That time of the week again; A big weekend of footy coming up!!

Dunolly V Newstead - Should be a ripper of a game this Friday night in front of another big crowd hopefully (everyone get along for a look). Not too sure how the timing of the night match during the week will effect either side with guys travelling etc but hopefully its minimal. Newstead started really slowly against a physical Maldon side last weekend before the class of Ramsay and Ford took control. With Dunolly's player losses it will be pretty different side to that which played in the grand final but with Newstead still missing a few should be pretty even. Newstead to come home in the last by 20

Avoca v Rovers - Avoca will be hoping to start the season well and kill off another disappointing September. Have recruited well and lost basically noone so should be regarded as the team to beat for this years flag. Rovers will be hoping Sellars can lift his side this year, and with a few notable losses during the summer they will need him to. Avoca by 40

Trentham V Carisbrook - Not good signs for the saints last week loosing to Creek. A lot of buzz over the summer with some 30 odd recruits bolstering stocks but they will need to find a way to gell pretty quickly. Brook have lost some really good players but have also plucked Ahmatt from Dunolly and Dingo who by all reports is a gun. Expect them to win comfortably this weekend and really threaten to finish top 3

Harcourt v Creek - Creek would have been wrapt with the win on the weekend. The pre season recruiting didn't go exactly to plan but the experience of Peake will no doubt help out the younger Creek onballers. Harcourt have lost a lot of solid senior players over summer, names like McMurtrie, J Smith, D Smith, and the Karmichaels will leave them pretty light on. The Lions should get up, but it may be closer than they'd like.

Battleship was spotted eating a kebab or 2 with a few players at recovery session on sunday. Would love to have him out there friday night, but the money is on a return a little later on in the season.

Whats the holdup and why the sudden change of heart?

In the words of the great Bluey Mcgeown I dont pretend to speak for him, but i believe he still has some work to do on the track with preparation. Just ease into things.

will money get him there to play this year

If money was the priority you'd find him putting in a clearence to natte for example. Enjoyment from the game comes into play at some stage, Loose some $$ to have a kick with some 10 players under the age of 21 and all bar about 2 players under 26.

Some intersting results on the weekend... Great win by the Steaders Friday night in front of a pretty poor turnout (the league would have to be disappointed with it) to beat Dunolly like that; there were no inclusions from the week before so they still have about 5 still to come in from last years grand final including Oxley, Starrit, Barker and Brown!!

I didn't see Sellars or Elliot in the best or goal kickers for Rovers, did they play? Avoca must be firming after their productive off season and a great first up win there??

Trentham looked like they did well against Carisbrook getting that close... Have the Saints improved that much, and / or have the Redbacks dropped off the pace a little also??

Good stuff also for the Creekers to be 2-0 for the first time in quite a while - could be a very long year for Harcourt going by that result too!!

Trentham may be going forward as a Football Club, but our Netballers were fuming when many of them were informed as they arrived at Trentham that the Netball games were called off. Comunication should of been better from both ends but not a good start for the Trentham netballers.

In regards to the footy game, Quite simply Trentham were very good and Credit must go to them, they were at one stage 20 points up. great to see 5 or 6 under 20s playing for Brook, great to get some game time into the future of the club. the Team will only get stronger in the coming weeks with a few inclusions.

in defence to the trentham netballers, yes the court was not finished (the shires fault not theirs) im pretty sure they were expecting to play netball on the courts. and yes trentham did play a much much better brand of footy this week against carisbrook then they did against the creek

So are three of your boys just gonna step aside for these kids even if they are not good enough?

I recon they will be good enough for the 1's but it does push a couple of locals out because they keep saying the 17 of last years side were locals even though there were 9 players cleared into the club at the start of 2009 that played in the GF.
Looks like you only have to be in Dunolly 10 minutes to be a local, different in Newstead I have been here 15 years and still have 5 to go before I am local

Like most other clubs , Dunolly pick the best 22 each week. Is that too hard to understand? The reserves are there for a reason and blokes go up and down between the two regularly. Steader , your stats on clearance percentages at DFC make me concerned for your state of being , Son. :). Maybe get out in the sunshine a bit. Beautiful at the moment.I suppose the recruits from Mildura are really from North Newstead over your way lol. Really , who cares !;)

Good on Dunolly for having a crack... It paid off last year and they may have another couple of decent players from the Tiwi boys. It would be a shame for the "local" players as it is when any team brings in recruits that take spots, but i was pretty impressed with their attack on the ball and man last Friday night regardless of the margin at the end so whoever misses will feel pretty hard done by.

As for the recruiting debate, Newstead had 14 guys play in the premiership that had played at the club since under 12's, and any recruits were all good mates of at least one of those guys before coming over. I think the difference Steader is trying to make is that these guys had some exisiting relationship with the club or someone from it rather than being enticed to fly from interstate on a Friday night and back out the next day mainly for money, only to leave the next year.

Good on them for trying it though, as i'm sure a lot of clubs wished they had done so first.

Good post and you raise good points.

Dunolly had 12 guys that played juniors at the Club in their grand final team. Looking at Carisbrook's flag team in 2008, I would suggest they had 6-8. Not knocking them, but nothing is made mention of the fact that they have recruited from other teams such as Maryborough, Avoca and etc with great success and a lot of those recruits would be considered locals now.

The difference was Dunolly's recruits last year brought headlines and they were a different colour. 2 guys flew in and to me that isn't too different to a lot of people that play in this league from Melbourne who drive down each week and do not train in theory. Another team in the MCDFL did fly a player down but that never made any headlines. Shannon would like to have stayed but employment in Mildura made the Robinvale offer much easier on him with travel and time.

Try telling anyone Shannon Motlop did bad things for the Dunolly Football Club or the MCDFL. He brought people through the gate and added something pretty amazing in the finals. If people can't see the good in guys that high quality in the league then they are small minded.

Dunolly had a crack at something and what was the alternative? The last 6 years had produced 12 wins and a club that was on the brink of extinction. Dunolly has nearly folded before every season from 2003-2008.

2008 (6 wins) and 2009 (13 wins) have produced more wins that the 6 seasons before them and do you think this year's team will slump back to the standard of 2008 and previous? There are still a lot of guys with finals experience and Grand Final experience in that team. They've seen how next level players go about it in Shannon and co.

Nobody makes comment about Talbot's Coach and recruits last year. A few of them seemed to come in and go in the one season. What's the difference? A few of those recruits could have been pretty well paid and were of good quality.

On top of that, Dunolly made a profit which hadn't been done in a decade. Last laugh will always be that we missed the premiership but most things a good footy club should do were completed. Profit, highest membership base on record, finals footy, finals netball, and a certain 2010.

Keep bagging Dunolly but it was a fun year to be around the Club and most would agree to not go down by a 3 figure margin in a year was a nice feeling. The 6 years previous, they were the norm.

The Tiwi guys are not going to be Shannon Motlop style players but it's still something out of the square. People will want to see them, and hopefully they can put in some exciting performances.

Newstead's efforts last year were great and this year it sounds as if they will be a good chance to do it again. And with all those guys that had been there since under 12's, it must be very satisfying. It seems like a great club, great guys and they deserved it in 2009.
