Max Holmes will be the best player in the AFL in 5 years time

Old age means a lot of your players are about to go off the cliff.

Take out your oldies and I don’t think you’d even make finals.

People have been saying the same thing for like a decade 😂

They don’t need superstars they have a very well-structured game with players who all play their roles effectively. Scott is a fantastic coach who has demonstrated his ability to understand the game at the highest level and adjust the game plan and pieces on the fly better than anyone.

But that was us throwing you a bone after picking up 3x premiership hero Brad Ottens and kicking off the Geelong dynasty on that wonderful day in 2007 under the roof that has continued on until the present. You didn't need to give us Holmes too, we'd already taken enough.

Eh.... a Dynasty implies a high level of success for a sustained period.

Finishing 10th doesn't qualify. Neither does finishing 12th.

The term would imply something like making four Grand Finals on the trot, which Hawthorn did from 2012-2015. Prelims might count too.

That gives you a dynasty from 2007 to 2011, but it also overlaps with Hawthorn's since we're including Prelims. Either way that's 13 years ago.

Richmond's Dynasty didn't overlap with anyone's. It produced as many GF wins as Geelong and Hawthorn's, along with back to back flags. Their dynasty shone brighter than Geelong's on the back of that.

Also Richmond trading Ottens to the Cats was some kind of 3D chess in the context of this argument. It played a part in Hawthorn's win in 2008, with an honorable mention to North as well.

For our likely line up this weekend:

30+: 8 players
23-29 y.o: 9 players
18-22 y.o: 6 players

Looks like a good mix of veterans, prime aged players and up and comers to me.

2022 GF team for a comparison:

30+: 10 players
23-29 y.o: 12 players
18-22 y.o: 1 player

2024 Rebuilding: "On The Run" Edition

It does indeed look like a good mix of age groups presented like that.

But presented to give a more clear picture, it looks more like what is actually is, the oldest team in the finals series:

33+yo's: 5 minimum

31-32yo's: 2 minimum

22-30yo's: 13(within which approx 4 will fall under 25yo)

21yo's: 2

Within that....

34+yo's: 1 or 2.
18-19-20yo's: ZERO

That is the real picture. Players with realistic upside due to youth who are in this team currently probably make up 20-25% of the team max.

Oh well. Better forfeit the season then.

We’ve actually finished last.

You forget toomany, Geelong are allowed to take dynasty holidays without affecting their dynasty entitlements. If you are Geelong you are apparently not needing to make a Grand Final for 9 years without discontnuing your dynasty. :tearsofjoy:

Both Richmond's and Hawthorn's flash in a pan dynasties are footnotes in the Great Joel Selwood Dynasty of 2007-2022. While we acknowledge that they happened, no amount of keyboard thumping will allow them to step out of the shadow of Geelong.

I identify as the broken clock. I will get it right eventually. 🤣

That’s the beauty of Chris Scott and the Geelong list management team don’t you think? They’re able to inject exciting youth into the team and combine them with the more experienced players in a way that sees them being competitive most years, and they’ve shown that a high average age is no barrier to achieving ultimate success.

Also, average age is a somewhat meaningless marker, because the young guys aren’t old right? There’s different ways to achieve the same average, and obviously Geelong have done pretty well to achieve a balance that allows them to stay near the pointy end more than other teams have been able to for an extended period of time

What Scott has shown from the point of being able to claim it as his own team is that if you play a lot of old players on constant rotation you can consistently win a lot of home and away matches, though even that may be slightly questionable as not all clubs compete on level terms there.

What he hasn't shown is you can win a lot of premierships doing that. He has essentially won 1 flag in 10-12 years from the point you might describe the team as his. One ocurance of anything probably can't be taken as proof of concept.

“You lose a final you are just making up the numbers, you lose 10 finals you are a dynasty.”

- Cleansweep (inspired but the movie Cliffhanger)

The Geelong mentally is something that needs to be studied.

So beatifully put Cleany, wonderful turn of phrase summing up Geelong's highly spurious claims to primacy in a nutshell.

The word dynasty does not mean what you think it does.

And poor sad Ken. Losing all of those flags... including one as an assistant against the Hawks.

And now a fool who got so sanctimonious and melty about a mean social media post.... while conveniently forgotting that his club produced what's become an all time great foot in mouth moment in 2021:

What a surprise to come in and see multiple sniping posts that have zero to do with the title of the thread.

On the Cats board I posted after seeing Max play 1 game, he's a bit special, this young man. No pressure Max ;)

Personally I liked the look of Max during his draft year.

But I digress. You've got people supporting your club talking about make believe 20 year dynasties in this thread.

They actually double down when you point out what the word means.

Which seems the bigger surprise to you?

Show a bit of respect for the man who single-handedly dropkicked Hokball into orbit and caused a mass frenzy from the Hok-dominated media, dealing irreversible reputational damage to the Hok brand.

This morbidly obese man was the difference between going back to back and being nopeaters.

I appreciate your input. After careful consideration the following analysis was selected:

We do however appreciate your submission and encourage you to send a new one in 2025.

Neale and Henry are offering plenty of goals and encouragement as young marking forwards.

SDK has been the first picked 22under22 KPD for a while and showed good signs in the ruck.

Dempsey Rising Star.

Holmes 73 coaches votes and AA squad.

Mannagh's stats the past 9 weeks match Moore's AA season average.

Humphries top 5 first year players in the AFL.

Bruhn has done very well for a player who has had 35 odd games as an AFL midfielder.

The players in their prime such as Stengle, J.Henry, Kolo, Zuthrie, Miers, Bowes, Close have had very good seasons.

None of these players are about to retire.

Bit disrespectful to the 7-8 other guys who were too good for us that day.

Combine them together and they wouldn't come close to the mass monster that is Stewie Dew.

An unlikely bulky hero. The Incredible Bulk.

Fourteen years, and people are still doing this?

A Geelong supporting family member said his team was beaten that day 'by a guy who looked like he'd jumped the fence (Dew), and a bloody teenager' (Cyril).

Dew was a big part of more than one game defining moment, no doubt.
