RICHMOND premiership player Marlion Pickett has been granted bail by a Perth magistrate after being charged over a string of alleged burglaries in which currency was stolen from safes.

Police remanded Pickett in custody on Sunday - a day after he played in the Tigers' 15-point win over Fremantle at Optus Stadium - alleging he was involved in commercial burglaries between December and January.

The 31-year-old appeared in the dock in Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, wearing a black sweatshirt.

He only spoke to confirm his name and was not required to enter pleas.

A police prosecutor told the court the alleged offending by Pickett and others involved a series of commercial burglaries resulting in the theft of more than $380,000 in Australian and foreign currencies from within safes.

Pickett is facing 12 charges including four counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of stealing and three counts of criminal damage.

Prosecutors opposed bail, saying there was a risk Pickett would reoffend if he was released.

Pickett's lawyer David Manera said the prosecution case rested largely on allegations deposits were made into his bank account by his co-offenders and that a camper-van rented in his name was driven interstate by the other men.

Magistrate Erin O'Donnell said the allegations were serious but she was confident Pickett did not present a significant flight risk.

She granted bail on the condition Pickett resides at his address in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir, reports weekly to a local police station, does not interact with his alleged co-offenders and provides a $50,000 personal surety.

A major role in funding it by the looks of it. Question is did he knowingly fund it or has he trusted the wrong people with some money?

I just can’t imagine the guy who buys all the tools, the vehicle for laundering the cash and even the clothes they wear makes out with only 4% of the take. Especially doesn’t make any sense to risk the money he makes on that amount of return
Why would you question the purchase of five balaclavas?

Just found out about this and read this thread.

I won't say too much about police and racism. Obviously this appears to have been actual robberies to which the brother-in-law has pleaded guilty. So it's not that anyone is suggesting that the cops made it all up. But it would be entirely normal for them to want to ping Marlion for this on flimsy evidence because they're used to being able to get away with it when they charge a Nungar.

It seems to be clear from what the defence lawyer has said that the cop evidence is to do with the $15,000 going into his bank account and the purchase/hire of the camper van and clothes. What is a bit strange is the fact that they haven't charged him with aiding and abetting but with the actual burglaries. The only evidence presented for this mentioned is his phone being "pinged" near one of the crimes, which is pretty flimsy. People here have speculated that there may be other evidence, but if there was it would have surely been brought up to deny him bail.

Let's be hoping that he has the best legal defence and, as a consequence, the WA courts can't get away with their usual miscarriage of justice.

The thing that just doesn't sit with me is the idea that he would risk ruing his AFL career for $15,000.

Cleary said Gale will hold a presser tommorow, could go either way in regards to playing. Is the AFL involved in some capacity, do they want it to overshadow trent 300th, will the sponsors be ok if he plays etc equally the club said they will support him and his fmaily and the players would likely be on board with him playing and galvanise the group in a way
Gut feel is they'll give him the week off so they're not overshadowing Cotch's 300th. Already spent a night in jail so his recovery is somewhat compromised.

Did he actually buy balaclavas or did he give them money and then they bought balaclavas?
remember in the 80 campaigners used to wear balaclavas cos it was cold

Agree to a point but one of the other parties was his brother in law who has pleaded guilty

In Picketts mind he could of been just doing a favour for family and it wasn’t about him profiting, pressure from family can make people do crazy things
Australians throughout South East Asia are known as ATM's. People who have disposable income and are good financial sponsors. Australians set up joint accounts for receipt of financial assistance. They buy poorer people gifts including holidays, phones and clothes. They give and loan money.

The case to be proven is that firstly Pickett had knowledge of the transactions, he might not monitor the account at all. It might be an account for his wife's family to use. Then,

That Pickett has knowledge of the crime and that proceeds of the crime were received by him. That he knowingly profited from the crime.

The club would have supporters who are Queen's Councils and Barristers who'd represent him for free. An old family friend was a QC and represented the Hawks free of charge when they needed him.

Liam Jurrah's QC bill would've been hundreds of thousands $$ if it wasn't the same thing for when he was machete man. Great return on investment that ended up being. I'd like to hope Pickett is innocent and he gets to 100 but watching that doco on him where he said something like life was too stressful so he reoffended so he could go back to the comfort of jail has me questioning things?
