RICHMOND premiership player Marlion Pickett has been granted bail by a Perth magistrate after being charged over a string of alleged burglaries in which currency was stolen from safes.

Police remanded Pickett in custody on Sunday - a day after he played in the Tigers' 15-point win over Fremantle at Optus Stadium - alleging he was involved in commercial burglaries between December and January.

The 31-year-old appeared in the dock in Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, wearing a black sweatshirt.

He only spoke to confirm his name and was not required to enter pleas.

A police prosecutor told the court the alleged offending by Pickett and others involved a series of commercial burglaries resulting in the theft of more than $380,000 in Australian and foreign currencies from within safes.

Pickett is facing 12 charges including four counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of stealing and three counts of criminal damage.

Prosecutors opposed bail, saying there was a risk Pickett would reoffend if he was released.

Pickett's lawyer David Manera said the prosecution case rested largely on allegations deposits were made into his bank account by his co-offenders and that a camper-van rented in his name was driven interstate by the other men.

Magistrate Erin O'Donnell said the allegations were serious but she was confident Pickett did not present a significant flight risk.

She granted bail on the condition Pickett resides at his address in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir, reports weekly to a local police station, does not interact with his alleged co-offenders and provides a $50,000 personal surety.

Not sure he can play but by the same token that sort gives off the vibe that we don’t believe him

If it wasn’t for the fact that it’s Cotch’s 300th you’d maybe back him in depending on what he’s saying inside the club

Maybe they let Cotch decide? I’m really not sure

Nope read earlier as the seven points for aggravated burglary were put up earlier. There were two points where you can be charged for it and not be at the scene. So if someone has thrown him under a bus he can still be cleared. Don’t assume anything yet as if what you’re saying is right there’s no way he would’ve been granted bail.
That's not the case TI. Those point are more to do with him being there with others, for example if 3-4 offenders were present, or there were innocent parties there became victims of the crime as a result.

If he wasn't there at all, he'd like have been charged with conspiracy and/or accessory before/after the fact because of the van hire, purchasing of tools/clothing and receiving funds from the crime.

That’s what I meant as I don’t believe he was present as no dna was found at the scene. He could have only acted away from the scene initially. I’m just hoping he gave the money as a gift or loan totally unaware for its purposes. It just depends on his BIL statement now and others that were involved. A case of he said , she said could be the scenario eventuating here. Has he even been charged with Aiding and abetting?

They still have to prove Pickett was part of the burgs. It's not illegal to buy clothes, tools or to rent a van. If there's CCTV footage of him at the burg premises he's farked.
CCTV footage of hooded burglars doesn't mean it's Marlion...just needs a good lawyer and CCTV footage experts to raise doubt it was Marlion...

Who knows what is happening in Marlion's personal life. Cheap as chips contract, Melbourne cost of living issues.... we just don't know. Hopefully he's cleared but I guess we also need to be ready to accept the other possibility.

This would depend on how exactly Pickett pleads - and where he claims he was at the time(s) of the offences (as there were 3 of them over 4 - 5 weeks)

He would need to provide an alibi of where he was, "asleep in bed on the other side of town" etc...

Lot's to play out.

The thing I really am struggling with is this is the same bloke who has changed the way he plays footy in terms of is bumping and tackling etc , to survive in a game that has saved his life and given his family everything.
That’s a lot of effort, duty of care and commitment showing me just how much it means to him rather than just going out levelling blokes like he once did.
Same bloke who gave up grog and so on.

And then in the next breath I’m contemplating him throwing all that away for * all.
Makes me really think that it’s just something very naive on his behalf that’s taken place but nonetheless it’s going to undo all his hard work sadly.
Not fcuk all to Marlion though...not knowing anything about the case and Marlion's life...I would say/guess that family ties plays a big part in his life(like everybody else!)a very big part...maybe an unbreakable part...who is to know?! Only Marlion would know...

Not sure on aiding and abetting charge.

On a more positive note...think of the movie rights Marlion could possibly make...
One of the great stories of footy...Marlion his life!
Then if he does make it to 100 games for RFC...F/S plays for Tigers!
Another possible movie...Marlion his legacy!

I've never heard of an innocent person pleading guilty. People plead guilty to a lesser charge to lower their jail time but like you say who would plead guilty if you are 100% innocent?
Nope You can plead guilty to charges if you're not guilty and still have no criminal record. It's called a Diversion Order and you can apply for one or Police can recommend it to the Magistrate. It's based on your previous criminal history and the weight of the crime. It saves high legal costs as you're generally expected to pay a small fee to an emergency service with a course relating to your crime. I've notched up two already as it was easier to pay the fines totalling $500 than hire a lawyer.
