Re: Matt Maguire

I had golden staph many many years ago...got it while living in nth NSW, we were advised by the specialists at the time, to come home to melb. as our weather is not so humid etc..and after months of massive treatments, and because I was pregnant at the time, they were getting nowhere...thats all they could advise..

Between my M.in Law and myself, we boiled everything boilable, wiped every surface with metho and/or peroxide....all old fashioned methods by todays standards, but they worked....it was cleared up in 3wks!....and thats the honest truth...it was stunning to see it clearing up so quickly after so long...the pain was horrendous..

How are all jumpers and socks washed at the club?

Are all lockers inside wiped out with an antiseptic regularly?

Shower rooms cleaned every day with a white king type cleaner?

I have always taken an interest in any staph reports....I have come to the conclussion, the doctors are flying blind...are certainly not conquering this horrible infection..

Just sometimes it doesn't hurt to go back to try some good old fashioned remedies..

Golden Staph really took off when hospitals stop boiling all sheets, garments and utensils..and started using chemicals to clean instead......coincidence??

I think not, is my own opinion..

Re: Matt Maguire

I think I read somewhere that Leuenberger missed 19 weeks due to his staph infection, and lost 12kg.

Hanley on the other hand had a staph infection 3 weeks ago, and played reserves last weekend (was named in the best too I think).

Fingers crossed Goose's recovery is Hanley-esque,

Leuie's would've gotten into the joint, Hanley's wouldn't have. Fingers crossed Goose's is superficial.

Re: Matt Maguire

Problem with Bergs was that he had the surgery on the knee, went home to WA and a week later got sick and they found the infection, so it had gotten pretty bad by that stage. I think they tried flushing out his knee like 3 times with limited success. By the time they actually got it under control a good 2 weeks from his first surgery, he had lost all the muscle he put on over the preseason from being so sick. All that combined gave him a very long recover time. I think the initial injury that Bergs had was maybe a 6-8 week stint out, but he never returned to seniors last year obviously.

If they catch it early and treat it, it can be all good, just like any other kind of infection. Let it fester away for awhile and it can do some serious damage.

Assistant coach Jade Rawlings said they hoped to have Fevola and Maguire back to counter the anticipated return of the Saints superstar."He (Fevola) trained yesterday at a reasonable level so we expect he will train tomorrow and we will then make a judgment on that," Rawlings said. "Matt Maguire will also be tested. They are the main chances."

Maguire has resurrected his career this season and was a great inclusion for the Lions until he was felled by tendonitis in his foot after the round 11 loss to the Kangaroos. He was tested on Tuesday but was unable to prove his fitness.

Re: Matt Maguire

So no Maguire this week? Isn't tuesday a bit early for a test?

Looks like Staker might go to Riewoldt.

Re: Matt Maguire

The Australian

In better news for the Lions, defender Matt Maguire and his former St Kilda teammate Xavier Clarke are scheduled for returns from injury in the state league this weekend.

Re: Matt Maguire

Oh God, the dreaded 2 weeks for a foot injury. Saints fans don't really like those words in the same sentence.

Shame we won't be able to see Goose tonight, don't get to see many Lions games and even less with Matty in them.

Hope he proves his fitness and is back in the side in 2 weeks!

Maguire has a bit more work to do to prove his fitness than Brown, but Voss said he was a good chance of making the trip.

Brendan Fevola's mercy dash

BRISBANE Lions defender Matt Maguire has broken his silence on the staph infection scare that hospitalised him last month.

"I started to feel a bit of pain. I took a couple of (paracetamols) to numb the pain but it didn't really work. It got to about four or five in the morning and I was a little worse for wear so I called the doc and told him I was in a bit of strife. He said to wait until the morning but I said, 'Nah', so he recommended I get to the emergency ward."

"I got myself ready to go to the hospital and I rang a couple of the boys but nobody was awake. I thought to myself, 'Who would be up at this time of the day'? and it hit me that Fevvy was the man. He came and picked me up straight away and took me down to the hospital. I was a little bit worried when they told me it could get in my bloodstream and I could lose a fair few kilos, but once that was ruled out out I was OK," he said.

