If you're talking about 2006, which is the only time his job faced any real scrutiny, we were the ones who showed the loyalty by allowing him to serve out his contract. We even tried to make life easier for him by hiring extra support such as Neil Balme. How terrible of us
But like I said, most of us are thanking him. There's only a select few who are upset.

Bomber as a coach is overrated.
The facts are that Geelong's dominance came along with the rise of the Gaz Jnr. He has left and Bomber can see the hard days before Gaz are coming back to Geelong. So he did the sensible thing and left.
Geelong will go back to their rightfull place as a nothing club on the highway out of Melbourne.

Mark Thompson seems like a pretty shit bloke to me, but I don't think Hirdy is getting him for his amazing integrity or anything. I would imagine Hirdy sold the thing to Bomber on the basis of them being fellow Essendon greats and needing to get together and get the Essendon of old back.
Bomber would of course, almost certainly not give a shit himself, but would have come because he can look like a hero rebuilding a club with Hirdy, whilst also avoid the inevitable down turn Geelong will have.
I love Hird and I can see that he will learn some invaluable stuff from Thompsons experience, but IMO I think it was a bad move. Hird needed to make mistakes and learn his own way, and if he did I would be certain he would win a flag with them. With Thompson there Hird will almost certainly hinder his own development in the 'lead role', and I think it actually shows a bit of self doubt on Hird's behalf. Self doubt is the enemy of great leaders and I will look with interest at what occurs at Essendon in the future. I still think Hird will succeed because he is a champion but I think the Thompson move is not necessarily a good one.

AFL is not loyal no, but when someone yaps on about how other people should be loyal (and sours a relationship) you expect that person to be loyal too. You don't leave one very stressful job citing burn out only to take up another very stressful job. (think it will be easy, with all the media attention on the Bombers to actually perform, and on his move etc?) to me he is also making light of mental health all of course in the month of Movember
