correct me if I'm wrong, but this time last year, wasn't Natanui only 195cm and Watts 193cm?

Updated figures are publicised after draft camp, so I don't think he should be written off until then.

That said, I still would not want to give up anything higher than our 3rd round pick for him.

Not trolling, but Naita has better speed, better skills (handballs shown in AFL, hasn't had confidence to kick yet, but if you've seen him play at WAFL you'll see why), better vision, better poise, and he is taller.

He looks good because he's taller than everyone else.

He's only 195cm. That's shorter than Watts IIRC.

At that height he can only play as a forward.

Why do you want him?

Because the taller the player is, the better he is, & talls can only play as forwards. Sure...

You can't compare two players when one has already played 10 games at AFL level, while the only vision we have of the other is a four minute video. Come back when Daw has played a game before deciding Naitanui is better than him.

Ah, the point Lewigie was making is that at Daw's height, there is no way he will end up being a ruckman at AFL level, whereas Naitanui was 199cm when drafted and is now 201cm. Majak Daw plays ruck but if drafted, will not end up there and his average stats are actually quite poor compared to other draftees.

Only reason he's being compared to Naitanui is because he's black and plays a bit of ruck, however he struggles to get into his TAC side.

Well I have to disagree. Jeff White was 195cm, & he held down the role pretty well for someone who had a big height disadvantage. Daw has the legs & the leap to play Ruck, so don't dismiss him straight away, he could potentially play as a pinch-hitter with the right training. His chances of being drafted are slim anyway, since I agree his stats aren't all that good.

Someone's a great video editor, and it sure doesn't take much media coverage to overrate a kid. ;)

193cm, 84kg.

So not a ruckman past U/18s, could only become a forward.

He averages (at TAC level) about 4 kicks at ~30% efficiency, 4 handballs at ~80% efficiency and despite the impressive marking in the highlight reel, averages about 2 marks a game of which less than 1 are contested. Kicked one goal in his first ten games this year and then kicked 5 in a match a couple of weeks ago, and then kicked 1 and 2 respectively since.

Rookie pick you would have to think.

His stats don't look impressive, but he struggled with form i believe at the start of the year, but if you look at his past 4 matches, he has poled in the best 3 times (2nd twice and 3rd once). indicating that despite his "poor" stats over the entire season, his past 4 matches have been very impressive. He has been playing the game for only 4 years i think now, so it is very hard for him to play consitently good football. With the talent that he does possess, and has shown in spurts on many occasions(particually in the past 4 matches) i believe that many clubs will see this, and i wouldn't be surprised to see him go as high as 2nd round draft pick

Yeh dont get too hung up on the stats - I think that was also a question mark with Nick Nat. He was never getting really high numbers.

And I do think there are similarities other than them both being black as mentioned earlier. He has a very strong body, amazing vertical leap and pace for his height, and once his ruck work is done, he loves staying involved with strong tackling.

All that said, I still think rookie list but with GC17 having the first 4 or 5 rookie picks someone might give him a chance with a late pick in the draft.

But White's best years were far and away before the introduction of the second circle, as that restricted his ability to run and leap. The shorter ruckman are becoming a dinosaur in the game (especially in the centre bounces) as giants like Sandilands, Cox, and Max Bailey (kid will be good if he can duct-tape himself together for 5 minutes) have such an advantage.

On Daw, I like him, later pick, he doesn't look as good as Natanui, but I think he's worth a punt late in the draft.

Maybe, I would argue that shorter, mobile ruckmen are becoming more popular as mobility around the ground is seen to be just as crucial.

Essendon got plenty out of Paddy Ryder (197cm) during this year. Mitch Clark (198cm) did his job for Brisbane. Andreas Everitt (193cm) played very well in Round 22 and may come in to the Bulldogs team this week at the expense of a less mobile ruck option. I think we're slowly going away from the giants - a few years ago every centimetre of height mattered.

His athleticism would give him massive help with rucking and based on what I saw of him on futurestars on the weekend, I'd grab him as a rookie. Which is nothing to base a pick on, but I like the kid. Plus, I like good stories about dudes leaving places and then playing footy.
