Awesome show of faith in where the club is going. No body would extend a contract that doesnt even end for 2 more years unless they were extremely happy with how things are going. Any chance we changed up his contract to frontload it a bit more this year while we can use the extra 5%?

Love this kid, hope weve already got plans in place (and im sure we will) for when his next contract is due and he'll probably be in the top few players in the game.

Out of interest, who knows a bit about how contract extensions work?

Are the terms renegotiated from now until the end of the new period, or is the current contract honoured until the end of the initial agreement and then the extension takes over, etc? I realise that there is probably a lot of possibilities and it will depend on the interests of the player and club in each situation, but just wondering if there is a usual way that it plays out.

You'd revisit the entirety of the contract (tear up the old contract and replace with the new) So, terms of 2016, 2017 would have been renegotiated.

Nope, free agency requires 8 years of service. For Bontempelli, that would be at the end of 2021

7 years or less only applies to delisted free agents.

Sorry to bump this back up again but I was literally jumping on the couch high-fiving my sister when I saw this news the other night. Absolutely stoked, and hope he stays for another 10 years after this contact!
Along with String by far my favourite player, and a lot of us might find this hard to believe but I reckon he's still pretty underrated externally.
