If you look at what happened with the Wallace/Rhode transition at the Dogs its a lot like what we saw with Williams/Primus here. Caretaker coach gets the gig and finds a way to make a bad team worse and is sacked after 2 years.

Maybe Primus has a future in footy ops management.

Very pleased for Matty and glad that he has another opportunity. I think a move to another club and a completely different environment/lifestyle could be great for him. He and his family will probably also enjoy not having the pressure and media scrutiny he has had for the last couple of years.

Wish them all the best.

Hang on. Let me get this straight.

Port sack Primus (or don't take the option of a 3rd year, whatever), Carlton sack Ratten with a year to run on his contract, Port are told by many in the media that hiring Ratten to replace Primus is a no-brainer and that we would be fools to not hire him, Ratten withdraws from the Port coaching race to pursue a role with Gold coast and in the process, leaves Port without any options for a senior coach (no one wants to coach Port), Gold Coast hire Primus instead of Ratten.

****ing massive LOL at Ratten and the dumb shit media. A special **** you as well to ****wit dumb campaigner Smith.:thumbsu:

Matty was a great ruckman, a great captain, and a dreadful coach. I'm glad to see him still employed and probably this is his level.
So did we dodge a bullet (Ratten) or was he never an option?!
Ratten certainly was an option but Gerard Whately was unequivocal (when speaking on the ABC's The Insiders) that his interview did not go well and that Ratten chose to withdraw knowing he had blown it. Whether we dodged a bullet is not so easy to answer, but is probably for another thread.

He only withdraws because he's saving himself for someone special.

Congats Matty. Hope things work out well for you up at the Gold Coast.

Are there any other coaching jobs that Ratten can withdraw from?

Maybe Carlton never really sacked him, he just withdrew with a year left on his contract.

Apparently the latest on Ratten is that he's now taking a year off to go and study at a US University. Oh Ratts.

At this rate he'll 'withdraw from the race' to get accepted at a US university and get shunted back to Monash or something :p

Good on him. Held himself with dignity and class throughout his time as coach here. I don't think he was quite smart enough to succeed as a senior coach, which saw us as a club make some pretty horrible decisions and put up some simply atrocious performances but I liked how he was straight an didn't bullshit about when addressing the fans via the media. Ultimately he wasn't the man we were looking for and I hope he can earn a reputation as a good assistant coach.

Also I would just like to add, not sure why Ratten should be getting so much hate. He came here enthusiastic for a job, gave it a shot, but the club preferred to look elsewhere. Direct your hate and mirth towards the media who tore into us and the idiots on here that lapped their lies up.
