this year, Mafia was brilliant, and I expect Mafia 2 to be just as, if not more brilliant than the first.

From the small amount of info released(Not just the stuff from that site) it looks as if it will not only be taking a step forward, but it will be taking HUGE steps forwards.

Graphically, the game looks stunning too(Watch the glass break!).

Finally a release window as well, Fall 2009(So Spring AU, Sept-Nov), at least I'm guessing they are using the US Fall, don't know if the UK Fall is at a different time considering the guy was a pom he might have been using the UK Fall.

Does look very good, there are a few things I noticed though, one being the aim looks fairly poor, I don't really like the cross type reticule, is usually too inaccurate and rarely gets coupled with a good game, hope it can be tweaked or changed as it isn't really the best aiming system that can be used(IMO).

Also noticed that it seems to take a lot of shots to kill somebody, unless it's a headshot, seemed like about 4-5 bullets were needed for most body shots and about 10-15 from the tommy gun(Could've just been a douche behind the controller and was missing 90% of the shots therefore making it seem like more to kill someone), hope that can be at the stage that was mentioned in the interview(Where it is 2-3 body shots and your dead, much more realistic).

Obviously there is still a lot of polish left to go in the game, there were quite a few things that still look a little unfinished, but overall I am still hopeful this game can carry on the brilliant gameplay/story of Mafia.

Delayed until 2010.:(

MAFIA II DELAYED UNTIL 2010
Take-Two has announced that BioShock 2, Mafia II, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption have all been delayed until Fiscal 2010.

"The decision to shift a release date is never an easy one, especially with a product as highly anticipated as BioShock 2," says Chief Executive Officer of Take-Two, Ben Feder. "We felt that it was essential to invest the additional time to ensure that this title will deliver what its fans expect and deserve. As a result, we will now be launching sequels to several of our strongest franchises -- including BioShock 2, Mafia II, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption -- during the next fiscal year."

Technically this could mean that they might be released in late November (since the "fiscal year" is silly), but I wouldn't get my hopes up. This really opens up Take-Two's release schedule for the later part of 2009, and leaves them with very few AAA titles. While I doubt anyone is too shocked to see Mafia or Max Payne go, finding out that BioShock 2 isn't making '09 is full of awfulness and suck.

Set for an August release.

OK, I think I'm starting to get the hang of this forum. HBK, would I be correct in saying you wouldn't have posted that info were it a 360 exclusive? :p

And now I sort of realise why you have GoW III and LBP2 as your potential GOTY's. Makes sense now. :D

For one I own a PS3, I wouldn't exactly have any real reason to post this news if it was for 360 or Wii for that matter (and I do own a Wii). I absolutely loved Mafia and have clearly shown a fair amount of love for this upcoming game (over several Mafia 2 threads actually)...so it's hardly like I've just suddenly grown fond of it for that...

GoW3 is strangely plenty of other people's GOTY's too atm FWIW (only 2 of my top 5 GOTY so far games were PS3 only titles as well). Again LBP was an insanely good game backed up by plenty on here with plenty of hype as well...

SMG2 might be fantastic and all, but I have all of 6 titles on the Wii and have actually played 3 of them and haven't turned the Wii on for about 4 months. Apart from that I'm struggling to find any other titles that would/should or could really contest a game like GoW3 or LBP2 for GOTY status on a system I have and can play.

But yes...I get it...

The demo for Mafia 2 is now available on the PSN (US Store, probably Friday for AU Store) and XBL.

Just had a go of it and here are my impressions.

First things first, the game looks very nice. Has a really distinct visual style, very varied and a lot of really unique looking places all round. There's plenty of detail and little touches, the glass is great and realistic (which has been shown off a fair bit in the past), also little things like committing a crime in a store and then having the cops put up police tape over the door. The character models for the most part are well done too.

Now for those who like in-game nudity, you get a real treat with REAL in-game nudity...that is you can find 5 Playboy magazines you get a picture of an actual nude chick from back in the day this game is set (in the demo it's 5, in the real game it will be a whopping 50 pictures). If you want the locations of said magazines to make it easier than blindly looking, here you go.

The sound is very good as well, a real stand out from Mafia it's continued on here. Some good voice work coupled with fantastic sound effects and a lot of nice little touches.

Gameplay wise is a little hit and miss really. The shooting mechanics are just 'ok'. The reticule (as I've had doubts over for a long while now and said as much in the 6th post) is big and clunky and the controls are a bit strange (R1 to reload, X to go into cover, L1 to sprint) so they're hard to get used to. It's not terrible shooting, but it's not smooth either.

Cover is a bit sticky, you go into it and you have to push the button to go out of cover. But it works fairly well.

The driving is a bit of an arcadey GTA IV, you can switch driving to simulation which turns it basically into GTA IV driving, which I know a lot won't like. The stringent laws return in Mafia 2 as well, so that means you HAVE to drive under the speed limit or you'll get pulled up by the cops. On top of that if you crash too hard into a car or barriers or anything really health gets taken off you and you can even die if you hit hard enough.

