Retired Matthew 'Goose' Maguire (2009-2015)

One more year? We have to get Goose to 200. :thumbsu:

Might need to work on your maths a bit there, jackess.:p

200 is probably not realistic, IMO.

Against Port I could not for the life of me work out why he retreated back to goal, when Moore was running into 50 to have a shot on goal. No pressure, goal.

I believe Maguire holds the Brisbane Lions record for the most games without a goal, so well done on breaking the duck.:thumbsu:

Last night Maguire kicked his first goal since Round 14, 2006 (St Kilda vs Collingwood).

Presented very nicely a couple of times.

Onya Goose!

Anyone got stats on goal droughts? Over seven years seems a decent gap...

Yep, that record reverts back to Danny Dickfos who played in 43 games for the Brisbane Lions without kicking a goal. Justin Clarke (13* games) is next on the list of our current players that has yet to kick a goal.

Five talking points: Brisbane Lions v St Kilda

4. Goose kicks his first snag in seven years

It was a long time coming, but Matt Maguire made it worth the wait. Not since round 14, 2006 when he was playing for the Saints against Collingwood has the regular full-back kicked a goal at senior level. But swung forward in the second half against his old team, 'Goose' brought the house down with a brilliant fourth-quarter goal. After setting one up for 150th gamer Brent Staker moments earlier, Maguire kicked truly from deep in the right forward pocket, much to the amusement of the crowd and his teammates.

Goose’s goal
It might have taken him 52 matches, but Matt Maguire’s first goal in Lions colours was a memorable one.

Not only did it come against his former side St Kilda, with whom Maguire kicked 19 goals in 99 matches, but also came with a high degree of difficulty after he shrugged a couple of Saints opponents before slotting the goal from near the boundary.

You could tell from the celebration that ‘Goose’ was pretty pleased to have finally hit the scoreboard with his new Club.

Mid-year I thought he was a 50/50 prospect to retire at the end of the year, but he has finished the season quite strongly, and I'm now thinking he will probably be manning the forte in the backline next year. I loved the contest against Hawkins. One of the great aspects of the game is seeing two big bulls battling it out for physical and psychological superiority.

I think you are being generous to Hawkins Grim................more like a bull and a steer.

Polkinghorne re-signs

Maguire has also agreed to a new one year deal which will see him add to his career tally of 155 senior AFL games – 56 of which have been played with the Lions.

“Matt, on the other hand, is about to reach the twilight of his career, but his performances over the past few years have shown that he can still match it with some of the best forwards in the competition.

“He was particularly important last year when Daniel Merrett was moved forward, and is another experienced campaigner that our young defenders such as Justin Clarke and Jordon Bourke can learn from.”

2013 Review - by jackess

After 16 games in 2012 and an injury interrupted last few seasons It was fair to be sceptical about Maguire’s durability however it didn’t make his injury in round 1 any easier for fans. What was initially a short-term injury dragged on due to setbacks and he missed the next 3 months. Adding to the frustration was the mixed messages of the exact nature of the injury. The coaches were afforded the luxury of not having to rush him back due to the emergence of 19 year old Centre Half Back Justin Clarke who was elevated to the senior list prior to round 1. On return Goose quickly found form and consistently made it tough for opposition key forwards.

Season highlights included his 150th game. After 12 seasons in the AFL it is a worthy achievement for one of the hardest workers in the AFL. In round 15 against his old team the Saints, Goose was swung forward with almost immediate effect kicking a ripping goal from near the boundary line. This was followed by some of the best celebrating ever seen out on the GABBA. He also brought us a new Lions TV segment ‘A Brew with Goose’. Interviews with fellow Lions players over a cup of coffee quickly became a fan favourite segment on the Lions website.

Looking forward; 2014 is going to be an interesting year for Goose. A 1 year contract will see Goose move past 30 years of age and increased competition for a key back spot with Clarke and other young key back prospects will mean Goose has to be on top of his game to continue his AFL career any further. It will also be interesting to see what influence the new coach and former champion Lions Centre Half Back Justin Leppitsch will have on Goose.

Finally gets a game and we only concede 9 goals. Coincidence?

I would say yes. Bombers haven't kicked 10 or more goals for the last six weeks. I think his game was only so-so at best. I believe this will be his last year at the club.

It might be his last year, but from someone at the game I think Maguire played really well and just added enormous experience / calmness to the backline. He did quite a number of very good one percenters that perhaps didn't get picked up well on TV.

In fact, if he can stay fit I don't see why he shouldn't keep playing. It allows Merrett to play forward and I think it is becoming clearer that we need Merrett in our forward line to help Brown.
