Unfortunately with Ross Lyon, I think it will always exist. If it were up to me I'd give him a couple of games to see if he can at least get back to his 09 form but if not, I'd put Steven in there and never look back.
I'm not sure if you've been hiding under a rock for 3 months but Lyon's done everything bar takeout full-page newspaper ads in advertising the structure changes.

"We're going to reconstruct our front half ... where the game has gone with presses, you're kicking to a contest a lot more, there are less uncontested marks," Lyon said.

"Collingwood had a really good model, playing three-and-a-half, at times four talls.

"When (Sam) Gilbert went to the front half, he turned those grand finals around pretty quickly.

"We see Gamble playing in the front half as well, so you're looking at (Justin) Koschitzke and (Rhys) Stanley in and out of the ruck, with (Nick) Riewoldt, Gilbert and ... Gamble (in attack).

Add Gamble's comments and the jigsaw is complete:

"You've got your two talls in Riewoldt and Koschitzke and the small blokes in Milne and (Adam) Schneider and they're sort of missing that mid-size forward and I think I can definitely offer something."

Don't know why people are so quick to wash hands of a player before the season has even begun.

Give him a chance to benefit from the fact that he had no off season surgery this year, and a full preseason, both of which can make all the difference.
Fair cop, but the other side of the coin is "what has he ever done?", and at best he has had one year ('09) where he showed some promise. Even at that he was still a fringe player.

His presence in the team last year suggests to me that the Saints had nobody fit or hungry enough to be knocking on the door.

Not saying this is correct as opinions are only opinions.

But if you are wrong Inker, then at least you've got the Dr for company :)

We've had a number of guys still developing like Heyne and Smith, and Steven, Geary and Armitage weren't able to run the year out due to injuries. I'd hope for greater pressure from these types (along with Cripps, Polo and possibly Winmar if he can get his body right).

I just prefer to will our players to succeed, worst that can happen is that I'm disappointed, but worth it if he makes it.

I'm not one to knock players myself, and I don't believe I'm doing so here. I'd also will them to be injury free if it would make a difference.

At 24 McQualter is around the same age as James Gwilt, who is a prime example of a maturing player who grabbed his chance. In hindsight McQualter's window was '09-'10, he could turn around this season and make a new spot in the team for his own but realistically I think the odds are now far steeper for him and rising all the time.

Whether his lack of development is due to problems with either his physical or mental game, if he isn't making an impact I'd hope to see another player with the potential to do so push him out of the side. Players carry issues of one kind or another onto the park all the time, but the bottom line is always their performance.

Sure, it wasn't so much directed at you, than at the vibe of the thread in it's entirety.

What ever happens in season 2011

I'm pretty sure it will be a pivotal season in the making or breaking of quite a few players and possibly our current team.

Names of player such as Mini,Kosi,Dempster and Polo will all be under a lot of heat and I am hoping that all of them will be able to get through it, Because if theres one thing I know.....it is that the media will pounce on a lot of our players if they fail to deliver.

In saying that, theres room for improvement which means we can only get better :)

Mini has been an example of hard work and determination and his promotion to the leadership group says what the players think about him, but even recapturing his 09 form - is this enough? can he provide another dimension to his game?

The preseason will dictate alot here - if gets the jump on others he'll be hard to dislodge but if others can show a bit and do the job asked of mini well perhaps he'll need to up the anti. I think the new faces in the coaching team will be less sympathetic to him if he doesn't produce.

Good luck mini :thumbsu:

Mini's 09 form didn't keep him there. It indicated promise that he would get better. He didn't. Add to that our rejigging of the forward line to "be more attacking" (which means, actually KICK a score), and he will not play a part in 2011.

I think the more attacking forward line will actually help him keep his spot - it means that he may look at scoring himself again rather than just concentrating on preventing opposing backs from rebounding and hurting us the other way. And I really doubt that we will get anywhere with 'attack only' forwards.

Anyone who plays in the forward line should be a threat to kick a goal. I don't know how much the new interchange rules are going to affect the game but I agree with the person who said Mini's position probably doesn't exist anymore. AFL is becoming more about team defense than going out and following someone around.

Not everyone can fit in the 22, and at this point I'm hoping we find some guns among our younger players.
I despair that Kosi, Mini, and Dempster will ever rise above being a good ordinary player at best.
I hope that the players you named DONT get through it if it means keeping someone better out of the team.

I said at the end of last season that Mini had to spend the summer doing one of two things -

Follow Lenny around and build the tank to play as an inside midfielder.

Follow Milney around and learn how to play as a dangerous small forward.

He seems to be stuck in no man's land.

One thing we have to ask ourselves is

Does having 8 tackles and no goals beat

4 tackles and 2 goals ?

If Mcqualter can get the balance right, it would give him a much better chance

If Gamble and Gilbert are going to play forward...someone has to make room.

If Steven or Armo are going to break into the 22...someone has to make room.

Mini may play in our first 22 in 2011...but if so he is going to have to step up to do so.

Summed up pretty well there.

Eddy has already made way, hopefully the other is Kosi. If not then Mini is definitely under the pump to perform.
