There were a few stupid frees and weird things happen.

Why the hell Hall was allowed to have another go after playing on is classic Goldspank.

I was seated close to where that incident took place and interestingly Hall's kick went through for a goal untouched. Goldspink made him have another kick and he didn't score.

Happy to own up to errors. The most recent was only about 3 years ago.:)
That reminds me of Goldspink's press conference for his 350th game a few weeks back. He said something like "I've made my share of mistakes...although the last one was in about 1998." delivered in a deapan style. Unfortunately for Goldy, noone at the press conference even grinned at that. :D

Still that game could have gone either way the frees were fairly even and Judd got an easy goal from a fumble in the goal square (uncharacteristic of sydney) and Hall missed two he usually would claim so could have been an 16-20 point win for the swans as well if fortunes went the other way.

You're pretty close to the mark.

The pub was going off re; free kicks but as pissed as I was I still recall during the 3rd quarter thinking please for **** sake stop giving soft bull**** free kicks in the forward 50. I have a vague memory of the commemtators touching on it as well ( but that's pretty hazy).

Anyway I'm obviously happy with the result but most apparent neutrals here seem to agree the umpires had an influence on the game and that says something in itself .

Umpires are supposed to adjudicate and not have an exterior influence on a game. Soft or incorrect free kicks in forward 50s resulting in direct shots at goal (which were missed thank ****) simply isn't good enough.

Yes Sydney fought back bravely (did I mention the pub was going off) but I think when the umpires and their boss go back over this game the frees paid to certain Syney forwards inside 50 will come under some extra scrutiny.

Not well umpired but thank **** we still got there.

Was that free against Doyle at the centre bounce where he started off inside the outer circle, the first time thats been paid all year?
I've certainly never seen it pinged before.
I agree it was there. Ive paused through it. But tiggy touchwood.

Agree Macpie- that is why it would have been a disgrace if the Swans got up. I know the Swans players were shattered and all but really, they did not deserve to get that close. The umpires particularly in the 3rd quarter did everything they could to get them over the line.
Although i don't wanna sound like a bitch i prolly will. The umpiring was crap and if we'd lost and then i'd complained people would tell me i was stupid and the swans deserved it.

I started timing the 5 minute warning and it went out till 8 and a half minutes.

Thats because of the amount of ball ups and throw ins etc in the last 5 minuets.
The quarter went as long as it should have.

The umpires were fine. People need to realise that a game of footy will have good and bad decisions both ways. It was all part of the game. Just enjoy the win.

Technically that decision was wrong as Kennely genuinely fumbled the ball and then hit it free. But from the umpires position you can clearly see why he thought Kennely put the ball on the ground and then hit it free, which would be a free kick. On the other hand there was the incident when Judd got the clearance in the midfield about a minute later, to have the ball knocked out of his hands regain the ball again and handball it free, only to be pinged for dropping the ball from the ball being knocked out of his hands. The same thing happened in this case as well, as the umpires view was restricted.

Yes m8...the Judd one was silly too....but Cousins got a goal from his...right in front.

The umpires made some of the dumbest calls of the season for both sides.

I reckon they choked more than the players....whistle happy prix trying to be best on ground again.

lesson #456374 for the umps for the 6457356th time....

IF YOU ARE IN THE SLIGHTEST DOUBT WHATSOEVER DONT BLOW THAT FARRRRKIN WHISTLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!...LET IT FLOWWWWWW !!!!

I timed it too. I got to 4min, 56 seconds. Pretty damn close, considering how many stoppages (25+) in the last five minutes.

As a neutral, (slight eagles bias with Chicky) i thought it was a game that was relatively well umpired, yes there were a couple of 'huh? ' decisions but for the most part i didn't think they had too great an influence. It's easily the best game I've seen Goldspink umpire, he only interrupted the show once or twice...maybe the bump to the 'head' knocked some sense into him?

btw, when Hall was made to kick twice, he ran around (play on), ump didn't call but Glass ran over mark, Hall appealed to ump, who called Glass back, then Barry kicked for goal (through the middle, watch the crowd), before being called back. I actually thought that was a good decision, as Hall took advantage of Glass being distracted by the umpire. Mind you, this is often used to the advantage with tight shots (farmer/didak of late).

And how about the sterotypical Chick moment to win the game!!!

Smother, gather, handball, shepard. The ultimate team player.

Yeah nice try....maybe you shoulda watched the game.

They released a video of what constitutes holding the ball at the start of the season and made all the coach's watch it and show it to the players.

In that video was a "this is" and "this isnt" section.

Under the "this isnt" section was Kennelly's but the whistle still went.

Slipped over and dropped it without being tackled....then to make it worse he knocked it away immediately...exactly what they ask u to do.

Unfortunately u'll find i'm 100% correct and that it was a disgraceful gift in front of goals.

And to think that after all the whinging about so called favoritism to Hall that he actually shoulda had a goal is pathetic.

Sounding more and more like we were ROBBED !!! :D

I demand a rematch !:D

I'm not bitter about a 1pt loss at all !!! :D

The holding the ball free kick against Kennelly was correct. One of the easiest decisions in the game. I cannot believe anyone would complain about that one.

It was karma - no jigs this year! And no more screaming at a member of an opposing team's cheer squad! :D

You had about 4 unjustified free kicks inside your forward 50 in the first quarter and yet try to claim the umpires favoured WCE in that quarter.

You have no clue.

Spot on - If the Swans had kicked straight those gifts in the firsrt qr would be receiving more prominance.

Kennelly's decision to try to baulk Cousins was the funniest moment of the match and got what it deserved

you guys are unbelievable!!! the umpiring wasn't bad at all. wc were clearly the MUCH better side in the first half giving them a decent lead and the swans fired in the second half which earnt them a come back.

END. OF. STORY!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep the personal stuff for TLC or PM's

Watch the game again, without the red and white glasses on. I have, and there were at least 3 decisions that were woefully and glaringly wrong.

And, I can only imagine what Fred has edited from your post.

of course but if it was the other way around, you would've had reason to scream IMO. Goldspink should not umpire a final again!

funny thing this umpiring thing. 124 games later or there abouts people still are complaining about them. i thought they umpired to their true ability. some good decisions some bad BUT for most of the game i thought they were unnoticed. the 2 teams show cased a great game of AFL footy. we all know the rules seem to be different come the grand final but i dont think the umps won it for the eagles or lost it for the swans. great way to finish off the year:)

I think the 2006 grand final suffered from last year's GF in that the umpring in the 2005 GF was exceptional -- you hardly ever noticed the umps in that one, which is how it should be.

I didn't realise there was another "Kick a dog while he's down" thread.

Perhaps this one should be merged with the "Lucky win" thread.

The umpiring this weekend was terrible, or was it?

We all know how badly our friend Alex was Sydney to succeed in the AFL. And there arent many rugby fans from NSW who want Storm to have any success.

It makes me shudder to think Darren Goldspink is now the senior umpire - the Horror, the Horror!!!

Agreed. Thought he was very poor on Saturday. Otherwise he's usually very good.
