I thought he was decent today. I'm just wondering why we gave him a defensive role on Porplyzia instead of letting him do his thing in the center.

He's always looked more dangerous in the midfield IMO.

Ever think that without Slattery we were in desperate need down back? You put him into the midfield and you have no one to match up on Porplyzia, who is probably their most dangerous forward.

Yes, I did.

McVeigh's a superstar and all but we have to have better options down back.

I guess it shows how much we really miss Fletcher, NLM and Slattery at the moment.

Nah i liked McVeigh playing down back. Might keep Slattery out of the team now

Sure he was a liability sometimes last season. But I've been impressed with his form this year.

I liked McVeigh today, it's just that he would of been 10x more effective if we could of used him in the midfield.

I like McVeigh down back, allows us to fit better players in our 22. Was very good today, seemed to fade a bit late with lack of match fitness but sets up very well, with Fletcher and Winderlich in today's side we would have won today and would be very competitive against every side in the comp.

McVeigh's role? His ongoing role will be the same as it has been for the last season or so. Midfield.

He played one game in defence because he is not yet match fit and Slattery was out injured.

Pretty self explanitory i would have thought.

I wouldn't mind seeing him down back permanently. Less lockdown and more of a roaming hbf. Have Slattery shutting down the danger forward, McVeigh and Dempsey providing drive and creativity.

That will allow the likes of Prismall, Lonergan, Hocking to play through the middle with Watson, Stanton, Winderlich, Lovett + if we are looking at next year then possibly Zaharakis and Myers. Reimers could possibly warrant a midfield spot next year, Dyson could improve again to cement selection.

He's not fit enough to being play through the middle yet...when he's fitness improves they'll throw him in. He did a great job on Porplysia! Gave him a good old spanking

I liked him back in the backline yesterday, he's probably the most capable small shut down defender in the team. He will no doubt slot back into the midfield when fully fit but for now I think it's a good move having him take the best small forward.

Bingo.:thumbsu:

Yesterday was a pretty powerful message to all of the advocates of dropping Slattery.

McVeigh was played where he was played because Knighter got too excited and put in Prismall, Reimers and Skipworth all in the same team.

Thank god Dempsey was back this week.

Oh and after watching him back in action, (and I know this could be a bit controversial) anyone who doesn't see him as our next captain is seriously deluded.

McVeigh is one of our best kicks. Always delivers it beautifully.

I'd much rather him delivering it to our forwards.

And that's exactly what he'll be doing again soon.

End thread.

McVeighs role comes down to this:

How much better is he at being a small shut down defender then Slatts? (if at all)

How much better is he at playing in the midfield then the fringe midfielders?

Wherever the differential is greatest is where he should play.

I'm thinking that we're better off with him in the midfield and Slatts in defense then we are him in defense and Hocking/Lonergan playing in the midfield (for the time being anyway -- doesn't mean it will always be so and Bendigo time for either of these boys does not mean the end of their careers).

Though, it's good to know that we at least have someone who can cover for Slatts in defense in a pinch (possibly even doing a better job).

I think McVeigh did a great job on Porplyza, he is one of the Crows most dangerous, if not the most in their whole team. If McVeigh can shutdown the best medium size forward every week, as well as get the ball and set-up play, I am more than happy with him!

He can however also play in the center once he is a bit more match fit, however we just have to see how injuries go and the performance of the new guys into the center pans out.

People need to realise that he was a defender in his early days, was used up forward when he was drafted as we already had small defenders doing the job, so we tried him up forward, where he slowly moved himself up onto the half forward line, until about two-three years ago he was never a full time midfielder any ways. It was only until we had no bigged bodied players in their that Sheedy (I think) gave him more of a role, and Knights then saw the potential last year, was a shame that he has been a bit more injury prone running through the midfield otherwise we could have a genuine out and out star on out hands, I know he isnt like the 25-26 year olds like G.Ablett and C.Judd, but he stll has enough time on his hands in his prime to warrant a "star" status. maybe not the the extent that the forementioned are, but enough to be worried about at opposition team meetings each week.

Any ways, I told Ben The Gooner during the week that is where Mcveigh would play, he was the only one smart enough, defensively minded enough to go with Porplyzia. But everyone was so adament he (mcveigh) had to play in the midfield. Might make some people open their eyes a little bit.

And for people to say that Knights got excited at the prospect of Reimers, Prismal and Skipworth in the same team, pfft, rubbish, Prismal was good, Skipworth was good, and you cannot ask much more of a small forward interchange player that Riemers was on Sunday. It is the other players who are letting us down, the ones who are having goals consistantly kicked on them, players who are regularly letting their opposition get away from them, these are the ones who are letting the team down.

I'm guessing two reasons,
1/ As many have said he needs to lift his fitness before he moves into the midfield.
2/ A bit of leadership in defence with no Fletch and so many very young players down there - I think the other five that started down there were Pears, Hooker, Dempsey, Hocking (or Houli) and McPhee. 4 with less than 20 games experience and McPhee who as much as I love his intensity is hardly leadership material.

Firstly, I made those comments under the impression that Slats would play.

You would have noticed that McVeigh didn't play back against Geelong despite Steve Johnson having a fairly big match. He only played back because Slats was injured.

But you're right, you are the oracle.

Is that right? I'm pretty certain that i said McVeigh would play in defence last week.

I was also calling for him to play in defence against Geelong but Knights opted to play him in the forward line.

Once he gets his match fitness back to where it needs to be he should and will be moved straight back into the midfield.

This is exactly who i wanted Spike to play on in the Geelong game.

McVeigh is our best small defender and best midfielder, but we have more decent midfielders than small defenders, so his best place is down back. This is espcially the case at the moment when we have so many inexperienced players back there.
