So I went through Collingwood Forever each season (up to 2016 - matches not been updated for 8 years) and noted games won/lost by 6 points or under from 1897 onwards.

Premiership coaches win rate in games decided by 6 or less:

1. McRae - 85%
2. No official coach - 67%*
3. Kyne - 56%
4. McHale - 52%
5. Angus / Matthews - 50%
6. Malthouse - 47% **

* 1897-1904
** 2004-2005 had significant injuries and also tanked to get priority pick (Thomas and Pendlebury). Malthouse is 58% if not including these years.

Honourable mentions:

1. Ron Richards - 100%. My favourite statistic I came across - even if he only coached two games - Ron (and the Richards name) remains unquestionably the king of games decided by 6 or less! Not even McRae can catch the great man’s winning percentage! Haha

2. Hafey - 63%. Hell of a premiership coach - even if they were won at Richmond - GF, PF, GF, GF, GF is still phenomenal no matter what the result.

3. Cahill - 50%. Decent outcome when you consider the mess left after Hafey’s sacking and former President Allan McAlister confirming in his biography that he didn’t give Cahill the support he deserved during his tenure. As Peter Daicos would later say of the 1984 Preliminary Final “Coulda used Moorey”. I’m sure Cahill would have loved to have had Moore too. 10 x SANFL premiership coach, eclipsing Fos Williams. What could have been had Cahill had a more supportive administration.

Funny how history can repeat, cause we sure “Coulda used Moorey” in the 2018 GF too…

Lastly to Nick Riewoldt - lay off the Rat Pack. Stick to bagging your own players and publicly throwing Max King under the bus to cover up your mate Lyons poor coaching mate.

And to Max King - Collingwood’s just a phone call away, let’s make it happen. Im sure McRae and our Rat Packers will never hang you out to dry publicly like Nicky did for Ross.

Fact is Nicky boy - with the Rat Pack - Bucks went 4-0 - 100% in games decided by 6 or less (2012-2013). Without the Rat Pack, Bucks went 8-2-15 = 35% win rate in games decided by 6 or less (2014-2021).

If only Lyon had a better record in games decided in games won by 6 or less, and even 12 or less - Nicky - you’d be a two time premiership player if Ross was indeed the Boss. A 12 point choke followed by a draw. Keep on choking Nicky.

If Bucks does get the Devils job, maybe he should bring some Rat Packers in as line coaches. He was always better with them than without, even if he doesn’t seem to understand or appreciate them.

Anyways back on topic to Mr 85%. Thanks again to all involved (previous Board members from mid 2021 and President Korda included) for landing McRae and his staff. I still can’t believe it really.

If it all falls over tomorrow, so be it. We’ve all witnessed the greatest 2 and half year coaching performance in the AFL era, and most likely ever. Hope the Fly era lasts four decades like the McHale era!

Here’s a coaching stat:

Ever heard of Jack Bissett? I hadn’t.

He was a South Melbourne player / captain / coach during the 1930’s.

Played / Captained / Coached the Swans for 80 games. He won 63 of them and lost only 17.

He got his team to the Grand Final every single year he played / captained / coached them. Four years. Legend.

He won the first of the Grand Finals, and then lost the next three. (Two of those three he lost to Collingwood under McHale)

Why is he relevant to this thread? He is the only person who has coached more AFL games than McRae and has a better win/loss percentage than McRae.

Bissett:
Coached: 80 games
Winning Percentage: 78.75%

McRae:
Coached: 65 games
Winning Percentage: 72.31%

Every other coach who has coached more than 65 games has a lower winning percentage than 72.31%

Every other coach who has a higher winning percentage than 72.31 has coached less than 65 games (easy to have 100% winning percentage if you’ve only coached 1 game)

With regards to winning percentage? It wouldn’t seem to matter too much how many teams it’s against?

And has caused me to switch off the TV and go walking quite a lot in the final quarter - at MCG last Friday just had to bury my head in my hands (it worked)
