Former Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus will be announced as Gold Coast's new assistant coach today.
Primus, who was sacked by Port with four games remaining in the season, is expected to become the expansion club's new midfield coach.
In a surprise development, the Suns have opted to bring in Primus, in part to work with their large contingent of ruckmen. They spoke to former Carlton coach Brett Ratten about the role, but had already been in discussions with Primus.

Good luck to him. Won't hold any grudges for him leading us further into mediocrity, he had a plan and he stuck with it, even though it was a shitty plan. Hope he has more success with a smaller role.

Matty will love the Gold Coast lifestyle - good luck to him and his young family. Would love to see him re-establish his football reputation. Should never have put his hand up for a senior gig in the first place in my opinion - just comes across as a good assistant coach. Playting the bad cop just didn't suit him...

Yep good luck to the big Mattress. The young GC rucks will get some decent tuition.

Plenty of opportunity 10 out of the 12 months to take the shirt off at training up on the Gold Coast.

Nothing Personal against Matty, but our midfield has sucked strategically since 2008, so it's not much of a coupe IMO. I hope her tears me a new one and proves me wrong except when up against our boys :)

I love it.

Ratten's supposed "withdrawal" from our process (in which the media would like us to believe that we had basically given him the job before he'd even applied) is looking more and more like the sham that it was.

Good luck to Big Matty P.

Just on this, I'm not sure he will be our new midfield Coach. There was some talk that we'll be going after someone different for that. I could be wrong though, and will await confirmation from the club itself to determine Primus' exact role.

From what I do understand though, Primus will be predominately working with the forwards/rucks to not only fast-track their ruck skills, but also their general big-man skills. Taking grabs in the forward 50, etc etc.

Not sure he'll have much to do with Ablett, Swallow, Bennell and such at all.

Good luck to Matthew. I was overseas for the second half of last season so I only saw highlights of the matches, but I can imagine he was under intense scrutiny and pressure from the media and the fans, which would have been difficult. The end of the GWS match was shattering.

Despite knowing little about coaching myself, Primus never really seemed that impressive when discussing tactics on coaches corner or in interviews or members info nights. I think he was, and probably still is a very good ruck coach.

Just announced to the members

MEMBER-FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
The Gold Coast SUNS are pleased to confirm that Matthew Primus has agreed to join the club as an assistant coach ahead of the 2013 season.
Primus, played 157 AFL games for the Fitzroy and Port Adelaide Football Club's as a ruckman and joins the GC SUNS coaching panel after spending two years as senior coach of the Port Adelaide football club.
In welcoming Matthew’s appointment, Gold Coast SUNS General Manager Football Operation’s , Marcus Ashcroft confirmed Primus would not only take up a midfield coaching role but also work closely in developing the SUNS tall key position players.
"We are thrilled to confirm that Matthew has accepted an assistant coaching role. He brings considerable experience and we believe he has a significant amount to offer our club."
As a player Mathew Primus excelled earning All Australian selection in 2001 and 2002, he was crowned Best and Fairest for the Port Adelaide Club in 2002, and was also named to represent Australia in the International Rules series at the close of the 2002 season.
"Matthew's ability to educate and develop our ruckmen and key position players, as well as working with our midfield group ensures our playing group will benefit from the best possible tuition as we continue to develop our list."

Good for Matty. I think he'll end up eventually making his way back in to a Head Coaching position. He just needs some wider experience.

Oh no, he'll take all our strategic knowledge with him!
