The start of a new era
AFL Club
Essendon
What has your impression been of him this year.

I've always rated him, but he has actually surprised me how well he has played this year.

He deserves a lot of credit for how hard he has worked and is now so versatile, hardly any job would be beyond him.

If only we could have 3 or 4 of him

He has been a slowly maturing player, and I mean that in a positive way.

Hopefully he can keep play consistently at this level for another 4 to 5 years.

Ive always been a massive fan of Spike's, i think hes one of the most under rated players in the AFL. Does his job every week in shutting down a big name player and still finds plenty of the footy himself and uses it brilliantly too, great disposal and great over head mark and goal sense too!

I think though it is Spikes work ethic and determination that wins me over though because he has always been a player who gives 110% every week.

Just throwing this one out there, does anyone reckon he is a chance to be a future captain? I think Spikes got all the attributes!

I agree entirely. McVeigh's been terrific this year and hasn't really had a down match, even when we've been losing. An All-Australina jumper certainly doesn't look beyond at this stage. Has taken his agme to another level.

Is he future captaincy material? I think if Mark keeps up the example he's setting at the moment, definately.

He is a very important player, he plays a number or rolls so well:

  • Small defender
  • Tagging midfielder
  • Ball winning midfielder
  • Small forward
During his career he has performed all those roles and starred at each.

He is the sort of flexible player that is integral to succesfull teams to adapt to various opponents.

Been great this year and filled a number of roles, very dangerous when up forward as can win his own ball, this is where I think he will play a lot more when our defenders come back, NLM, Nash etc..

definately can see him as a future captain, would actually like to see it to, his the kind of bloke i would want as the leader of the club, tough but smart and a bloody hard worker...

ideally i would want him to play a tagging role in the midfeild but in doing so to make his man accountable, exactly what he did to luke power in the game saturday, kept him quiet and starred himself..

we have slatts and MJ down back now so i dont see the need to play him back there, his disposal is of much better use in the midfeld and pushing forward..

Best year of his career by far. Hope he continues in this form. I liked the look of him up forward too. If he can drag his opponent there, like he did with Power who had absolutely no clue, he can really damage opposition teams.
