Last night on Grumpy Old Men Bluey McKenna was on. He was asked the best player he played with and he said Chris Mainwaring. This is a big rap considering the quality of players he played with. He said he was the most consistent over a long period with one flat spot of about 4/5 weeks. He also said players like Kemp were more skilful but put in more average games.

For you posters who have watched the Eagles from day one do you believe Mainwaring to be your best plyer ever. Also with Judd wearing number 3 as Mainwaring did this may become one of the clubs most famous numbers.

Mainy was consistent, granted.

He had a huge heart.

His disposal skills by foot over 40-50m let him down badly, which is why, IMO, he's a rung below Kemp / McKenna / Jako / Matera etc...

Mainy's kicking was sometimes a little suspect but for consistency and work rate he was certainly up there. Kemp for mine though.

A guy who always gets left out of best Eagle list is Peter Sumich. Kicked a lot of goals and was always a good focus point in the forward line. And his kicking wasn't as bad as what it is mad out as.

Most importantly he was very good in finals.

He wouldn't be my best Eagle but he would be in the top 5.

Sad thing was Mainy was playing near career best footy in 1996 and this came to a halt when he was injured in 97 and the rest was history, put in a few gutsy performances that he earned before retiring after a coming of age belting from brisbane, was very consistent in his work rate but Matera and Jako the best with Kemp, McKenna and Cousins not far behind

Mainy was my favourite when I was growing up. He's definitely one of their best, and always tried his guts out.
Of the best former Eagles, I'd rate Peter Matera and Glen Jakovich as the best.
Cousins and Judd will probably end their careers above those two, as long as they can pick up a flag.

Was always a huge Suma fan. Unfortunatly a couple of ordinary years towards the end of his career have stuck in peoples minds when they remember him, rather then the great years.

Man some people have some short memories.

Jakovich was the best defender in the compeitition for a 4-year period.

He was an absolute giant of the game and was the only man who could shut down Carey.

I reckon it's a two-horse race between Jako and Matera and my nod would go to Jako. Seriously, this guy at his peak was better than any other WC player. I'd say that in that window, Jako was more important to our team than Cousins and Judd are currently.

Kemp and mainy were great midfielders, but they weren't match-winners in the same way Jako and Matera were.

There was a thing in The West about the Eagle's best players.

Here are the panel's top 5.
BRAD HARDIE
1. Peter Matera
2. Ben Cousins
3. Glen Jakovich
4. Dean Kemp
5. Peter Sumich

KEN JUDGE
1. Ben Cousins
2. Peter Matera
3. Dean Kemp
4. Glen Jakovich
5. Guy McKenna

MICHAEL THOMSON:
1. Chris Judd
2. Peter Matera
3. Glen Jakovich
4. Ben Cousins
5. Dean Kemp

BEN ALLAN:
1. Dean Kemp
2. Chris Mainwaring
3. Guy McKenna
4. Glen Jakovich
5. Chris Judd

ADRIAN BARICH:
1. Peter Matera
2. Glen Jakovich
3. Ben Cousins
4. Dean Kemp
5. Chris Judd

Michael Thomson putting Judd at No.1 was weird. Maybe at the end of his career but not yet.

Have to concur with you there and go even further....

Jako would be vying for the greatest CHB of all time.

His dominance at CHB was so great and he was so absolutely impassable, that the opposition just shrugged their shoulders and accpeted they had no chance of beating him. They then proceeded to employ a dummy CHF (or a defensive tall to tag him) that would lead Jako to the midfield Flanks. The CHF's sole mission was to have no possessions and keep Jako to a minimum as well.

Jako would wake up to the tactics and just trundle off down to CHB with no opponent, until he utterly destroyed the Forwards, and then the opposition coach had no option but to man up on Jako again.

I have not seen anyone close to being as dominating as Jako was at CHB, in 20 years of watching the game.

Lets remember, Carey at the height of his powers detroyed all before him. The exception was Jako. Even when Carey had the better of Jako on a particular day, he never "destroyed the Eagles".

I can see Kerr dislodging Mainwaring in the top 5 if Kerr keeps having a few more years like this one.

At the end of the week he could be a premiership, brownlow and norm smith medallist and in my opinion, along with matera, the most unique player to play at the eagles. he's a big game player, been the eagles best in virtually every final he's played in. i probably wouldn't have him #1 yet, but by the end of the week i'd think about it.

1. matera.
2. judd.
3. jakovich.
4. cousins.
5. mckenna.

Judd still needs a few more years under his belt to get that high, even if in the GF he got 40 possesions, 15 clearances, 6 goals a Norm Smith Medal etc...

Mainy was a great player over many years but doesn't crack the top 5 at the Eagles for me.

Reckon Peter Matera made Ben Allan look like a monkey a few too many times on the field?

God he writes some crap.

Dennis Commetti once told me that Cwis Mainwawing used to trip the light fantastic on the wing, then, his style of disposal, ambitious at best, and only he and fatty lamb could boast such disposal skill.

Hey what about Cummings he got a Norm Smith his first year :D

I think your all forgetting about the one most important person in the club.
Woosha.

1.Matera
2.Jakovich
3.Kemp
4.Worsfold
5.Mainwaring

Judd and Cousins just miss out, havent done enough just yet but Saturday might change it a little. Theres alot of others that will be putting up thier hand for this top 5 depending on the outcome of the next few years.
Wirra and Cox could still be here in 7 years. :)
