McDermott - drop Kane

This is all getting quite ridiculous. Kane is in our best 22 comfortably.

In Dream Team, Kane is in our best 22 comfortably. He's probably an All-Australian. And because of it, and because of lazy and jaded media folks, he's All-Australian Over-Rated.

His standing at Alberton will be a judgment made by the selectors, but they also must consider form. It's not about picking your best 22, it's about picking a winning 22. He doesn't fit!

Kane's running ability is undoubted, but does he even run to the right spaces? His skills are poor. Heaps of uncontested possessions that go nowhere don't make Port a better team. I can distinctly remember the skinny on him when recruited that he was a beautiful kick. I remember him dobbing a long goal in an early pre-season GF, but we've seen no more of that. Port fans might also cite his urgency and toughness, but I believe these are memories of they way he once played, not what he's giving them now. He's playing the type of game that holds Port back. Now there's an apparent gameplan, you can stick a fork in him, or at least take him out to the woodshed for some re-education.

I do wonder if Kane's manic work rate and running ability ******s his skills at times. Sure you may get fitter and work harder for longer, but I wonder if Kane runs too much rather than running smarter. He always seems to be running past or running running running.

It's like Forrest Cornes.

You can take Chad, D Motlop, and Ebert with him too.

Drop him and watch one of the oppositions best midfielders have an easy day.

He wont get dropped, he gets a job each week and does it. From the outside it may not be appreciated, but I am sure the coach does.

Chad on the other hand, the game has past him by. He may not be old in years but his body certainly is. Had Trengove played against the Dogs you win.

Well the Port Adelaide website had him in our best for the weekend, and as much as that isn't a terrible lot to go on, I would at least take it to mean he wasn't in our worst players.

Kane will find himself a spot in this side until hes 33.

Anyone even thinking of writing him off should really find better things with their time.

and wow, how many tackles has pearce been laying lately! go danyle go :D

You've got to be careful with these articles on the club websites. They are written by journos and they come with a rider at the bottom:-

"The views in this article are those of the author and not necessarily those of the clubs or the AFL"

I agree with you about Pearce.

seriously astounded ....

i have now read drop Kane, Motlop, Ebert, Pearce, Chad ....

Go on drop them and see the attention our youngsters get...While I am impressed with our youngsters performances but drop the likes of the blokes i mentioned above and you will see our youngsters performances drop simply because of the added attention the other guys attract will now be put on them....We need a good blend of experience and youth we just can't drop our experience and replace it with youth that is not team balance.

The only one i can make a case for being dropped ....is Ebert.

Yeah but he's 8 years past the point where tagging alone was acceptable. He's under pressure and that's good for the club but sad for him (over here Old Yeller, come with me boy we're going for a walk).

I tend to think you are right but this is the distinction between the NAB Cup and the H&A. Chad and Tredders needed game time and if they are still considered automatic selections next year it had to be from that game. We publicly said we were trying to win, but it hardly needs to be added that we were doing that with an eye to R1.

Primus is saying that Kane will go back into the midfield and was played at half forward in order to give the young guys a run in the middle.....
I've re-read the article and Primus doesn't say that which I've highlighted in red, it's just implied because there is nowhere else for Kane to go.

Put up your dukes Don, Primus doesn't say that which I've highlighted in red. :)

He says "We know what Kane can do as a run-with player. He has been doing it against the best players in the business. He is still the main guy we have to shut down players."

.... He'll always get a gig in our starting 18 as a tagger.
The problem being (as the Primus article states) is that taggers are less effective than in the past, due to high rotations. You have to have a second arrow in your quiver.

Before I read today's article I was thinking that it was probably a pre-season experiment to see if he could play that role and to give some new players a go in the mid-field.
Kane will be in the Round 1 - 22 side (barring injury or suspension)
The player that needs to be watchful of his spot in the 18 in McDermott's side is Ebert.