Match Review Panel

Contact between the Brisbane Lions’ Matt Maguire and the Geelong Cats’ Steve Johnson from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was investigated. The panel conducted an investigation into the contact that was made after the vision available was not conclusive. Based on the evidence received from both parties, the investigation determined the contact was accidental and no further action was taken.

Melbourne's improved and slick movement of the ball caused Voss some angst when he was selecting the team and he said it was the reason that another former Saint, defender Matt Maguire, was overlooked."They have the ability to run the ball quickly and they like to create space for themselves," Voss said.

Not named in the reserves so his fitness must also be of concern.

Players lose faith in panel

AFL player delegate Luke Power yesterday summed up the frustration of the players, condemning the panel's lack of consistency."I think at times they feel they have to follow everything to the letter of the law when every case is different," the Lions midfielder said.

"I harp on about it because I think it was the worst decision ever made but Matt Maguire getting suspended for clashing heads with Jude Bolton during the year . . . people clash heads in games. You don't go out there to knock yourself out."

Defiant

After doing some preseason training with Carlton, Brisbane pulled a surprise when they took him with pick 91 in the national draft. The question mark on him was whether he was too slow for the modern game. The removal of the rod from his leg was expected to help this as it had increased the range of motion in his joints.

In round 1 it was a feel good story when Maguire played his 100th game, 694 days after he had played his 99th. Playing at centre half back, Maguire settled into the defensive structure fairly seamlessly. Any lack of pace was not standing out as a problem with Merrett tending to go to the players providing leads. When the ball was bombed in long Maguire was in his element as he was able to match any player for strength. He also was adept at zoning off his opponent and he took a lot of marks from opposition kicks. In attack he rebounded well, and was probably superior to what Patfull had been in previous years. His foot skills were reliable and he was very good at taking high percentage options.

In round 6 against Sydney, in attempting to spoil a Jude Bolton kick, an accidental clash of heads saw Maguire suffer a depressed fracture of the cheekbone. The damage was only minor but to add insult to injury he was suspended for a week, which Luke Power later described at the worst decision he had seen in his career. During the 2nd quarter of the season, with missing personnel, the defence was under siege, and Maguire was starting to gain some recognition for his efforts in holding things together. If ever an opponent looked like he might have his measure, Maguire had an uncanny knack of winning the next few contests. His endeavour was endearing to the supporters and setting a good example for his team mates.

After missing so much footy in recent years it was expected he may have a few setbacks in his comeback year, and in round 12 he was forced out with tendonitis in his foot. Things could have become much worse as he contracted a staph infection, but it was treated before it reached his bloodstream and was not too serious. He returned in round 16, but like most of his team mates, his post injury form was poor. He missed the last two games with an ankle injury.

The question still remains whether he is the ideal person at centre half back. These days there is a move towards smaller and more mobile players, and Maguire bucks this trend. The Lions looked to be playing too tall this year, and his role will probably be scrutinised. He is likely to still be in Voss’ plans, but if Voss were to any stage be replaced, Maguire could find himself on the outer.

Re: Matt Maguire

It was interesting to watch the grand final with St Kilda having only one player of genuine KPP height in defence (and he's hardly a goliath physically) v Collingwood having 2 geniune talls and guys like Maxwell and O'Brien able to go tall as required.

If we went with the Collingwood model, we could afford to play Goose. The St Kilda model would probably mean picking guys like Patfull, Drummond and Staker in defence.

Re: Matt Maguire

Came to see if anyone posted that GingerGreatness, I really enjoyed that one. Seems a good type and an interesting chat. His GF predictions were pretty poor though :p

Thanks for all the info too Grim, good reads all round. Big fan of the way Goose goes about his footy.

Re: Matt Maguire

This guy is built like a tank! I knew he was big but today saw him up front and he really used his size well in some of the drills. Although I think it was Rocky who bought him down when he tried to run through him at one stage :D
