Medhurst & Callan

It's not if you look at the theory behind it.

Medhurst is a 178cm full forward, a #1 target in the forward line.

Check out his record.

He kicked 50 and 40 in consecutive seasons in 03 and 04.

Pavlich was then moved forward in 05 and Medhurst's output dropped to 27 goals as he was no longer the major target in the forward line.

This year Fremantle unearthed Ryan Murphy to play at FF and Medhurst kicked a grand total of 12 goals in 12 games before getting dropped just as Fremantle went on their winning streak.

178cm full forwards go missing when the heat is on, as Freo have done the last few years.

Freo put a forward structure in place with genuine key forwards that can take contested grabs and don't rely on space to be effective and *shock horror* they started winning crunch games and made a preliminary final.

Steve Johnson kicked 30 for the season as a complimentary forward. We would be crazy to trade him for Medhurst.

They are completely different players and the only common trait between them is their laziness.

Wow, excellent thoughts, well done.:thumbsu:

I would be very upset if we traded our second round pick (as has been rumoured) for Medhurst. Bomber stated that this draft was to be used to pick up "fast skilled midfielders". To be dropping a second round pick for an inconsistent small forward to me goes against some of the results of the recent review which we were told was going to be used as our blueprint for the future.

I could excuse this pick being used to pick up Bradshaw as he would be a conduit until both N.Ablett and Hawkins both matured into regular senior players. He also has the versatility to be able to be moved down back if required.

If the Bradshaw deal falls through then we should hold that second round pick, particularly in this draft which is so highly regarded. I sometimes wonder whether rational decision-making gets thrown out the door in the excitement of trade week. Players get rated far higher than they are really worth at any other time of the year.

Medhurst for Kingsley and a packet of frozen peas?

Whoa whoa whoa! hang on there a minute, are you talking about the good birdseye brand peas or the dodgy safeway brand generic peas? We don't wanna get ripped off here!:) Medhurst is a pretty boy ponce who spent more time scruffing up his rats tale so it looked rugged than worrying where the ball was when we played them. Has a terrible kicking action, no routine when he comes to kick (ie - he tries to kick them from 50 off two steps) and really stabs at the ball. Kicking style reminds me of McCarthey at his worst. Medhurst is a chump and is the last person we wanna pick up.

As far as Medhurst and forward line structures go; bingo.

Callan will be an absolute bargin trade, he will be a 100 game player, and i don't think we'll get a pick inside the top 50 for him.

agreed
watching his last few games in the vfl i would almost go as far to say
out of any player with his body type i would back him in to go the hardest at the footy. he is right he has unfairly been given no opportunities but he is going to always give his 110%
its not worth the lottery pick in the draft for him

I agree, he's been stiff not to get a game. I don't see many VFL games (in fact, up until a couple of weeks ago I hadn't seen any), but after seeing the last 2 VFL games and watching him live in the VFL GF, he's a pretty handy small defender. He doesn't give his opponent any space when the opposition's got the ball, but runs to create an option when we've got the ball, that and the fact that he never shirks a contest. His skills seem pretty good, my only query would be on his pace, but I reckon he'd keep up with most small forwards and would be smart enough to keep himself in the contest.

As for Medhurst, I say no, unless we get him for a fourth rounder. Medhurst just isn't good enough when the ball hits the ground to be a small forward. He's a very, very good mark for his size, but he needs more to his game. The reason why Farmer got the gig over Medders is this simple fact, he's not as good a mark as Medhurst, but he's 50 times better when the pill hits the deck. I'd rather see Stokes, Gamble or Varcoe prowling around the forward line, ideally Stokes, the kid looks the goods, played an outstanding VFL GF.

And the mention on McDougall caught my eye as well. I don't reckon he'll make it as a forward (although with the size he is now, he just might), but as a CHB he could be good. He's tall (about 197cm) mobile (always did well at athletics and has played as a tall midfielder at school), but lacks the aggression required to be a good forward. I wouldn't say that he's soft, but he's just not going to crash packs or hit the ball hard. As a defender chasing someone around, all he needs to do is keep up and then use his long arms to spoil. I know the Doggies are pretty sold on him, but I'd like to see the Cats have a crack at him.

agree
surely we could upgrade the wce pick a couple of places more than the dogs?