The mission you get is fairly cliche so there's not a whole lot of explaining to do in regards to it. But it's not bad either.

Really not sure where I stand with it after the demo to be honest. I loved Mafia and there's a lot for Mafia 2 that have looked to be brought over and improved on and the story looks like it will again be fantastic. It doesn't look like it will go the way of The Godfather 2 which is turning out a shoddy sequel that has nothing on the original, but I can't say whether it will be worlds better or even if it will actually be better than the first.

Set for release in 16 days, I guess I will make my mind up over that time. As it stands at the moment I'll probably be waiting until it hits the $50 mark.

Edited for minor laughs.

http://physxinfo.com/news/3628/mafia-ii-demo-tweaking-physx-performance/

That shows a tweak for the Physx performance on PC (the demo came out on Steam the same time as the consoles), that allows for some more customization. I've turned off all the cloth physx effects off for everyone but the main character and left all the extra particle effects in, and this raised my framerate by a large margin. Just a little tip for those who threw all the settings on max and were a little disappointed with their uber-rig's sluggish framerate, as the game itself is optimized really nicely for the most part.

This should obviously work for the full game, also.

Completely new to the Mafia games. Had a look at a few youtube videos & I like what I saw.
I love openworld games All GTA's, Saints Row, infamous etc (excluding just cause2, demo didn't impress me)
From what I've read here & in the youtube comments, the anticipation has died down with the release of the demo & some are a bit unhappy with it.
Does it play out like a typical GTA style game? Missions, side missions, constantly running into new characters?

Doesn't seem to bad to me. I probably skip so many good titles by sticking to what I like & never venturing into games I know little about.

Nope, nothing like GTA/RDR at all. The world is open but there is nothing to do it in it, no side missions, random encounters etc. It's just there as a backdrop to the story. The story is supposedly only 10 -12 hours too so it's pretty much a typical linear action game but set in an open world, if that makes sense

I just played the demo on PS3 and although the game has nice style I was dissapointed in the technical issues. The screen tearing was the worst for me, every time you turn the screen around it gets very choppy etc. Also the jaggies were a real eyesore. I thought Red Dead had bad jaggies but this has taken it to a whole new level. I'm still going to get it because I love the setting and gameplay but I hope they can clean up those issues before it's released

Mafia 2 reviews are out. 7.0 and 8.0 respectively from IGN US and AU.

With the real linear nature of the open world, I think this might have to be one to wait for unfortunately.

IGN US REVIEW - MAFIA II

Closing Comments

Mafia II is an interesting mobster tale with some great voice acting and cool cutscenes; if you have a “made man” itch, feel free to scratch it here, but be prepared for a pretty standard third-person shooter in the gameplay department. The “take cover, kill everyone, do it again” mechanic didn’t wow me, but it didn’t let me down either.
Mafia II is a solid little game that’ll give you a fun ride – just don’t expect the world.

7.0 Presentation
The story is interesting, and the chapters make it feel like you’re getting stuff done, but the pacing is a problem and the world – while vibrant – can feel rather empty.

7.5 Graphics
The lip syncing isn’t that hot, you’ll see framerate dips, and characters can seem wooden, but the world looks good and there’s a lot of detail.

8.5 Sound
The voice work and actual music from the time are great.

7.0 Gameplay
With a couple cool exceptions – lock picking, being a window washer, etc. -- this is a run of the mill third-person shooter. Nothing that’ll light your hair on fire with excitement.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
My first playthrough took just a bit more than 10 hours, but there are the Playboy centerfolds and wanted posters to double back for.

IGN AU REVIEW - MAFIA II

Closing Comments

Mafia II is not a title that pushes gameplay boundaries. Instead, it offers up a familiar third person shooter experience that’s solid but not hugely exciting, with decent vehicle-based gameplay; all of which plays out across an entirely linear set of missions. While I can appreciate that 2K Czech wanted to tell its story and not let players get distracted by side-missions and the like, I can’t help but think boundaries needed to be pushed somewhere, whether through genre-leading shooter gameplay or by having a branching main story.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. What we have instead is a deeply flawed game, where the story is the highlight - and far more engaging than most. I certainly enjoyed my 11-12 hours with Mafia II, and those looking for an authentic-feeling mob tale should definitely check it out. This one is more than the sum of its parts.

8.5 Presentation
Memorable character designs and an authentic feeling setting. Not a very interactive world though.

8.5 Graphics
Polished cutscenes, great looking city, varied mission environments.

9.0 Sound
Excellent voice acting. Some cool music from the period too, but a relatively limited tracklist so you’ll hear the same songs over and over. Good use of orchestral music at signature moments.

7.0 Gameplay
Solid but uninspired third person shooter action, decent vehicle handling, cops and enemies can be a little too perceptive. LOVE the vehicle speed limiter function as a way to avoid police attention.

7.0 Lasting Appeal
You’ll play through it once, but that’s it. No branching paths, while the collectables (Playboys and Wanted posters) won’t be enough to have you scouring the city.

OVERALL 8.0
