I was worried it would take some time for him to get back in form, but he's been one of our better players from the start. His work in the forward line has improved significantly.

Matthew Leuenberger - Took on Cox and Nic Nat, and was the most influential big man on the field in what was a ripping contest. He says he wants to stay at Brisbane, and we'll wait and see on that one. If GWS don't get Buddy Franklin, then Leuenberger is the next obvious target. The contest between him and Naitanui was something to see, with both players seemingly jumping to be 15 feet into the air to contest the ruck hit outs.

And Voss said he was surprised by Matthew Leuenberger's progress. The ruckman is back to full form after playing just three games last year due to an Achilles complaint. "He's really stepped in like he hasn't missed a lot of footy at all," he said. "As a coach, the two players I would dearly have loved to have had the last couple of years is Leuenberger and Staker.
BESIEGED Brisbane coach Michael Voss not only relieved some pressure on himself by taking the four points in an upset win over Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, but he received the encouraging news that the Lions are poised to retain stars Daniel Rich and Matthew Leuenberger.
Like Voss, Rich and Leuenberger come out of contract at the end of the season, but the club is confident of securing the pair beyond this year. Brisbane list manager Rob Kerr said he was confident negotiations with the management of both Leuenberger and Rich - Melbourne-based Paul Connors - would lead to contract extensions for the pair over the next month.
Leuenberger, who was outstanding in the ruck against the Bombers, had been linked to Greater Western Sydney. Kerr said Brisbane was prepared to give Leuenberger a long-term contract, but it is understood his management wants to settle on a two-year deal. "Discussions over Matthew's future seem to be progressing well from our point of view," Kerr said. "We're hopeful of it being resolved in the next couple of weeks.
Leuenberger, 24, last month said he was aware of the speculation of interest from the Giants, but said he wanted to stay despite not having started contract talks with the club. "I've got no intentions of leaving. I love it here," he said. "I think good things are about to come. "I haven't hung around here for this long to leave as soon as it's starting to come good."
Against Essendon in his seventh game in succession since damaging his achilles in round three last year and missing the remainder of that season, Leuenberger had 43 hit-outs, one more than the combination of Dons big men Paddy Ryder and Tom Bellchambers.
It's a pity Leuey, no doubt on advice from Connors, does not want to commit beyond two years...but I'll take it nonetheless if it means Leuey re-commits.
They'll be backing him to be one of the best ruckmen in the comp in a couple of years, so don't really want to sign at unders. Can't really blame them at this point, with him still just coming back from injury.
While the likes of Franklin and Thomas hold the public's attention, Brisbane Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger can expect to be quite popular at the end of the season and Whateley said a big offer could prize him away from the Lions.
"I think he'll go," he said. "When the offers come I think they're going to be so big that I'm not sure they'll be any other option than to go."
I'm not exactly sure who they think we are spending our money on if not Leuey? Black and Brown may finish this year, or if not will be on reduced contracts. Other than that we've no true top dollar marquee players. Rich, Redden Rockliff, Merrett and Adcock would be in the next rung down and I'd be surprised if they were on enormous contracts.
Edit- Fatcat beat me to it on the main board.
Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger was taken to hospital for scans on an injured thumb.
ALREADY down their best defender, the Brisbane Lions face the prospect of losing two more of their main men ahead of Friday night's home match against Collingwood.
Ruckman Matthew Leuenberger was taken to hospital after Saturday night's 13-point loss against Carlton to get scans on a dislocated thumb while co-captain Jonathan Brown could face scrutiny from the match review panel.
Either would be a huge loss against the Magpies as the Lions will already be without suspended fullback Daniel Merrett.
Leuenberger went off in the final quarter against the Blues and was rushed straight to the rooms.
"He dashed off to hospital, so that's a wait and see," coach Michael Voss said after the match.
"I couldn't give you an accurate report. I think so (dislocated), but you couldn't quote me."
BRISBANE are in grave danger of losing two of their biggest guns for this Friday night's blockbuster with Collingwood at the Gabba, with co-captain Jonathan Brown and ruckman Matthew Leuenberger in serious doubt for the prime-time showdown.
Brown is certain to come under the scrutiny of the match review panel for an incident in the third quarter of Brisbane's loss to Carlton on Saturday night, while Leuenberger is battling a nasty dislocated thumb injury, which had to be treated at a hospital.
"It's more than likely that Leuey won't play this week but we just have to see how he pulls up before we know for sure," Lions football manager Dean Warren said.
Leuenberger suffered a dislocated thumb in the 13-point defeat at the hands of the Blues and had to be taken to hospital to have it put back in after efforts on the ground and on the interchange bench failed.
"It popped out for about two-and-a-bit hours," Leuenberger said at Brisbane's recovery session yesterday, where his hand was heavily bandaged. "They did a good job getting it back in and we got scans done, but there was no fracture. We'll have to wait and see what the doctors say. I'd love to play against Collingwood; there's no bigger game."
Warren said Leuenberger would be assessed by medical staff today.
Matthew Leuenberger looks to have escaped major damage to a badly dislocated thumb suffered in the final quarter of last Saturday night’s match against Carlton.
Leuenberger was taken to hospital during the final quarter of last Saturday night’s match against Carlton when it became apparent that his thumb would not go back into place. While x-rays cleared the ruckman of any fractures, the full extent of his injury probably won’t be known until later in the week.
“(His availability) will be dependent on how stable that is now, but there was no fracture which is a good result.” “We will see how it progresses as the week goes on.”
