Max came down to my kids footy club when he was 18 playing for Pies, his interactions with the kids and as an 18 yr old the way he handled himself was of a high standard
Since coming to the Hawks he just had no luck with injuries, sounds like a person of high character as he continues his journey with Hawks as an AFLW coach.
Best of luck, and it's a shame he never got a good run at it to show what he was capable of.

Had great hope that he was gonna become a solid ruckman for us. Seemed like a popular character around the club too. Unfortunate that it got cut so short. A courageous decision to retire. Thanks Maxy

Sad news - such a tough decision for a young guy to have to make. On the plus side he comes across as an intelligent, capable, very likeable (not to mention hilarious) guy so I'm sure he has more options than some. Love what he brings to the Hawks so it's great he's helping to coach our AFLW team. Best of luck, Max.

Sad news but kudos for making a tough call at such a young age.

From an old bird, to a young rooster - health matters. You will certainly feel it as the body starts to age so it’s important you care for it now

All the best, enjoy the coaching. Hopefully you can make a career out of it

From an outside view, the impact of the concussions that Max was succumbing to seemed to have become increasingly innocuous. Again from and outside view, I could not see any upside (not even for the money) in Max playing on. He has 60+ years of Life to enjoy without another concussion getting in the way.

It is great that he currently has a coaching role. He seems like a likeable character and I’d love to hear him in commentary.

Do AFL player have insurance against a career ending injury like this? If not, maybe the AFL should step up to pay the premium. That may focus their mind / check book / policy decisions further.

After the Jones and Aliir collision (where they were both concussed for all to see) and Aliir came back onto the field, an impartial medico should be making the call on concussion.

All that said, Max, I loved watching your work at both VFL and AFL levels. Onwards and into the new.
