Whatever.. Graeme Richmond pulled the club out of a 22 year flag drought and set it up for a 5 flag era. Hard to win back then too.

He put together an insane playing list. Billy Barrott is the best footballer I've seen. Royce Hart took on Captaincy and was the best CHF & the best No. 4.
I don't think you can compare the eras, both top of the tree in their own time

That takes balls no matter how you slice it 🤣

Sorry let me finish laughing full time pros like Kamdyn McIntosh, Jack Graham running 15kms a game, sadly does not equate to them being good footballers at all.

Let alone better than Bourke, Barrott, Clay or Hart.

Fact 2: 22 year drought broken by G Richmond list, Hafey's coaching and produced 5 flags. 5>3.

Comparing players from different eras is a waste of time.

The game is umpired differently, and the one-on-one specialists from earlier eras would be overwhelmed by the structure and role-playing teams of today, just as the role-players of today would be completely out of their depth in one-on-one contests with yesterday’s champions.

How the champions of each era would fit into teams from different eras is another question, and honestly, it’s not a question that interests me. It’s like arguing about how many angels fit on the head of a pin.

76.

I thought everyone knew that.

tora tora tora, you are 100% wrong about Hafey era stars being better than the Dimmasty stars.

VFL players: Played in a state league without equalisation measures and were amateur or semi-pro.

AFL players: Played/Play in a national league with equalisation measures and are professionals.

There is no comparison between them. Saying otherwise is complete fantasy and illogical.
Late 60s, early 70s Graeme Richmond with maybe one helper recruited a dynasty team from the local suburb, zone, in our case Nathalia. Plus Ricardson & Hart from Tasmania, Rioli, Balme Brown from WA. Southern NSW & SA were areas producing footballers.

VFL was state league in name sure but had the challanges and opportunities of the national comp.
Also had to deal with rubbish like Aylett coming up with 10 years FA rule which kind've gifted North a few flags.

For Richmond, or any club to negotiate that was not a walk up 5 flag dynasty. Saints win one then disappear. Carlton were strong back in those days. Dogs, Hawthorn, Essendon, Collingwood weren't winning flags, Geelong were in the 67 GF.

18 club era AFL players are professionals. What does that mean? Kamdyn is a carpenter still has time to go round doing funny reno videos.
Other players are doing fork lift driving courses. TY Vickery studied Law degrees, one player in the current VFL team 2 years into a medical degree. Sam Davidson.

Vlas is building a house, Cotch & Caddy went into the gym business late career. TY Zantuck ran a cleaning business.

Running is more important no doubt. My beef, the campaigners can't really play footy. Full time pro Sampson Ryan can't mark a football but earns 3 year contract extension. Taranto & McIntosh can barely kick one. VC medallist Jayden Short dogging marking contests. Hello Thomson Dow
The team regularly runs 280kms in a game ~ kicks 7 goals.

Standard of football fell away petty savagely with the long injury list. Heady days ahead with a 19th team coming in
Heady ****ing days

People need to realise just because that stuff happened doesn’t mean these guys were “tougher” if you instructed todays players to knock the shit out of other players it would look worse than that, players would die.
You said Dusty would monster em.

I disputed that. I hold my positition. Reflecting on how Francis Bourke played.

Rioli wasn't part of the dynasty. He arrived in 1982.

In fact recruiting him was one of the catalysts in the club imploding and turning to shit.

the point was the VFL was building lists from WA. (& SA, TAS, Sthn NSW)
Oh yeah. From earlier than us doing it too. When did Farmer go to Geelong? '62 or '63? I think they also got Denis Marshall from WA too didn't they?

I'll go my metamucil when Martin stops being referred to as the greatest Richmond player ever. In the greatest ever era of fast, fit fantastic football.

He is at least the greatest in the last 40 years.

And that's across the entire comp too.

A few of em ran pubs too.
Roberts, Northey. We were kicked out of one of Northey's pubs, over exuberent after a basketball win. His MFC coaching days I think. Yeah cos it was Melbourne Footballers working there.
Bourke ran the Tiger Lounge. Punk rock music. across town for me so rarely went to it. Not sure who was bouncer. Players I'm sure.
Had a group of mates that were constantly fighting with the bouncers there. Slam dancing days. I don't blame the pub at all.

I saw Graeme Richmond running, bouncing at the Seaview Ballroom. Small feisty campaigner. Could fight too.
