At games I only notice the countdown clock when the ball goes near it. But it's awful when I do. No need.

The 5 minutes to go clock in close GFs such as 2006 and 2009 were intense..Yep I prefer the suspense.
The golden age of TV coverage, ie when Ten did it, was great. They had the count up clock when there was 5 minutes to go. It was great.
..."However, the countdown clock appeared less than two minutes before the final siren in Carlton's win over Essendon on Sunday.
An AFL spokesperson confirmed on Monday the countdown clock would now be permitted to run up until the final minute of third and fourth quarters"
Enjoyment of the fans compromised so a sponsor can have a wanky marketing exercise? What else is new?
the thing that i never get is that if we're going to have a 'blind clock' then make it blind for everyone.
the way it is now, the people at home know how long is left, the fans at the game do, the coaches do, the only ones who don't are the players. and so we have to send runners out to tell the players that there's 30 seconds left just so they know. it's laughably primitive and another example of the afl trying to balance tradition with progression and ******* it all up.
Good point. It would surely be worth nearly as much in most games to just have the time counting up.I hate its guts. If they wanna keep it, make it count upwards not down. It loses a bit of feeling of surprise when the siren goes. I hate it in rugby where people count down til the match ends. Such a lull and meh moment when that happens. I love the feeling when everyone spontaneously cheers and the club songs start blasting when they hear the siren. One of the great joys about our game. Piss of AFL money grubbers.
A stupid way to end decades of tradition.
It flashes too much as well. They don't need milliseconds on it.
